BUILDING A HEALTHY WORSHIP MINISTRY

DO YOU HAVE A CLEAR VISION?

VISION IS THE PATH THAT WE WALK ON TOGETHER • There Are 2 Verses That Communicate The Value Of Having A Clear Vision

Amos 3:3 (NKJV) 3 Can two walk together, unless they are agreed? Habakkuk 2:2–3 (NKJV) 2 Then the LORD answered me and said: “Write the vision And make it plain on tablets, That he may run who reads it.

• The key is writing down your vision and making it clear so others can understand it, agree to it and run with it

5 TYPES OF VISION • VISION: A God given picture of what He wants to do • PROVISION: God affirms the vision through resources • ENVISION: The leader’s job is to share the vision to others • REVISION: When someone wants to change the original vision • DIVISION: When you have 2 visions (nature abhors a vacuum) o If you don’t have a vision, people will do whatever they want to do o It’s important to know what you want

COMMUNICATING YOUR VISION • All Pastors Have A Vision For Worship (What You Like And Don’t Like) o The Pastor Is The Worship Leader Of The Church o You Provide The Direction For Worship o You Select Leaders, Envision Them And Entrust Them With Leadership To Carry Out The Vision o A Vision In It's Simplest Form Is What You Like, What You Don't Like o It's Unique To Your Fellowship • Most Pastors Have A Hard Time Communicating Their Vision o Pastor Chuck's Vision He Communicated To Me o Include Hymns, But Don't Stylize Them So People Can't Sing Them

o Sing Songs That People Know... He Wanted Total Involvement o Teach Songs That Are Easy To Learn And Hard To Forget o He Wanted A Message, Not Highly Repetitive Chorus o Begin Uptempo And Fun o End In A Time Of Awe In The Presence Of God • Write It Down, Make It Easy To Understand And Be Consistent o WHAT IS OUR MISSION: TO WORSHIP • Inspire Through Relationship o Creatives Are Led By Relationship o Spend Time With Them... Meeting Weekly With Them o Invest In Them By Sending Them To Training Events, Pastors Conferences o Inspire Them By Showing Them What You Like... Pointing To A Model That You Want And Then Let Them Figure Out How To Implement It o What If There Isn't An Existing Model? Then Use Youtube And Point To A Model You Like o You Could Even Use A Model Like Bethel Music, But Talk Through What You Don't Like, What You Don't Want To See And What You Do Like • Be clear. Be honest. Your People • Be Patient... Vision Takes Time To Implement o It could be a 2-3 year journey to get to where you want to be

WHAT IS WORSHIP HISTORICALLY? • NOTE: I was the A&R / Marketing Director for Maranatha! Music and my job was to communicate the history of the Song of Faith through the and specifically through Calvary Chapel • I want to share with you some observations because I believe these are some of the key values we’ve lost that we need to recover • The Sound Of A New Song o Lonnie Frisbee prayed for me when I was 17 and I was filled with the Holy Ghost! o Lonnie would say... what God was doing among us created an immediate demand for something new to sing. o The new style was a combination of scripture songs and choruses that were influenced by the music of the day alongside hymns o Psalm 40:3 says... He has put a new song in my mouth – Praise to our God; many will see it and fear, and will trust in the Lord!

o Pastor Chuck made a place for these new songs to be heard • Variety Of Styles / Multi-Generational o Pete Jacobs from Children of the Day said... there were different styles of ministry at Calvary Chapel o There was a Calvary Chapel on Sunday morning with hymns led by a pastor in coat and tie o There was the Calvary Chapel you would see at Lonnie’s service where Lonnie would have a band play and then preach and give an invitation for people to be saved o There was the Calvary Chapel you would see on a Wednesday night with praise choruses and a study and you would never have recognized they were the same church o Chuck made a place for hymns, praise choruses and the song of faith from groups like Love Song, Mustard Seed Faith, Parable, Sweet Comfort and Daniel Amos • Spirit-Led o In the Cover of the songbook... Rejoice in Jesus always it said... music can be a tremendous vehicle to bring us into an awareness of God’s presence o The songs didn’t bring us into God’s Presence because God is already present... the songs made us aware of His Presence o In the bulletin of Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa it said... we believe the worship of God should be Spiritual. Therefore we remain flexible and yielded to the to direct our worship • Biblically Based / Christ Centered Worship o Pete Jacobs said many of the songs were written after listening to a sermon; there was a direct correlation o John Higgins, the original brought to Pastor Chuck’s house by his daughter Jan, said that often songs emerged that were a direct response to the teaching, others reflected the theme of God’s love that Pastor Chuck managed to reinforce no matter what text he was sharing o The worship of Calvary Chapel was a reflection of the Word of God and I believe we need to sing songs that are Biblical o EX: Reckless Love, Come Holy Spirit, Heart Of Worship o We don’t sing songs that manipulate us into having an experience, we sing songs that are the overflow of our experience with Jesus o We worship the God of the and we align everything to His Word.

• An Encounter With Jesus (Focus On ) o Chuck Girard said... to us it was music as a vehicle of communication. The content was the response of God’s undeserved love, His Amazing Grace. It came out of our relationship with God. o Pastor Chuck would often say... the most important thing is an encounter with Jesus Christ o Is the most important thing in worship an encounter with Jesus Christ? o We are engaged people and we lead engaged people • Prayerful Approach (Our Prayers Set To Music / Sung Prayer) o in Effective Prayer Life said, the first form of prayer is worship. IT is a spontaneous result from the conscious awareness of God. As I realize the greatness of God and His nearness to me and His love for me, I naturally respond with deep, inner worship of Him. o In my book Let It Rise: A Manual For Worship... I wrote, The worship leader is the prayer leader. If worship is our prayers set to music, if worship leading is leading the congregation in sung prayer, if prayer is the language of worship, then the life of the worship leader is a life devoted to prayer. • Characterized By Love o Calvary Chapel provided a unique environment o There was Lonnie Frisbee’s presence, appearance and gifts o There was Pastor Chuck’s fatherly and welcoming manner and authority o There was the profound sense of the love of God that took two polar extremes and united them in such a way that it sparked a cultural revolution o The most repeated description of Calvary Chapel’s message, it’s atmosphere and Chuck Smith’s demeanor is the real experience of God’s love... I felt love o Chuck Smith in his book Love: The More Excellent Way said... the greatest demonstration the church can give to the world is God’s love within the body, each member for the other. When we love one another with this kind of genuine, unfeigned affection, the world will take note o We love each other like a good family. Encouraging and honest. • Characterized by Excellence

o The motivation for excellence wasn’t to create great music o The motivation for excellence was to offer the best to God o We do our best to move people towards Jesus with music o We strive to grow others in their gifts to worship Jesus o I remember one of my worship team members (who is no longer with me) made the comment... it doesn’t have to be good... it’s just for God o Poor performance is distracting, it’s uninviting, it’s a stumbling block for unbelievers o It’s better to have fewer musicians who sound excellent than a full band that sounds terrible

WHAT DO WORSHIP LEADERS NEED?

LEADERSHIP PRINCIPLE • Great Worship Leaders Are Discipled By Great Pastors • How are you investing resources (time, money, energy) into your worship leaders

WORSHIP LEADERS NEED.... • Relational Leadership o Philippians 2:20 Paul said.. I have no one else like Timothy, who genuinely cares about your welfare o How do you think Timothy developed the same love for the people that Paul had? He spent time with Paul o David Rosales meets weekly with his worship leader, separate from the rest of the staff o He spends time discussing song selection, order of service, special services, philosophy of ministry and includes his worship leader in a weekly discipleship meeting for future leaders o After several years of discipleship, his worship ministry is one of the best and his worship leader is a great worship leader because he’s been discipled by a great pastor... David Rosales • Visionary Leadership o The worst thing a pastor can say to a worship leader is I’m the word guy, you’re the music guy... go do your thing o I stay in my lane and you stay in yours o That is a recipe for failure

o Creatives need communication so they don’t create in a vacuum, invest all their time and energy on something and it’s wrong o That doesn’t mean micromanage... that kills creativity o It does mean setting clear boundaries and expectations such as... we are only going to sing songs we can biblically explain o Values and vision create culture o Instead of telling them to not sing a song, ask them to find the scripture to support what is being said through the song o Set the example and reinforce your values through discussion o NOTE: Visionary leadership will also see future ministry potential in the worship leader o Worship leaders have a shelf life and a good visionary leader will recognize the overall gifting of the worship leader and disciple them towards a bigger calling than simply leading worship o I’m grateful for my pastor who invested in me... sent me to school of ministry, sent me to pastors conferences, spent time teaching me how to to others • Leadership Integrity o Integrity means you say what you mean and you do what you say o Integrity means you treat each other with mutual respect o Integrity is the basis of trust.... trust is given, mistrust is earned o When a creative person loses trust in a leader, it makes it difficult for the creative person to function under the leader because the creative process is connected to trust (faith) o Pastor Chuck never told me what songs to sing, but he did requests songs on occasion... he trusted me and it fostered trust in me for his leadership o Pastor Chuck never told me how to do my job as a worship leader, but his expectations of what he wanted to see were very clear and he let me know when I didn’t meet them o He wasn’t demeaning, but he was direct and consistent in the things he expected to see • Collaborative Leadership o Music by nature is collaborative o A collaborative leader doesn’t just tell someone what they want them to do o A collaborative leader shares the goals and the vision for what is going to happen and then invites everyone to share what they are going to do to help fulfill the vision

o Lead creatives by giving them the WHY not just the WHAT o When a worship leader is told what to do and not given the opportunity to grow and to make mistakes, they will most likely leave because they will feel unwanted and unsupported o The more I communicate with the worship leader as to where I’m headed in my teaching, the more effective the worship leader will be in partnering with me o Pastor Chuck would always let me know what his text was, what his message title was so I could pray and ask God to give me direction for worship. • Pastoral Leadership o This is often overlooked but worship leaders are first sheep, then servants o They need prayer and ministry like everyone else o That’s why I want my worship teams to be in service, hearing the same message as everyone else o The worship leader is the 2nd most visible person in the church and often the least theologically trained... that shouldn’t be o It is my responsibility to equip and train my leaders so they are equipped to do the work of the ministry o Worship Leading is primarily a pastoral ministry... so treat them as future pastors and teachers
