In England, children (and parents) will be looking forward to celebrating Christmas day. Not least for the presents. But children in the Canary Islands have to wait nearly two more weeks for their presents. You see, it is not Santa Claus or Father Christmas who brings the gifts. Following the Bible story, it is the three Kings or Wise Men who bring presents. It always falls on 6th January and across much of Europe, Kings' Day, or Dia del Reyes is a bigger event than Christmas day. It is known as Epiphany in the religious calendar. th On the morning of 6 , the quayside is packed with families, awaiting the arrival of the kings, because, of course, the Canaries are Islands and the camels cannot swim there. Instead, the colourfully costumed kings arrive by speedboats. After meeting the children , and being entertained by dancers and gymnasts, the kings start their procession around the island. Some of it is on camels, but much of it takes place in open sports cars and jeeps. Even Kings and wise men move with the times. They are escorted by Roman soldiers, to protect them from Herod. Many houses in the Canary Islands have balconies, but not many have chimneys. So instead of seeing Santa coming down a chimney, you will see rope ladders hanging from windows and balconies, for the king to climb up . I really enjoy King's Day in the Canary Islands, but I never found out whether the children leave anything for the Kings and camels, like we leave a mince pie and carrots for the reindeers. I guess I will have to go back again next year. With long-standing links to the coal industry, the village was home to the last remaining colliery in Leeds, which closed in 1992. Prior to development of the Millennium Community, Allerton Bywater had a population of around 4,000. Allerton Bywater Millennium Community was announced by John Prescott in 1998 as the second Millennium Community, after Greenwich in south east London. It lies on the former site of Allerton Colliery, control of which passed from the National Coal Board to English Partnerships (now the Homes and Communities Agency) in 1995. Initial work focused on land remediation and decontamination, dealing with issues relating to the legacy of the colliery such as capping pit-shafts. Flood alleviation was also necessary as the site lies within the River Aire floodplain and severe floods occurred in 2000 and 2002.

  • Lowther Lake Circular
LOWTHER LAKE CIRCULAR Fairly easy-going 5.5 mile walk with one stepping stile and no long inclines. The going can be muddy in wet weather walking around the lake; otherwise the paths are usually in good condition. Start point: Kippax Leisure Centre Car Park, Station Road, Kippax. LS25 7LQ Kippax - The village's historical roots are survived by the presence of an originally Anglo-Saxon church undergoing significant modification in Norman times. Despite being an administrative centre for hundreds of years, the population remained small and mostly agricultural until the late 1700s when coal mining began on a relatively small scale in local bell pits. The advent of deeper mining and the discovery of coal seams in Allerton Bywater saw Kippax undergo a rapid expansion in the 19th century into a typical northern mining community. Townclose Hills Local Nature Reserve (or Billy Wood as it is known locally) sits upon a knoll of magnesian limestone. From the plateau at the top of the hill there are beautiful panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The mosaic of habitats found here – including limestone grassland, woodlands, meadows, scrub and a woodland glade support a wide variety of plant and animal life, and much of the site has been designated a “site of special scientific interest” by Natural England in recognition of its national importance for conservation. The origin of the name Billy Wood is lost in the mists of time, but it may refer to a person named Billy or even William, as one document calls the area William Wood. On all official papers it is called Townclose Hills, and references to the area date back to 1628.
