Colorado Rockies: Is Jon Gray a Fantasy Baseball Sleeper? Author : Jeff Krisko There is only one Colorado Rockies starting pitcher worth drafting this fantasy baseball draft season: de facto ace Jon Gray. Gray did not post the best ERA and WHIP last year (4.61 and 1.26), but his strikeout and walk rates were great. His strikeout rate and walk rate already got him a slot in my breakout pitchers column. I wasn’t too high on him then, mostly due to the Coors Field issue. [Jeff] What, then, comes of Jon Gray in 2017? Currently, Gray is going 191 overall by FantasyPros.com ADP (the end of the 15th round). He presents a mid-round pick in a twelve-team league as the 75th starting pitcher off the board. At this price, Gray is a great investment because he’s a small investment. After a rocky first 8.2 innings to start 2016 (pun intended), Gray settled into a groove. He posted 101 innings of 3.30 ERA from May through July. Seemingly as soon as the calendar turned over to August, however, Gray started to fall apart, offering up a 6.21 ERA in June and a 5.52 ERA in September & October. The easy 1 / 2 explanation for this cratering is fatigue. It was his first full season in the majors, and his first time exceeding 155 innings in his career. It could also be that Gray was exceedingly prone to blowups last season; he had seven starts of 5+ earned runs. However, he paired that with sixteen starts of two or fewer earned runs. I believe in the peripherals (exceedingly high strikeout rate and low walk rate), but I also believe in park factors. Coors chews pitchers up and spits them out. Ironically, he did worse away from home than at home last season, but those peripherals are just too tasty to ignore. [Kenny2] Gray's 3.60 FIP (a full run lower than his ERA) indicates that his ERA, and not his peripherals, was the outlier. At his ADP, betting on Jon Gray in fantasy baseball is a bet that he can overcome Coors Field. There are years of data that shows that Coors Field cannot be defeated, but I feel good about Gray slaying the demon. His ERA was due to a handful of fatigued starts that had an exceptionally terrible outcome. More often than not last season, Gray returned a positive result when you started him. At more than a strikeout per inning and minimal walks, Gray is worth a stash to see if he can perform up to his 2016 peripherals. 2 / 2 Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org).

Also, Arenado and center fielder Charlie Blackmon are finalists for National League Outstanding Player, and closer Greg Holland is an NL Comeback Player finalist, the MLB Players Association announced. The awards will be announced exclusively on MLB Network on Nov. 8 at 6 p.m. MT. Arenado is joined by the Astros' Jose Altuve and the Marlins' Giancarlo Stanton as the finalists for the overall Player of the Year Award -- the highest on-field honor for the season. Arenado drove in 130 runs -- to become the first third baseman in MLB history with at least that many RBIs in a third straight year, batted .309 (his first .300 season), knocked 37 home runs and achieved an NL-leading 37 doubles. Blackmon won his first NL batting title at .331, and led the league in hits (213), triples (14) and total bases (387). Plus, his 103 RBIs and 383 total bases from the leadoff position were MLB records. He had 104 RBIs total. Blackmon also hit 37 home runs. D., BCBA-D, College of Education ABSTRACT This study applied the generalized matching equation (GME) to pitch selection in MLB during the 2016 regular season. The GME was used to evaluate the pitch selection of 21 groups of pitchers as well as 144 individual pitchers. The GME described pitch selection well for four of the 21 pitching groups and 32 of the 144 individual pitchers. Of the remaining groups and individual pitchers, behavior may be explained by rule following behavior or be impacted by distant reinforcers such as salary. All 21 groups demonstrated a bias for fastballs as well as 119 of the 144 individual pitchers. The results extend the use of the GME to natural contexts and suggest an alternative view to evaluating pitchers. As the announcement came shortly after 11:30 a.m. MT, the scoreboard showed a temperature of 37 degrees. Intermittent light snow had fallen. Scheduled game time was 1:10 p.m. No makeup announcement was immediately made. The postponement comes at a good time for the Rockies. Manager Walt Weiss made his lineup card with a planned day off for rookie shortstop Trevor Story -- his second in three days. He also wanted to give right fielder Carlos Gonzalez, who has started every game, off Friday at Arizona. The Rockies have lost five straight, including six of the last seven. They went 1-5 on the just-completed homestand, during which their starters compiled a 9.72 ERA. They overcame a six-run deficit Sunday against the Dodgers and came back from seven runs down Wednesday against the Pirates, yet lost both contests. Additionally, the bullpen was fatigued because starters Jorge De La Rosa and Jon Gray went three innings and 3 2/3 frames, respectively, on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Rockies announced that they were pushing their rotation back for the three-game series at Arizona. Tyler Chatwood, Thursday's scheduled starter, will pitch Friday, followed by lefty Chris Rusin and righty Chad Bettis. The club has not named its starter for Monday's opener at San Diego, but it could potentially be righty Eddie Butler, who was called up from Triple-A Albuquerque on Wednesday and was used for 41 pitches in relief.
