A former student who became a fellow professor of moral theology at Maynooth remembers a valued mentor and friend. By PATRICK HANNON Covid brought added poignancy to the obsequies for Maynooth’s Professor Enda McDonagh on the last weekend in February: so few to say farewell to one whose life touched the lives of so many, whose welcome to all was always generous and warm. And the chants seemed somehow more plaintive, fewer voices and from a distance, along the length of the great College Chapel. It was just over a year since he had left Maynooth, his home since he arrived there as a student in 1948, for the care of the staff of Holy Family Residence in Roebuck Road in Dublin. Enda McDonagh was born in Bekan, Co. Mayo on 27 June 1930, second of three sons of teachers, educated locally and at St Jarlath’s College, Tuam, whence to Maynooth, a student for the presbyterate of Tuam. His first degree was a BSc and in 1951 he began a study of theology which culminated in a Doctorate in Divinity in 1957. Though encouraged by Professor James McConnell to pursue science, he was directed by his archbishop to the Angelicum in Rome, and it was a time when you went where you were sent. A year later he was appointed to a chair in Moral Theology and Canon Law in Maynooth.

    Statement of Archbishop Eamon Martin on the publication of the report by the Commission of Inquiry into Mother & Baby Homes • “Above all we must continue to find ways of reaching out to those whose personal testimonies are central to this Report” – Archbishop Eamon I welcome the publication of the Mother & Baby Homes Report. As a Church leader today, I accept that the Church was clearly part of that culture in which people were frequently stigmatized, judged and rejected. For that, and for the long-lasting hurt and emotional distress that has resulted, I unreservedly apologise to the survivors and to all those who are personally impacted by the realities it uncovers. Mindful of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, which calls us to protect life and dignity and to treat everyone – especially little children and all who are vulnerable – with love, compassion and mercy, I believe the Church must continue to acknowledge before the Lord and before others its part in sustaining what the Report describes as a “harsh … cold and uncaring atmosphere”. Although it may be distressing, it is important that all of us spend time in the coming days reflecting on this Report which touches on the personal story and experience of many families in Ireland. The Commission’s Report helps to further open to the light what was for many years a hidden part of our shared history and it exposes the culture of isolation, secrecy and social ostracizing which faced “unmarried mothers” and their children in this country. I ask all those who are in positions of leadership in the Church to study this lengthy report carefully and especially to spend time reflecting on the courageous testimonies of the witnesses to the Commission.

    Pope elevates Ireland’s national Knock Shrine to international status DUBLIN (CNS) — Pope Francis has elevated the National Sanctuary of Our Lady of Knock to the status of an International Shrine of Eucharistic and Marian Devotion. In a message delivered from the Vatican via video link March 19, the feast of St. Joseph, Pope Francis described it as an “important moment in the life of the shrine” and “a great responsibility.” With all churches in Ireland closed to public worship under Level 5 COVID-19 restrictions, the pope’s message was relayed to an empty Apparition Chapel at Knock Shrine, where Mass was concelebrated by Archbishop Michael Neary of Tuam and Knock’s rector, Father Richard Gibbons. The Mass was livestreamed. Speaking in Italian, Pope Francis said the designation would mean always having “your arms wide open as a sign of welcome to every pilgrim who may arrive from any part of the world, asking nothing in return but only recognizing him as a brother or a sister who desires to share the same experience of fraternal prayer.” Paying tribute to the Irish faithful he said: “You have been a missionary people. We cannot forget how many priests left their homeland in order to become missionaries of the Gospel. Nor can we forget the many lay people who immigrated to faraway lands but still kept their devotion to Our Lady.” The apparition in Knock occurred Aug. 21, 1879, when Mary, St. Joseph and St. John the Evangelist appeared at the south gable of the Knock parish church. (Titus 2:11-12) We invite you to reflect on an extract from a speech given by Blessed Paul VI while on his journey in the Holy Land. On Sunday 5 January 1964, he visited the Basilica of the Annunciation in Nazareth and declared: Nazareth is the school of initiation into the understanding of the life of Jesus. It is the school of the gospel. Here one learns to observe, to listen, to meditate, to penetrate into the profound and mysterious meaning of that simple, humble, lovely apparition of God among men. Here one learns almost imperceptibly to imitate Him. Here one learns the way by which we can enter into the under- standing of Christ. Here one understands the need of observing the setting of His dealings with us: the places, the time, the customs, the language, the religious atmosphere — all of which Jesus used to reveal Himself to the world. (…) It is here, in this school, that one comes to grasp how necessary it is to be spiritually disciplined, if one wishes to follow the teachings of the gospel and to become a follower of Christ. Oh, how we would like to become children again and to return to learn our lessons in this humble, and yet sublime school of Nazareth.
