TIM'S WALKER OF THE WEEK

This time around, the Walker of the Week is shared between two of our top Victorian walkers, compliments of fine walks on Sunday at Middle Park

• 16 year old Adam Garganis came second in our VRWC 35km Ray Smith Trophy club championship, walking the excellent time of 3:04:54. His previous longest race was in this year's LBG Carnival 10 mile in Canberra so he has now upped the ante by a significant amount. He finished full of walking and seemed none the worse for his long walk.

• 65 year old Heather Carr is quickly rewriting the Masters record books now that she has progressed up a division. She contested the VRWC 15km roadwalk on Sunday, crossing the finish line in a time of 1:32:41 for a new W65 Victorian (and perhaps Australian?) record.

WHAT'S COMING UP

Our VRWC winter season has now finished except for one final event, namely our VRWC 24 Hour Carnival which will be held on the weekend of 4-5 October 2014. That's only 3 weeks away now! Events include 24 Hours, 12 Hours, 6 Hours and RWA 100km. Check it out or enter at http://www.centurions.org.au/event2014.shtml.

Then we have a rest for everyone until our VRWC summer season commences on Sunday 26 October at Middle Park . See http://www.vrwc.org.au/vrwcs15.shtml for the full VRWC summer program. And a further reminder that entries have now opened for our annual Falls Creek training camp which will run from Sunday 28 December 2014 to Saturday 10 January 2015. AV & VRWC ROAD WALK C'SHIPS, MIDDLE PARK, SUNDAY 14 SEPTEMBER

Conditions were perfect for the final carnival of the Victorian winter roadwalking season and what better way to finish off than with our long distance championships. The 7:30AM start time saw a small number of hardy individuals toe the line for the Victorian 50km championship, the VRWC 35km club championship (the Ray Smith Trophy) and a VRWC 6 Hour walk. 32 year old Chris Erickson and 16 year old Adam Garganis (now that's an interesting age comparison, worthy of the great sports commentator Bruce McAveny) strode to the front and were never headed, taking first and second in our VRWC 35km club championship with 2:53:53 and 3:04:54 respectively. Adam's previous longest race was the LBG Carnival 10 Mile walk so it was a huge effort by him to successfully negotiate his way through such a challenging long distance.

Once they finished, attention turned to the Victorian 50km where Simon Evans had a big lead but was struggling. But we did not need to worry as his lead over former international Michael Harvey was a big one and the result was never in doubt - Simon taking first place with 5:55:54 and Michael setting for second with 6:10:18. Simon's win in this championship ensured that he won the Athletics Victoria Norm Goble Trophy for the third time in 4 years. With medals in four of the five Victorian championships on offer (gold in the 50km, silver in the 20km and 30km and bronze in the 15km), he was always going to be hard to beat this season. And a special mention also for John Kilmartin whose 6 Hour distance of 49.141km was a PB by over 1km.

VRWC 20km 15km and 10km non-championship races were also contested, the highlight coming from Heather Carr who broke the W65 Australian record for the 15km roadwalk. There is no stopping Heather now that she has entered her new age group. Obviously her time also set a new VRWC W65 club record. It was also good to see super masters walker Andrew Jamieson back in action, winning the 20km with 1:48:48. And also congratulations to 14 year old Eliza Clarke who walked her first 10km in a pretty impressive 55:13.

QA SPRING CARNIVAL, SAF, NATHAN, SUNDAY 14 SEPTEMBER

It was a smorgasbord of choice for Queensland walkers with the QRWC walks (see above) in the morning and a QA Spring Carnival in the afternoon. Most of the young walkers contested the 3000m with Mikaela Woodward the only one to test herself over 5000m - and she was rewarded with a big 45 second PB time of 26:56.90. Others to do big PBs included Callum Haig, (PB 0:07), Ben Jeffrey (1;26 PB) and Amelia Schofield (PB 3:28) whose time of 16:44 in the 3000m walk is showing great promise for an athlete of only 11 years of age. Robyn Wales explained further:

Some of the kids then went to a QA meet with mixed results. It had been a big day with a few dq'd but most pleasing were the qualifying times achieved for next year's nationals by Amelia Schofield (11) and Ben Jeffrey (12)! It's great to have a few new faces on the scene. Girls 12 3000 Meter Race Walk Hannigan, Caitlin 12 St Marys Beaudesert DNF Schofield, Isabella 12 St Hildas DQ

CHURCH TO CHURCH WALK, GUERNSEY, SUNDAY 7 SEPTEMBER

A challenge in the local newspaper in September 1936 to walk between the Parish Churches of Guernsey in less than 3 hours 20 minutes was made by Mr Eve D Le Page who claimed to have done it over a course from Town to St Martins, the Forest, St Peters, Upper Parishes and the Lower Parishes. This led to the first walking race for what is now known as the "Church to Church". Nowadays the event is organised by the Sarnia Walking Club (http://sarnia.wordpress.com/) and is still going strong some 78 years later and still contested over the same basic 19.4 mile course.

This year It was a case of been there, done that, as the two winners replicated their wins from 2013 with Jonathan Hobbs of Ashford AC and Angela Martin of Surrey WC winning the 2014 men's and women's Church to Church titles. You can read the race report at http://churchtochurch.wordpress.com/. Results read as follows

USATF WALK CAMPIONSHIP, VALLEY COTTAGE, NY, SUNDAY 14 SEPTEMBER

Christa Mann reported for USA T&F on last Sunday's USATF roadwalk championshipsand associated carnival at Rockland Lake State Park in New York state. It was certainly a pretty big affair with some fine walks by walkers from USA and other countries.

COTTAGE, New York -- With perfect conditions at Rockland Lake State Park for USATF 30 km Race Walk Championships, one athlete set an American record and another earned redemption with the 2014 title. Maria Michta (Long Island, New York) headlined a strong women’s field that also included two-time Olympian Teresa Vaill (Gainesville, Florida) and Susan Randall (Beavercreek, Ohio), a 2013 age group Masters Race Walker of the Year. Michta was crowned champion after her 30 km finish of 2:34:42 set an American record, her third AR of the 2014. Michta set the 20 km record in April before bettering that mark at the Race Walk World Cup in Taicang, , in May. Randall finished second at 30 km Champs with her time of 2:38:51, and Debbie Topham (Mayville, Michigan) of Pegasus A.C. crossed in 3:28:09 for third. Vaille competed well but registered only for the 20 km distance. In the men’s race, Dave Talcott (Oswego, New York) took the men’s overall and the M50 age group titles with his finish of 2:37:52, a 37-second improvement on his runner-up performance last year. Earning the top team award was Shore A.C., featuring Talcott, Bill Vayo (White Plains, New York) and Tom Quattrochii with combined time of 9:35.05. Pegasus A.C. team members Dan O’Brien (Port Huron, Michigan), Leon Jasionowski (East China, Michigan) and Tom Bedford, Jr. were second, combining for 10:37:56.

In other highlights, Colombian walker James Rendon set a Colombian and South American Record in the 50km invitational event (3:47:41), Maria Michta set a new American Record for 25km (2:07:46) and Colombian Eider Arevalo set a new 10km course record (40:11). The large contingent of overseas walkers included those from , Brazil, and Ecuador. See the event facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/USATF30KRacewalk) for discussion and photos.

CITY OF SHEFFIELD AC - JEFF FORD WALKS, SPINKHILL, DERBYSHIRE, SUNDAY 14 SEPTEMBER

Thanks to Mark Wall for the results of Sunday's Jeff Ford walks in Derbyshire. He explained:

This meeting is named for prominent Jeff Ford who passed away some years ago, traditionally held earlier in the season in conjunction with a track meeting. It a picturesque 6 lane track at Mount St. Mary’s College, a Catholic Boarding school. It is a splendid venue used by the British Milers Club as a site of residential camps. Numbers were impacted upon by the fact that few athletes were willing to race, given the race program of two races last week for many and the England Schools Championship to be held in the Northern Midlands in six days’ time. This year races were held entirely on the track. The winner of the senior event, Natalie Myers was returning to the event after a few years away and, at 23 years of age, has strong prospects for the future, teaching commitments notwithstanding.

Saturday 13 September Saturday saw the Open 20km events, held in the early afternoon with a live broadcast on the sports channel of China CCTV5 (90 minutes of live racewalking). The start of the women's race was set for 12:25PM and the male start was set at 12:35PM to suit the live television feed. The day was hot with temperatures above 28C so unfortunately fast times were not really on the cards.

20 km Open Women, Saturday 13 September, 12:25PM A group of the best walker in Ding Huiquin, Xie Lijuan, Sun Huanhuang and Lu Xiuzhi formed from the start and walked together for most of the race, passing the 10km mark in a relatively slow 47:55. The group was finally split in the last few kilometres with Ding Huiquin winning in a modest 1:33:19, ahead of Xie Lijuan (1:33:28) and Sun Huanhuan (1:33:50). First 14 places shown.

20 km Open Men, Saturday 13 September, 12:35PM Even in this race, the early pace was effected by the heat and spectators saw a group of about twenty walkers together up to 10 km with a split around 43:14. Immediately after this point, , Li Tianlei, Yin Jiaxing and Su Guanyu kicked up the pace and the group quickly split. By the end, it was just two with victory going to Li Tianlei (1:24:55) just ahead of Chen Ding (1:24:56) while Su Guanyu took bronze (1:26:36) ahead of Yin Jiaxing (1:26:53). With around 80 walkers in total, it must have been an impressive sight. The early pace was actually made by the junior walkers, with the lead swapping back and forth between Gao Wenkui, who had won the junior 10 km 2 days before, and Liu Jian, who had finished 9 th in the Friday race. Gao lead through the early part of the race with splits of 46:24 (10km), and 1:31:07 (20km) but he surrendered the lead to Liu Jian at the 26km mark and it was Liu who went on to win in a time of 2:16:43 ahead of Wenkui with 2:19:39 and Chen Long with 2:20:39.

That left the 50km walkers on the road with Yu Wei, who won last year's four-day of Wuzhong Taihu and who this year is training in Italy at Saluzzo), well in front. He slowed badly in the final 10km but had a significant lead on those following and struggled home in 4:00:57 (with last 2km splits of 10:20, 11:02 and 11:54!) The last lap of Yu Wei was very tough as he staggered over, shook his head, appeared to stop but was saved by the refreshment table where he emptied 3 bottles of water on his head and ate a slice of watermelon while the public incouraged him. silver went to Zhao Qi (4:02:54) while bronze went to Wu Qianlong (4:03:38).

OUT AND ABOUT

Lots of interesting bits and pieces for us this week.

• The latest edition of Race Walking Record has just been released with all the latest UK news and info for race walkers. Download it from this link: http://racewalkingrecord.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/aug-2014.pdf.

• Well known NSW masters walker Vic Townsend passsed away last week, aged 95. John Smith tells me that he had been sick for a while but he was still coming to Parramatta Park every Friday until only recently. In fact, he had reached the amazing mark of 1000 Friday's in the Park. He will be sadly missed. Vic won gold in the M65 division in the 1987 World Veterans Championships 20km in Melbourne. On that occasion, he won his division by 5 minutes in a time of 2:00:17, very impressive even by modern standards.

• After competing in two and flying the flag for Leitrim at the highest sporting level, Irish international walker Colin Griffin has decided to hang up his spikes. The multiple racewalk champion and former Irish record holder confirmed to the Leitrim Observer that he had walked his final race as he announced his retirement from competitive race walking. See http://jumpingthegun.ie/blog/2014/9/10/no-regrets-as-colin-walks-away.

FANCY A TRIP TO NEW ZEALAND IN MID NOVEMBER

Competition director David Sim sent out the following email recently to alert all walks enthusiasts to what will hopefully be a big carnival in Auckland, New Zealand, in mid November. He explains

Good evening Racewalkers

I am writing to invite you to come and participate in the Athletics New Zealand Long Distance Walks, being held on Saturday 15th November at Ngataringa Bay, Devonport, Auckland. There are Championship and Non-championship events meaning that both A and B grade racewalkers can compete. This is the only ANZ Championship just for racewalkers and this year, like in previous years, there are Championship and Non-Championship events, meaning that A and B grade racewalkers can all compete. These reasons make the LDW the premier racewalking event on the New Zealand calendar and the event that racewalkers, both A and B grade, should be looking to come and compete in. Information about the championships and events can be found on the attached information leaflet.

There are two Start times for the various events (7am for 50km, 9.30am 5km/10km/20km)

A. Open 50km Championship B. Non Championship 50km C. Youth Women 10km D. Youth Men 10km E. Junior Women 10km F. Junior Men 10km G. Senior Women 20km H. Masters Grades I. Children's Non Championships 5km J. Non Championship 10km K. Non Championships 20km

David advises further

• The Non-Championship events (B, I, J and K) will be judged normally, but ‘local rules’ will be used to allow all entrants to finish the full distance • For Championship entries refer to this link to complete your entry http://www.athletics.org.nz/Events/athletics-nz-long- distance-race-walk-championships-236421 • For non-championship entries use this link to complete your entry http://athleticsauckland.co.nz/News/long-distance-non- championship-walks-meet-248474 • If you have general enquires regarding the event please contact: David Sim (Competition Director - [email protected]) • If you have any Non Championship entry enquires please Contact: Anthony Curry (Athletics Auckland - [email protected])

A HUNDRED YEARS AFOOT

I have been sent a flyer for what is sure to be a fantastic racewalking history book, just coming off the presses now and produced by the Race Walking Association (England). It is titled

A HUNDRED YEARS AFOOT A Celebration of a Century of Race Walking

Some tantalising questions to whet the reading appetite:

DO YOU KNOW? • Who walked fifty miles in a prison exercise yard? • Who walked 1000 miles in a music hall, occasionally breaking off to play the piano? • Who walked 3000 miles on a greyhound track, dodging the races? • Did a judge once issue a disqualification from the platform of a bus? • What was the winning time in the A.A.A. 7 miles in 1881? • Who set a world 20 mile record (ratified 51 years later) in a race in which his only opponent retired at 7 miles and the judge went home? • Who advocated dosing an athlete with opium and sulphuric acid? • Why was a national championship deliberately made 35 yards short? • Which woman wore men’s clothes, smoked a pipe and carried a pistol while repeating Captain Barclay’s achievement? • How did licensing laws stimulate race walking? • Which pioneer of the sport might have ended up by being hanged? • Where did three walkers go along three different roads from a common starting point, two of them finishing in a building site?

The answers are all in The Book’s 460 pages, together with 200 illustrations!

I've uploaded the order form to http://www.vrwc.org.au/documents/GeneralOrderForm.pdf. But don't contact me - it is not my book!

BRITISH COMMONWEALTH GAMES WALKS LUNCHEON,

There might not have been any walks in this year's Commonwealth Games but that did not stop the British walking fraternity from hosting a highly successful Commonwealth Games Luncheon at the Tower Hotel in London last Sunday. 1978 Guernsey Commonwealth Games walker Rob Elliot emailed me to say

Great day, did not see any spaces at the meal so assume a 140 person sellout. I reckon at least 35 past Commonwealth Games walkers present. Some I have not seen for around 30 years! From your era of the 1978/82 Games present were Olly Flynn, Brian Adams, Amos Seddon, Roger Mills and Paul Blagg all England, Graham Young, Murray Lambden both Isle of Man and myself. Was great to see my heros from 1978 and the likes of Jake Warhurst and Roy Thorpe from earlier.

CELEBRITY PICS

Ok - the celebrity pics keep coming. I received this one first so it goes into this week's newsletter and it is from VRWC walker Alison Thompson. The photo is of her brother Graeme Nicholls who was the current Australian Junior racewalking champion at the time of the photo (see http://www.vrwc.org.au/tim-archive/articles/wv-graeme-nicholls.pdf for a comprehensive discussion of Graeme's career). Alison explains:

Here is a photo of Graeme with the Duke of Edinburgh which you might like to use in your "Heel & Toe". Graeme was always good when it came to a challenge. He gained the "Queens Scout Award" in Scouting, as well as the Bronze, Silver and Gold "Duke of Edinburgh Awards". Here the Duke of Edinburgh is presenting Graeme with the Gold Award at Government House in Melbourne in 1967 when he was 19 years old. 1967 - Graeme Nichols with HRH Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh

One further record to acknowledge this week - well done Heather!
