02 Western Sydney Wanderers FC VS SYDNEY FC NO SHORTAGE OF MOTIVATION IN SYDNEY DERBY

There could not be more at stake for the third and final instalment No shortage of the Sydney derby for season 2012/13. of Motivation It seems inconceivable that this rivalry is less than a season old; such is the depth of the feeling between in Sydney the two clubs on all levels. The geographical divide of Sydney, the vast difference in club culture and the opposing approach to just about Derby everything will ensure Sydney football observers will be either red and black or light blue and nothing in between. Instead of spending its formative years in the shadow of its older sibling, the Wanderers club has already upstaged Sydney FC in performance in its first year and is showing a growth trajectory that threatens to match its overall size in a very short time. Tonight’s clash is a tale of two clubs and will have a significant bearing on their respective seasons, but for one more than the other. Sydney FC is in a dogfight for a spot in the top six and anything less than a point would be a major blow to its chances, considering its -8 goal difference. Sydney will be hungry, desperate and keen to cut its cross city rival down to size, especially considering the 2-0 loss in the second derby in front of its own fans. And the Sky Blues have some dangerous players capable of scoring important and individual goals in striker and the one and only . In many respects they will fancy their chances as they meet the Wanderers at their most vulnerable state all season without the suspended dynamo , injured fullback Jerome Polenz (quad) and injury clouds over midfielders Shinji Ono and . They are expected to throw caution to the wind and they would know that they will need to score to have any chance, such has been their wobbly defence this season. The Wanderers is a side on a ten- match winning streak and boasts a seemingly interchangeable bench that seamlessly compliments the structure, skill and hunger of the starting 11 whenever needed. This season has been pretty much run as smooth as you can hope for a team that’s just come into the League. When you look at it at as a whole there’s not much that has gone wrong and we are riding a wave at the moment on and off the pitch which has been fantastic. It’s actually been an honour to be part of something so special and it’s a one-of-a-kind season because something like this won’t be replicated again. It’s been really enjoyable for everyone at the club.

24 Western Sydney Wanderers FC VS SYDNEY FC Hail, Hail the Wanderers HAIL, HAIL THE WANDERERS It appears the appreciation for the Western Sydney Wanderers has extended past the round ball – we’ve got fans in other sports who admire what has been achieved by the club in our inaugural Hyundai A-League season.

I had never really been a big soccer fan, but when I heard that Western Sydney were getting a team, and growing up in Western Sydney, I thought if there was ever a time to follow the A-League, it was now. The first game I attended was on New Years Day. The crowd and the atmosphere had me hooked from kick-off. A few weeks later on Australia Day I went to another game with some American teammates. I had them singing for the Wanderers the entire night! The way the Wanderers have captured the Trent Hodkinson - hearts of everyone in Western Sydney Canterbury Bulldogs Israel Folau – is nothing short of amazing. Growing up it was always rugby league in my house, followed by Aussie Rules, but I’ve always had a soft spot for football. I see some similarities between us and the Wanderers. There doesn’t seem to be a focus on any one player and the boys work hard for each other. There’s great team unity and a positive culture, which brought us success in 2012. Fingers crossed it will bring similar success to the red and black in April.
