On Thursday, July 26th, the music industry and the city of Chicago lost an icon. Dedry Jones, owner of the long-standing The Music Experience record store in the South Shore community, host of The Experience with Dedry Jones, and publisher of the online magazine, The Music Experience, passed away suddenly at the age of 64. He was a legend of a man who had an unmatched love for all kinds of music and sharing “experiences” and supporting musicians such as , Terisa Griffin, Gregory Porter, John Legend, Patti LaBelle, Fred Hammond, and many more. As noted in the Chicago Sun-Times, Dedry’s The Experience "transcended genres, delving into , swinging through , stopping by gospel, before hop-stepping through 80s dance and dabbling in hip hop. A history enthusiast as a teen at Hales Franciscan High School, he was a sharp interviewer who would uncover overlooked details and strip even the biggest celebrity musicians down to bare, raw emotion."

When it came to music, Dedry was an encyclopedia of information. If you had any question about a particular musician, if Dedry didn’t know the answer, he would make it his business to have an answer for you, in record time. He thoroughly enjoyed talking to people - whether it was an artist, the students whose lives he richly enhanced by training them in the industry, or a patron visiting his store - Dedry always took time to talk to anyone who needed his expertise and assistance. He was never too busy to chat!

Recently, WTTW launched The Experience with Dedry Jones, which showcased interviews and concerts with Brian Culbertson, Roberto Fonseca, and Jazzapalooza special guest, Avery Sunshine. In a Sun-Times interview, his friend, Terisa Griffin, noted "Dedry’s ability to 'make artists feel seen in an industry quick to chew them apart.' The Experience, though his dream, was a shared stage for artistry, for Chicago – and perhaps more. Musicians trusted Dedry and he became the platform from which many artists music careers were launched."

Dedry was no stranger to Trinity UCC. In 2011, as part of our 50th church anniversary, he hosted The Experience with Richard Smallwood, and in 2013, he returned to host The Experience with Donald Lawrence. Over the years, Dedry generously provided our members with tickets to his events. He loved Trinity and we loved him!

Dedry Jones was a legend, a true music lover and aficionado, and a great man who will be missed. We extend our heartfelt prayers for his family and friends, and the many lives he touched over the years.

The celebration of Dedry’s life took place this past Friday at the DuSable Museum of African American History.
