Good afternoon everybody and a warm welcome to Horndean FC for this crucial Sydenhams Wessex Premier fixture the first Saturday league match to be held in the newly refurbished Glen Mex Stadium. (Welcome also to all those reading this on the website who have just been informed that we and the league have been returned to lockdown status- enjoy the read!)Yes, indeed folks, it is that uncertain! Should our luck hold we may well be looking a near maximum (allowed) attendance as supporters of our larger neighbours, from the English Premier to Southern League South and West, seek out live football and a Bashley v Horndean encounter is indeed an attractive proposition for the football famished. We look forward to feeding you good football and only ask of you that you have patience with, and strictly obey, the safety measures in place for your peace of mind and the safety of others. Rules to this affect are changing daily and it would be wise to bring a facemask with you so as the be ready for all circumstances.

The Deans are at present sitting proudly at the top of the League. They did, however, lose their opening game FA Cup game to Bemerton Heath but followed this reverse with three straight league wins: home to Poppies and Fleet and away at Shaftesbury. A League Cup away victory to the much-fancied Portchester followed but the run was finished last Saturday when high flying Christchurch ended their FA Cup dreams 3-0.

Bashley on the other hand have only played two league games winning one at Portland but with cup victories against Andover New Street (League Cup) and away to Baffins (FA Vase). The common factor here is that both clubs have been beaten by Christchurch. A lot to play for and, hopefully, a crowd to please.

Enjoy the game and keep yourself and those about you safe by following the guidance.

Mike Cranidge Add a little bit of body text Bashley - The Wessex League & Beyond

In season 1985-86 Bashley finished fourth in the League Division Two behind Christchurch, Follands and Ringwood with the League also including such as Warsash, Malshanger and Sway but they presumably applied for and were accepted to the newly formed Wessex League for the following season, with their facilities no doubt playing a part in their acceptance. A big step up the ladder but the Club took it on their stride and at the end of the season topped the table, two points ahead of Road Sea, to become the inaugural Wessex League Champions. It was no “one season wonder” either for they went on to top the table for the following two seasons, four points and then eleven points clear, with Havant being the runners up each time. After their third success they were promoted to the Southern League South Division which again caused no problems as they won the title at the first time of asking, finishing five points clear of runners up Poole Town. The league also included Salisbury, Fareham and Andover plus opposition much further afield and four seasons after their travels included the short hop to Sway, they found themselves journeying to the likes of Canterbury and the Isle of Sheppey. So 1990-91 saw the Club in the Southern League Premier Division with local opposition in the shape of Dorchester, Poole and Weymouth – the last named finished bottom of the table – as well as established Clubs such as Worcester City, Gloucester and Dover. They finished a respectable tenth in that initial season and followed that up with fourth and ninth places before a poor season in 1993-94 saw them finish one from bottom and suffer relegation back to the South Division. There were five seasons in that Division with third place achieved in 1997-98 before it was all change again.

The Southern League have long had a passion for changing the names of their Divisions and suddenly Bashley were in Division East. Given that the Division also included Dorchester, Salisbury and Newport, “East” seemed something of a misnomer. Again, it was five seasons before further change, with fifth place in 2002-13 their best placing, before the FA’s strange version of geography struck with a move to the Isthmian League Division One which is largely based around London. Fleet were their “local” rivals and AFC Wimbledon topped the table before happily, after two seasons, they were transferred back to the Southern League South and West (another new title!) Back on home soil so to speak, with Thatcham, Andover, Winchester, Lymington and New Milton and Newport amongst the opposition, they carried all before them, amassing 102 points and earning promotion back to the Southern Premier. They finished ninth in their first season and enjoyed six further years at that level before being relegated back to the South and West Division which led to two very traumatic and miserable seasons. Major problems on and off the field saw them finish bottom both times and in the second season they conceded two hundred and one goals and returned to the Wessex League in 2016-17, nearly thirty years after they had left.

During the above period they competed in all three of the FA Competitions at various times and the following represent their best performance in each.

FA VASE 1987-88 Reached the last four and were drawn against Champions elect Emley from the Northern Counties East League – which at that time contained such delightfully named Clubs as Grimethorpe Miners Welfare and Harrogate Railway Athletic. The tie at home finished in a one all draw in front of 3,500 spectators, still a ground record, but a single goal for the home Club in Yorkshire sent them in to the Final.

FA TROPHY 1997-98 The Third Round and a two nil defeat at home by Hayes.FA CUP 1994-95 Second Round Proper. Lost one nil at home to Swansea City. One would perhaps have expected a Football League Club to attract the largest attendance but it is likely that there was a restriction on numbers at the time and it is likely that the Vase attendance mentioned above will never be bettered. So back to the Wessex League – not quite the full circle but the League are delighted to have them as members and perhaps provide a base for them to climb the ladder again. A History of Horndean

Horndean FC was formed in 1887. The first recorded game was played on the 19th Ocotber of that year against Red Star of Havant, which Red Star won 1-0. Until World War 1 all matches were friendlies and on one occasion the game was controlled by two umpires, one in each half of the field. Shortly after the 1914-18 war, the club joined the Waterlooville & District League and it was not until 1926-27 season, when the club was reformed that it won the league title, further successes followed in 1930, 31 and 32 winning the trophies outright together with the local cup. During the 1931-32 season the late Frank Bryson scored 83 goals, and during his time at Horndean he scored a total of 384. Both records remain to this day.

In the early days the club played on a pitch at Blendworth Hill, on ground behind the old workhouse opposite what is now the Colonial Bar, and later in a field behind the Brewers Arms in Five Heads Road and the pub was used for committee meetings. The original club house was opened in 1948 having been built by club members and supporters on land donated by Harry Heath, whose family have continued with the support of the club to this day. Horndean entered the Portsmouth League and in the 1953-54 season they won the division 2 title. Mr A.J.Rowe put together a successful youth team and in 1961-62 they won every game scoring 125 goals with only 15 against. Many of these players graduated to the first team and gained promotion to the Premier Division, and after winning the Premier title for three seasons running 1969, 70 & 71 they were accepted into the Hampshire League Division 4 in 1972. In 1979-80 they won the double, which included the Portsmouth Senior Cup played at Fratton Park. In 1986 we joined the newly formed Wessex League. The club house was rebuilt by Terry Cannon in 1987 after the infamous hurricane destroyed the old building. The dressing rooms and team room building was also built by Terry Cannon in August 1988.

In June 2008 the management team of Denmead & Purbrook took over the running of trouble stricken Horndean FC which was established over 121 years ago. This makes the club older than Portsmouth Football Club. When Pompey's plans are for a multi million pound stadium, Horndean had to make do with the development of a 25 year old shed, and a club house new roof. But thanks must go to all the volunteers that have given up their time in making this happen.

The management committee have plans to grow the club membership and develop the area so that it is used more often. We want to encourage the youth element so that there is a natural progression through the stages from youth to adult football. To date we have five adult men's teams and a ladies side. This is complemented by the new youth policy which is the start of our future. Top priority is to stabalise the finances of the club and ensure survival in the Wessex League top flight which Horndean has been a part of for many years. This is new territory for all of us involved in the club and it has been a steep learning curve, so please bear with us as your support is needed in helping this old girl to survive in the manner Mrs Berry would have expected.

Baffins v Bashley Match Report

All’s Well that Ends Well Baffins Milton Roves 2 Bashley 2 (Bashley win 4-3 on penalties) The FA Vase First Qualifying Round

After inauspicious start that involved arriving late after a long hold up on the M27 only to find that Bash captain and king-pin Brad Morris had withdrawn through illness, it didn’t look likely that it would be Bashley’s day. The visitors started with Harry Bunce on the bench and with young goalkeeper Sam Thompson and Jean-Pierre Alexander having their second first team starts. Both made their mark early in the half, Sam Thomson rushing out to bravely to salvage the ball from the flying feet of a Rovers’ attacker and JP Alexander disappointed to see his well worked shot saved by keeper Nick Jordan. The game was even with few chances at either end until two minutes from halftime when Josh Warren half controlled a high cross into the goalmouth inviting Tommy Scutt to nip in and score from close range and give Baffins the lead.

Bashley brought on the effervescent Harry Bunce for the second half, a move that brought instant purpose to their attack. Harry McGrath spang to life and his fierce shot was turned past the post by the flying keeper. The forward press continued and brought reward when Bash were awarded a penalty that Conor Whiteley emphatically dispatched. Within a minute of the restart, Bunce, first to a hopefully floated box-bound header, skilfully laid off to Whiteley who gratefully accepted a second goal that gave Bash the lead, There were still twenty-six minutes left to play and the game ignited. Whiteley keen to register a hat-trick had his shot tipped over the bar whilst Bunce’s one to one with the keeper ended in favour of Jordan. The Baffs, always dangerous, were rewarded for their endeavours when late substitute Sam Emeney scored with three minutes left to play . So it was down to penalties; Baffins didn’t help their cause by missing their first attempt and a save by Sam Thomson on attempt five made the final score 4-3 to the Bash with Lewis Ross, Dan Thompson, Harry Morgan and Harry McGrath finding the net for the visitors.
