Common jazz chord symbols Here I use the more explicit abbreviation 'maj7' for major seventh. Other common abbreviations include: C² C²7 CMA7 and CM7. Here I use the abbreviation 'm7' for minor seventh. Other common abbreviations include: C- C-7 Cmi7 and Cmin7. The variations given for Major 6th, Major 7th, Dominant 7th, basic altered dominant and minor 7th chords in the first five systems are essentially interchangeable, in other words, the 'color tones' shown added to these chords (9 and 13 on major and dominant seventh chords, 9, 13 and 11 on minor seventh chords) are commonly added even when not included in a chord symbol. For example, a chord notated Cmaj7 is often played with an added 6th and/or 9th, etc. Note that the 11th is not one of the basic color tones added to major and dominant 7th chords. Only #11 is added to these chords, which implies a different scale (lydian rather than major on maj7, lydian dominant rather than the 'seventh scale' on dominant 7th chords.) Although color tones above the seventh are sometimes added to the m7b5 chord, this chord is shown here without color tones, as it is often played without them, especially when a more basic approach is being taken to the minor ii-V-I. Note that the abbreviations Cmaj9, Cmaj13, C9, C13, Cm9 and Cm13 imply that the seventh is included. Jazz Harmony Primer General stuff There are two main types of harmony found in modern Western music: 1) Modal 2) Functional Modal harmony generally involves a static drone, riff or chord over which you have melodies with notes chosen from various scales. It’s common in rock, modern jazz and electronic dance music. It predates functional harmony, too. In some types of modal music – for example in jazz - you get different modes/chord scale sounds over the course of a piece. Chords and melodies can be drawn from these scales. This kind of harmony is suited to the guitar due to its open strings and retuning possibilities. We see the guitar take over as a songwriting instrument at about the same time as the modes become popular in pop music. Loop based music also encourages this kind of harmony. It has become very common in all areas of music since the late 20th century under the influence of rock and folk music, composers like Steve Reich, modal jazz pioneered by Miles Davis and John Coltrane, and influences from India, the Middle East and pre-classical Western music. Functional harmony is a development of the kind of harmony used by Bach and Mozart. Jazz up to around 1960 was primarily based on this kind of harmony, and jazz improvisation was concerned with the improvising over songs written by the classically trained songwriters and film composers of the era. These composers all played the piano, so in a sense functional harmony is piano harmony. It’s not really guitar shaped. When I talk about functional harmony I’ll mostly be talking about ways we can improvise and compose on pre-existing jazz standards rather than making up new progressions. -

Getting Started with the Tonalities music analysis software Anthony Pople, University of Nottingham, March 2002 (v6.25/03) The support of the AHRB for the Tonalities project is gratefully acknowledged. Overview This software is part of a larger project that lays stress on the multiplicity of tonal systems in music, focusing particularly on Western music of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It allows you to analyse passages of music in terms of differing tonal systems that may be configured to a high level of detail from a range of supplied options. To use the software effectively, it is important to have an understand of the basic concepts of the underlying theory, above all: · segmentation · prolonging gamut · connective gamut · the distinction between spelled and unspelled matches of chords and gamuts · the distinction between functional and inclusive chords and gamuts These concepts are explained briefly in what follows, but it is not the purpose of the guide to present the music theory component of the Tonalities project in full. The remainder of this user guide also assumes you are familiar to some extent with Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Excel. The software has been developed in Excel 97 and will not run under earlier versions (though it seems to run under later versions up to and including Excel 2002 – the version supplied in Office XP). I have run it under Windows 98 and Windows Me, though not Windows NT, 2000 or XP. Installing the software If the software has been pre-installed, please skip this section. The Tonalities software is supplied as an Add-In to Microsoft® Excel, running under Microsoft® Windows®. -

The voicing of chords and voice leading between chords is variable. Brain Teaser What triad is shared by V7 and viiØ7? How do these two seventh chords differ in terms of their scale-degree contents? Answer: V7 and viiØ7 share the leading-tone triad (viiO). The two chords differ by 5ˆ (the root of V7) and 6ˆ (the seventh of viiØ7). 5ˆ and 6ˆ are a whole step apart (a half step in minor, where 6ˆ is the seventh of viiO7). Thinking Critically An incomplete triad or seventh chord is missing its fifth. Compared with other chord members (root, third, and seventh), why is it possible to omit the fifth (i.e., why is this particular chord member nonessential)? Discussion The root of a chord is necessary to identify the chord and its function, the third determines the quality of the chord (major or minor), and the seventh must be present for a chord to be an actual seventh chord (rather than a triad). -

MUSIC THEORY UNIT 5: TRIADS Intervallic structure of Triads Another name of an interval is a “dyad” (two pitches). If two successive intervals (3 notes) happen simultaneously, we now have what is referred to as a chord or a “triad” (three pitches) Major and Minor Triads A Major triad consists of a M3 and a P5 interval from the root. A minor triad consists of a m3 and a P5 interval from the root. Diminished and Augmented Triads A diminished triad consists of a m3 and a dim 5th interval from the root. An augmented triad consists of a M3 and an Aug 5th interval from the root. The augmented triad has a major third interval and an augmented fifth interval from the root. An augmented triad differs from a major triad because the “5th” interval is a half-step higher than it is in the major triad. The diminished triad differs from minor triad because the “5th” interval is a half-step lower than it is in the minor triad. Recommended process: 1. Memorize your Perfect 5th intervals from most root pitches (ex. A-E, B-F#, C-G, D-A, etc…) 2. Know that a Major 3rd interval is two whole steps from a root pitch If you can identify a M3 and P5 from a root, you will be able to correctly spell your Major Triads. 3. If you need to know a minor triad, adjust the 3rd of the major triad down a half step to make it minor. 4. If you need to know an Augmented triad, adjust the 5th of the chord up a half step from the MAJOR triad. -

You will also find that you sometimes need to make big jumps across the neck to keep bass lines going. Keeping a solid bass line is more important than smooth voice leading. For example it’s more important to keep a bass line constantly going using simple chords rather than trying to find the hippest chords you know Day 24: Comping with Bass Lines After learning how to use a bass line with chords in the bossa nova, today’s lesson is about how to comp with bass lines in a more traditional jazz setting. Background on Comping with Bass Lines An essential comping technique that every guitarist learns at some point is to comp with bass lines. The two most important ingredients to this comping style are the feel and the bass line. As Joe Pass says “A good bass line must be able to stand by itself”, meaning that you add the chords where you can. Like many other subjects in this book, bass lines could fill up an entire book of their own, but this section will teach you the fundamental principles such as how to construct a bass line and apply it over the ii-V-I progression. What Chords Should I Use? As with bossa nova comping, it’s best to use simple voicings that are easy to grab to keep the bass line flowing as smoothly as possible. The chord diagram below shows the chords that are going to be used, notice that these are all simple inversions with no extensions, but they give the ear enough information to recognize the chord type and have roots on the bottom two strings. -

Whereas melody implies the Harmony linear or horizontal aspect of music, harmony refers to the vertical dimension of music.
