Our research was carried out in the pe- riod 2010-2015. We have gathered the preserved parts of roads with bridges, together with the results of archaeological studies and data about the settlements alongside these roads. The Roman city of Nicopolis ad Nestum inherited road connections from 1 One of the first descriptions of the pre-Roman times, which were further developed. The Bulgarian part of Hadzhidimovo Gorge (the Mesta River basin, south-western Bulgaria) was studied in March-October 2018 in order to collect data about the local herpetofauna. A preliminary checklist of the amphibians and reptiles is presented, based on bibliographic records and the field research. The list includes 25 species. The representatives of the class Amphibia are 8 (the half of them are new for the area), and the reptiles are 17 (5 of them are reported for the first time). The field records for all new species (except Pelophylax ridibundus complex) as well as for the most of the known species interesting from zoogeographic point of view are specified. It is of particular interest the discovery of Triturus ivanbureschi, Podarcis muralis, Ablepharus kitaibelii, and Platyceps najadum in the gorge. (Altered by State Gazette # 38 from 2016, valid from 20.05.2016) CLLD STRATEGY OF GOTSE DELCHEV – GARMEN – HADZHIDIMOVO LOCAL INITIATIVE GROUP Introduction During the 2007-2013 period, for the first time ever, Bulgaria managed to effectively utilize the LEADER method as a tool for decentralized management and integrated local development in rural areas. For the purpose, 35 local initiative groups, comprising 57 rural municipalities and 6 local fishing groups spanning across the territories of 17 municipalities have been established in the years prior 2013 and are still functioning. During the 2009-2011 period, we have performed activities with the purpose of preparing potential local initiative groups for implementing strategies for local development. Additionally, these activities are responsible for teaching skills and ensuring activities can happen on a communal level across the territories of potential local initiative groups under the Rural Area Development Programme. The LEADER method in Europe dates back to 1991. Since then it has been developed as a separate initiative in the EU member-states until 2007 (“Leader I” during the 1991-1993 period, “Leader II” during the 1994-1999 period and “Leader+” during the 2000-2006 period) and as for the 2007-2013 Programme Period, the initiative has been included as a part of the Programmes for Rural Area Development (PRAD) of member-states.

Ankara Üniversitesi Çevrebilimleri Dergisi 5(1), 49-60 (2013) Environmental Protection and Political Borders: NATURA 2000 in the Rhodope Mountains Çevre Koruma ve Siyasi Sınırlar: Rodop Dağları'nda Natura 2000 Assen ASSENOV Landscapes and Environmental Protection Department University of Sofia “St. Kliment Ohridsky”, Faculty of Geology and Geography Abstract: In the summer and autumn of 2011 two surveys of habitat types were conducted in "Dolna Mesta" BG 0000220 protected site. During the field studies, in addition to the description of habitat types, measurements of specific characteristics of landscape were carried out. They were followed by cameral work using Global Mapper Program when the final values were derived and summarized as morphometric characteristics of Perica Mountain. From the field studies along the boundary line immediate information about the nature of the relief in the upper part of the southern macro-slope and the conservation value of habitat diversity in this part of the mountain was obtained. Furthermore, a previous visit of the Greek part of the Bozdag Mountains (2009) provided immediate information on relief and habitat diversity at the foot of the Perica Mountain. The deficit of field studies in Greece was compensated by using the Google Earth Program. The current study aims to determine the conservation significance of the Bulgarian part of Perica Mountain, part of "Dolna Mesta" protected site and compare it with the southern macro-slope of the same mountain, located in Greece. Comparison of conservation value between the two macro-slopes of the mountain is particularly important because the ridge follows the border between two countries of the European Union.

Biodiversity of Western Rhodopes (Bulgaria and Greece) I. Pensoft & Nat. Mus. Natur. Hist., Sofia, 863-912. Abstract: The Western Rhodopes (8732 km2) encompass vast forested areas and transborder mountain ridges up to 2191 m a.s.l between Bulgaria and Greece. The paper outlines all published herpetofaunal data for Bulgarian and Greek Western Rhodopes and supplements many original records. The herpetological diversity is remarkably high: 12 species of amphibians (4 tailed and 8 anurans) and 27 species of reptiles (2 tortoises, 2 terrapins, 12 lizards and 11 snakes). Altogether 34 species were found in the Bulgarian part, 32 were proved for the Greek part of the mountain. Two species of snakes, Typhlops vermicularis and Zamenis situla are considered extinct for the studied region. The most common and abundant amphibians are Salamandra salamandra, Rana temporaria, Rana graeca and Bufo bufo. The most widespread reptiles are Podarcis muralis, Lacerta viridis, Anguis fragilis, Natrix natrix and Coronella austriaca. Brief zoogeographical analysis and distribution maps for the majority of the species are provided. Herpetological conservation issues and threats are also discussed. Key words: Amphibia, Reptilia, Western Rhodopes, Bulgaria, Greece, distribution, conservation Introduction The Western Rhodopes form a vast expanse of mountain ridges covered with dense forests.

  • Trends in the Demographic Development of the Dabrash Karst Area of the Western Rhodopes

The karst in the study area has a limited spatial distribution, but despite this fact, it is extremely diverse. The population with its number, de- mographic and social characteristics, its economic activity, indirectly influences the evolution of the karst. The current ongoing processes of depopulation, aging and migratory mobility of the population have been analyzed in the paper. The demographic and social characteris- tics of the population have been studied through calculation of indicators which describe the demographic structures, thus allowing the disclosure of a number of features that determine both the current state and the future development trends of the local population. The negative demographic processes occurring in the Dabrash karst area, are less manifested in compar- ison to Blagoevgrad district and the country as a whole. The most significant demographic problems in the area are the declining birth rates, the reduction of the number of young and working-age population, the emigration and the low level of education of the local population. These processes will have an increasing negative impact in the future, both on the demograph- ic situation and on the overall sustainable development of the area.
