Finished size is 8.25 in x 7.5 in on 18 count.

Fibers are from Valdani - they have 6 ply silk and 3 ply , sold in small balls. Peacock Alley Needlepoint in Ada, Michigan, will have the threads or check your local needlepoint store.

This project will unfold over the next 12 months. The shell design is inspired by a traditional Sashiko . The shells will be filled with designs inspired by , open work and lacey backgrounds. A sampler to try different patterns in tiny bits.

Threads needed: Shell 17 JP9 3 ply cotton O39 6 ply silk Shell 18 M42 3 ply cotton V16 6 ply silk Shell 19 O550 3 ply cotton

Step 1

Start with blue stitches using O39 6 ply silk - with 5 ply stitch these triangles. See how they are offset every

other row.

Start at the top and

stitch the whole first triangle. Drop to second row and stitch triangle - offset one hole. Repeat on down the straight edge to the

bottom to establish the

pattern.

Step 2

Light aqua blue stitches are next with JP9 3 strand cotton - use all 3 ply just as it comes off the ball.

* Start at the bottom point and stitch that straight stitch from the bottom to the top on the straight border edge. Then begin at the top to fill in with the triangles that first stack top to bottom.

Shell #18

Step 1

Purple stitches first with V16 6 ply silk - use 5 ply

Start with the purple stitches to look like this. Top down - left to right, second

row is right to left, etc.

Stitches are on the true diagonal over 3.

Step 2

Red stitches are 3 strand cotton M42. Red stitches are not on the true diagonal.

Watch the angle.

Start at top, work left to right, second row is right to left, on down.

Shell #19 using 3 strand cotton O550 - step 1,2,3,4

Step 2 Step 1 Lay the same Start at top. .

Work left to Start at top left right, second to right, second row right to row right to left... left...

repeat on down repeat on down

Step 4 Step 3 Use same Use same thread and thread and tie stitch the dark down that laid blue stitches . thread. Top on down. Start at top, left to right, second Left to right, row is right to second row is left right to left on down. repeat on down
