We do this by investing in athletes, sports and the UK high-performance system; through the hosting of major events in the UK; by ensuring our funded sports demonstrate world-leading standards of culture, governance and integrity and by contributing to the development of sport at an international level.

10 Role Specification

Job Purpose The Director of Performance is a key leadership position in UK Sport (UKS). As a member of the Directors’ team this role is significant in co-shaping and co-leading the current and future UKS strategy and the effective leadership of the organisation. Within that context, the portfolio of this role is to be the strategic performance lead within UKS for Olympic and Paralympic sport in the UK. Central to the success of this role is providing outstanding leadership both internally and externally. Internally, the Director of Performance leads and develops a talented and professional team of around 50 people. It is also responsible for providing expert strategic performance planning and management to the CEO, Board and Directors’ team. Externally it is focused on leadership of the performance relationships with our partners in sports. Critically this role is instrumental in the oversight and ongoing management of performance investments into sports, which in this current cycle is circa £460m. The person in this role will be constantly looking towards the future to drive the evolution of high- performance sport, seeking the next level of competitive advantage to keep the UK at the forefront of Olympic and Paralympic sport, not just in what we win but in how we win; helping us to achieve medals and more. The breadth of the remit is necessarily broad and far reaching however, with the ability to build appropriate support from within the leadership team supporting the director, there is scope to adjust how the key priorities can best be delivered.

Performance • Drive the evolution of Olympic and Paralympic high-performance sport, constantly striving for the next big global leaps and innovations to bring to the UK • Provide expert performance advice and reporting to the CEO, Chair and Board on all performance matters • Shape the development of UKS’s Performance Investment Strategy and funding model for National Governing Bodies and athletes (including support programmes) to ensure targets for future winter and summer Olympic and Paralympic Games can be met with a strong emphasis on care and support of athletes • Assess, monitor and review UKS’s Performance Investment. Lead on both targeted interventions for improvement in partnerships with sports and on Annual Investment reviews and supporting sports in their post Games reviews • Evolve UKS’s Performance services including sports intelligence, people and culture development so that they remain leading edge in their support to sports • Lead the work with Performance Directors of funded sports in a support and challenge role to monitor and optimise their effectiveness in delivering performance pathway programmes • Inform the development and be responsible for delivery of UK Sport/Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport key performance related indicators

• Develop meaningful partnerships with key performance stakeholders by building positive and constructive relationships to drive the development of high-performance sport in the UK – identifying and supporting elite athletes holistically, building on success to date and maintaining the positive momentum through future Olympic and Paralympic cycles • Work with sports to continue to drive a positive culture where athletes and all people involved in supporting them are able to thrive • Lead and develop UKS’s performance relationship with the Home Country Sports Councils and the UK wide Institute network to ensure appropriate alignment of the performance pathway and to maximise the impact of public funding • Lead UKS’s performance relationship and strategy development with its wholly owned subsidiary – The English Institute of Sport • Provide direction for the development and delivery of world class technical (including coaching and athlete) development and strategic support services ensuring the continuous development of people working in world class programmes • Be a spokesperson for UKS on UK wide high-performance sports matters and within that build key external and influential relationships including with Government representatives

Person Specification

You are, above all an individual with proven exceptional leadership skills who can inspire and unite people in the organisation and across the wider high performance system. You will be expected to role model our values and leadership competencies and consistently display the behaviours that support them. You have developed a deep knowledge of high-performance sport, most likely gained from having operated within the field of Olympic and Paralympic Sport and already at a senior leadership position with the ability to listen, hear and bring the voice of sports. You will be confident in leading effectively the performance investment planning process which in the last cycle amounted to £450m, the person in this role will also need relevant financial management experience. Finally you have courage and confidence to seek new ideas, challenge the status quo and to make crucial decisions for the system - operating at all times with absolute integrity.
