London Calling

The girl who wouldn’t give up

By Larry Meredith

There were twenty-one thousand spectators jammed into the stands at Eugene’s Hayward Field on the evening of June 28, 2012 and they were all watching the women’s 5000-meter final, a race to determine the three runners who would represent the United States in the London Olympics for that event. Of that 21,000, there are only about one hundred of us who can say that we witnessed the greatest comeback in the history of the Olympic Trials. That’s because the other 20,900 viewers had little or no knowledge of Kim Conley and with 800 meters left their attention was naturally drawn to the top three runners, now pulling far ahead of the field. They would not notice Kim again until the top two finishers had crossed the line and there were just 50 meters left in her race. They have no idea what they missed.

Among Kimmy’s 100 followers at Eugene were her parents, Dave and Melanie. If you were to meet them, even there at the legendary stadium of Bill Bowerman and Steve Prefontaine, you would not Photo by Val Sell immediately guess that they were the parents of an elite American 5000-meter runner. For starters, On the victory stand at Hayward Field Melanie is English and although she has lived in the U.S. for many years, there is no mistaking her lovely accent. London Calling (continued) wasn’t going to make the standard and now she could just focus on racing and forget about the clock. A wind that had kicked up an hour earlier had died down and I thought to myself that this is a little piece of luck that Kim will need if she has to push the pace early in the race. The runners neared the starting line and a strange thing happened. A group of

London qualifiers from the events held earlier in the week were marched onto the track, showing off the Nike team uniforms that every American track & field Olympian would wear in a few short weeks. It seemed like an advertisement but I’ll bet I’m not the only one who thought that those women at the starting line were either going to be more motivated than usual or feel more pressured by the symbolism on display.

They announced the runners, one-by-one and on the big screen we saw that Kimmy had that same full smile as she waved to the camera. Our hearts were in our throats by the time the gun fired and I was as proud of a runner as I have ever been when I saw Kim go straight to the front. Immediately she knew that if the London “A” standard was going to be met tonight, she was the one who would have to work for it. There were seven runners in the field who already Photo by Val Sell had met the “A” earlier in the year. They had no interest in getting involved in a fast race.
