THE FINAL WORD…

Neil Percival Young (born November 12, 1945 in Toronto, Ontario) is a Canadian (yes, he retained his Canadian citizenship) singer, songwriter, guitarist, engineer, environmental activist, and philanthropist. He grew up in Manitoba and formed his first band, The Jades, while in junior high school. While with the Jades, he developed his characteristic melodic guitar style to go along with his mournful, untrained voice.

In 1963, he formed an instrumental folk-rock group called the Squires. He then dropped out of high school and began performing in Fort William at local coffee houses and clubs. Local D.J. Ray Delatinski (a.k.a. Ray Dee) produced some demos for Young. In the mid 60's he decided to leave the Squires and began touring the folk clubs in Winnipeg as a solo act. While in Winnipeg, he wrote a song that was recorded by the rock group, The Guess Who that went on to become a top 40 Canadian hit.

In 1966, Young and bassist Bruce Palmer packed their possessions into Young's black hearse and drove to Los Angeles California. There they co-founded the band Buffalo Springfield and recorded a bestselling album that got them a large following and acclaim for skilled instrumental pieces, songwriting, harmonies, and vocal composition. By the late 60's he embarked again on a solo career backed by a group called Crazy Horse. In 1969 he joined Crosby, Stills and Nash in a contentious relationship, and parted ways in the early 1970's. After leaving CSN &Y, he returned to a solo career. He recorded several albums in the 1970.s and 1980's some of which were acclaimed and commercial successes. In the 1990's he toured with other acts such as Booker T., Sonic and Pearl Jam.

In the 2000's he released songs that were patriotic and anti-war. Since 1968, his career has spanned over 45 years, with 35 studio albums, and continual experimentation with musical styles (including some blues). He accompanied himself on several instruments, including piano, harmonica, electric guitar, and claw-hammer
