It begins with a social half hour with coffee (or tea) and cake, then continues into an hour’s uninterrupted silence which those attending use as an opportunity to spend time on a hobby or other activity that gets pushed aside in our busy lifestyles. People read, knit, paint, do tapestry, solve crosswords or jigsaws, write letters - anything that can be enjoyed in silence. The evening ends with a short (15 minutes) service of Compline (Night Prayer). Tuesday evenings are open to all, whether you regularly attend church or not. Charity bins help keep streets clean and raise money for good causes Our new ini a ve, supported by The Wrigley Company, has seen a massive 30% reduc on in the amount of rubbish on our streets. #BinItForGood encourages people to do the right thing and put their rubbish in the bin while at the same me making money for local chari es. The more rubbish that goes in the bin and the less li er that is thrown on the ground, the more money is given to good causes. A pilot carried out successfully in fi ve loca ons across England saw an average reduc on of 30% but, in Prudhoe town centre in Northumberland, the reduc on in li er was 52%. A survey as part of the pilot revealed that 71% of people said Bin it for Good made them want to put their li er in the bin and 50% said that there was less li er on the ground as a result of the ini a ve. Now, the pilot is being rolled out to another four places in the hopes that it can have the same, drama c eff ect on li er levels there. For three months from this week, bins in No ngham, Haringey, Su on and Ke ering will be given a ‘charity bin’ faceli and each month chari es will be given dona ons of up to £500, depending on how much more rubbish than usual is put in the bin.
