ST. JOSEPH NEWS St December 14, 2018 ST. JOSEPH NEWS St. Joseph Catholic School assists parents in developing good stewards who are both spiritually and academically prepared to live their lives in honor of God. They read a ton and surpassed their AR goals! And they put on an EXPRESS MON. POLAR EXPRESS incredible Christmas program that drew us all closer to our DEC. 17 EXTRAVAGANZA Lord! They finished this semester STRONG. I love these EXTRAVAGANZA ! kids and am so proud of them! This next week, we are TUES.     The Christmas Candy Cane The Christmas Candy Cane Where it came from and what it means to us By: Cousin Jeff, for Riley and Weston, the coolest 2 nd cousins in the world ~ December 2005 ☺ The story we’ve all heard for many generations about a candy maker in Indiana who wanted to make a candy to be a testimony to Christ is close, but not entirely true. It’s had some embellishing. Candy Canes were originally all white and straight and existed long before there was an Indiana. Indiana became a state in 1816 but candy canes began appearing in Europe in the latter 1600’s. Best tradition records the Cologne Cathedral bending them into the shape of shepherds’ staffs about 1670 to represent the Good Shepherd Jesus Christ. The candies were then given out to help settle restless children during choir. Christmas cards prior to 1900 have both straight and bent white canes depicted. But canes with red stripes, typically 3 small and 1 large, began appearing on Christmas cards in the early 1900’s. It’s difficult, if not impossible, to document a perfect history. However, documentable history and tradition agree as follows: In the late 1800’s to early 1900’s, the Indiana candy maker did want to make a Christmas candy incorporating symbols for the birth and ministry of Jesus Christ. He wisely crafted his Christmas candy around an exiting favorite which already had Christian symbolism attached to it, the bent candy cane. The bent candy cane already symbolized our Good Shepherd whose staff reaches down into the ditches of life to lift up us fallen lambs who, like all sheep, have gone astray.

    Lesson Plans that Work Nicholas of Myra Lesson Plans for Older and Younger Children Feast Day, December 6 Nicholas of Myra c. 270-343 The saints are “the lights of the world in every generation,” people whose lives and deeds have shone brightly and helped others more closely follow God. There are saints who lived long ago and there are saints living and working in the world today, saints who are known by the church and saints who are known only to God. We say that the church—we—are part of the Communion of Saints, the company of all faithful people, connected through our baptism to those Christians who have died, those who are alive now, and those who haven’t yet been born. The word “saint” means holy. In the Episcopal Church we have a Calendar of Saints, holy men and women we remember in prayer and with readings from the Bible on their feast day. Supplies needed: white cloth for prayer table, a candle. For all children: gold foil-wrapped chocolate coins. For older children: a Bible, gold foil-wrapped chocolate coins, clementines, photocopies of the St. Nicholas story, small candy canes to represent a Bishop’s crozier, other small useful items such as warm socks, lip balm, tissues (optional). For younger children: white paper sacks, holiday stickers, markers. Prepare: Prepare your prayer/gathering space with a small table, or space with a piece of cloth. On this cloth place a white candle. You may wish to place an image of Nicholas on the table. You may also want to have a small Christmas stocking and a clementine.
