Braudel, La géographie face aux sciences humaines 2 Avant-propos Compte tenu du temps (à savoir H moins quelques secondes), que la fin de ma thèse m’a imparti pour rédiger cet exercice de style, que malgré cela je ne considère pas du tout comme imposé, j’espère n’oublier personne dans la liste des personnes dont je me sens la débitrice. Au terme de ce périple, qu’a représenté pour moi cette thèse, au sens propre (même si Londres est moins loin que la Chine) mais surtout au sens intellectuel et psychologique, je souhaite honorer une reconnaissance de dette (qui je l’espère ne se clôture pas pour autant aujourd’hui) vis-à-vis d’un certain nombre de personnes, qui d’une manière ou d’une autre ont influé sur ce travail – qu’ils le sachent ou non. 3 Tout d’abord, mes remerciements vont à Jacques Bonnet, mon directeur de thèse, pour l’ouverture d’esprit dont il a fait preuve dès le début, vis-à-vis de mon sujet de recherche, alors que la « mode » des espaces publics ne battait pas encore son plein. Je tiens aussi à remercier Cynthia Ghorra-Gobin de m’avoir intégré dans son groupe de recherche sur les Villes Anglo-Américaines, et de m’avoir permis de participer à différents débats très instructifs pour le propos de ma thèse. Je voudrais aussi mentionner tout ce que ma vision du monde doit à la pensée d’A. Berque. Son séminaire à l’EHESS, que j’ai suivi en 1997-1998, m’a ouvert des horizons onto-géographiques d’une profondeur insoupçonnée. Enfin, je voudrais aussi remercier mes collègues de l’Université de Paris XII qui ont connu la mise en place du LMD pendant que j’étais dans les turbulences de la fin de ma thèse, et que j’avais mis entre parenthèses tout l’intérêt que je porte à mon poste de PRAG. Cette thèse doit aussi beaucoup à la double formation qui a été la mienne au cours de mon cursus. Aussi, je voudrais remercier les enseignants de l’ENS, pour leur approche de la géographie mais aussi M Micheau, directeur du DESS d’Urbanisme de Sciences Po, qui m’a permis, après la rigueur de l’agrégation, de m’immerger dans un monde d’acteurs nouveaux aux méthodes de travail stimulantes. Plus lointain, mais tout aussi fondamental, je tiens à exprimer ma dette vis-à-vis de mes professeurs de khâgne – toutes disciplines confondues – qui ont illuminé ma vie pendant 2 ans et plus que contribué à ma formation intellectuelle. Après ce saut dans un passé, dont la longueur s’amplifie de manière aussi alarmante qu’implacable, je voudrais remercier tous ceux qui ont contribué à ce que, dans cette dernière année, cette thèse devienne une réalité, écrite et visuelle. Mes premiers remerciements vont, non pas à mon producteur, mais à Bruno Rossi, du service audiovisuel de Paris XII, rencontré au hasard d’un emprunt de téléviseur pour mes étudiants à qui je voulais montrer les Docklands. Sans lui ce film serait resté « image morte ». Son talent, ses compétences et sa patience ont permis de donner une réalité à toutes les idées que j’avais et dont je ne mesurais pas toujours la difficulté technique ou le temps de travail qu’elles impliquaient. C’est plus qu’agréable de travailler avec quelqu’un dont le premier réflexe face à une suggestion est de considérer qu’elle est de l’ordre du possible. Ensuite, je voudrais commencer par remercier mes filles, Ambre et Lou, dont la présence constante à mes côtés m’a forcé à la concision et à l’efficacité durant la fin de cette thèse, et qui, à leur manière, m’ont apporté distanciation et relativité, soutien et réconfort. (Mon seul reproche porterait sur les interruptions aussi innocentes qu’intempestives de mon disque dur, lorsque ce bouton devenait leur dernière alternative ludique, après avoir réussi à en imaginer bien d’autres). Je voudrais remercier Ambre pour les heures qu’elle a passées à côté de moi en s’occupant toute seule, et Lou pour les kilomètres qu’elle a fait avec moi in utero, dans les Docklands, et qui sont peut-être responsables de son dynamisme actuel. Il était temps que cette thèse s’achève car Lou, d’ici quelques semaines, ne tiendra plus debout sous mon bureau et le jeu préféré d’Ambre, lorsqu’elle part au 4 travail (avec mes chaussures au pied– surtout celles dont les talons claquent bien) consiste à taper le plus vite possible sur un clavier d’ordinateur imaginaire. Qu’elles sachent toutes les deux que la fin de mon congé parental sera cette fois-ci conforme à la législation et consacré à « m’occuper réellement de mes enfants » - même si je pense l’avoir en partie fait, la réalité de la condition féminine étant ce qu’elle est…(mais ceci serait l’objet d’une autre… thèse…) A ce propos, mes remerciements les plus importants vont à Cédric qui a assumé la tâche de « basse continue » avec brio et maestria dans ces dernières semaines, m’obligeant à revoir toutes mes théories féministes. Par ailleurs, s’il a sans doute – quoiqu’il en dise - moins vécu avec les rues de Canary Wharf que moi avec Cuthbert et ses amis, il a toujours été là pour me montrer le côté positif des choses, corriger les notes de bas de pages, ou m’expliquer « sans affect » ce qu’il pensait de ma thèse. Qu’il soit donc ici remercié pour tout ce qui est dicible et ce qui ne l’est pas. Qu’il sache que depuis 11 ans, je n’ai jamais regretté qu’il se soit incrusté dans le cadre de ma photo, au Maroc. Ensuite, je voudrais remercier : Mes parents, pour l’année de bonheur pur qu’ils nous ont offerte dans le Lauragais en nous prêtant leur maison de Mireval comme si c’était la nôtre, ce qui a permis le mûrissement définitif de cette thèse. Mon père, qui m’a transmis son goût de l’exigence et de l’excellence, et qui m’a tout appris en matière de vidéo et surtout l’essentiel : à savoir que le plus important pour faire un bon film était d’avoir quelque chose à dire. Ma mère, qui m’a transmis son goût de l’honnêteté intellectuelle, et qui m’a non seulement offert un nombre incalculable d’heures de travail, mais surtout une inestimable paix de l’esprit pendant ces moments où elle jouait avec Ambre, au square rue de Châtillon, dans le jardin de Mireval ou dans la cabane de Tennie, à être Léone ou je ne sais quel personnage de leur vie commune. J’espère que Lou ne regrettera pas que ma thèse ait fini si tôt et n’ait pas pu profiter du même régime ! Marie, pour ses paquets géants de mikados et ses sucres de bain effervescents, qui m’ont permis de tenir le coup et de ne pas lâcher prise, au bon moment, dans les dernières semaines. Fanny, pour qui je ne trouve pas de raison en rapport avec ma thèse, mais parce que c’est ma sœur. Julien, pour la participation à distance, mais en temps réel, au montage de mon film grâce aux plans de Londres, incorporés sitôt reçu dans le montage du film et pour les photos de Google Earth que je n’ai pas eu le temps d’exploiter. Alexis, pour le confort de son matelas gonflable et le charme de son studio londonien, dont Cédric, moi et l’université française avons profité à plusieurs reprises. 5 Caroline et XY, qui je l’espère me pardonnera d’avoir eu l’idée saugrenue d’arriver à terme au même moment que lui, en ce mois de décembre 2005 Laure et Stéphane, qui nous ont permis de nous saouler d’urbanité new- yorkaise à deux reprises et m’ont permis de comprendre toute l’importance de l’espace public.
