Alex Lewsley – Due to retire 31 July 2021. Chair of Corporation & Chair of Estates Strategy & Capital Projects Committee Alex is a commercial property lawyer with over 15 years post-qualified experience. Having previously trained, qualified and worked at City law firm Speechly Bircham LLP (now Charles Russell Speechlys LLP), Alex now works at Kent law firm Thomson Snell & Passmore LLP, based in its Thames Gateway office just outside , where he is a Partner. Alex specialises in commercial property investment, asset management, financing and regeneration transactions, advising investor, lender, owner-occupier or occupier clients who tend to be either located in London and the South East or are located further afield but with business interests in that region.

David Gleed – Chief Executive/Executive Principal David is a qualified chartered accountant who has worked for a number of leading international financial organisations. He joined the College as Principal in 2010, having previously occupied the same role at Bexley College for two years prior to joining North Kent College. He joined Bexley College as Director of Finance in 2001 and then became Deputy Principal in 2003 before becoming Principal in 2008. David was born in Dartford and educated at local schools before gaining an MA in Mathematics from Oxford University.

Keith Norman - Chair of Audit Committee to 31 July 2021 & Chair elect due to take on the role of Chair of Corporation 31st July 2021. Experienced corporate banking professional. Keith had a 37-year career with Lloyds Banking Group until April 2016. Whilst at Lloyds Keith was, for the latest 13 years, the National Sector Specialist for the Higher and Further Education sector, responsible for the Bank’s strategy towards these sectors and £2.5bn of

lending exposure. Keith has proven skills in business management, negotiation and portfolio relationship management. Keith is now a self-employed consultant, assisting universities, independent schools and charities raise debt funding.

Dr Richard Longman - Vice Chair of Corporation – End of term of office as Vice Chair of Corporation July 2021 Richard Longman is Partnership Director for the Greater North Kent Partnership, He is responsible for the Partnership’s policy and strategy development, economic analysis, project delivery and facilitation of collaborative work on a range of topics including growth, transport and skills and engagement with the wider Thames Estuary initiative. He is also Coordinator for the North Kent Enterprise Zone. Richard originally trained as a classical musician and musicologist and has also worked in central Government in a wide range of national and international policy and programme management roles.

Jonathan Gurney – Chair elect Audit Committee as of 1 August 2021 Jonathan is a Corporate Banking manager with over 30 years’ experience in the Retail and Corporate Banking environment. Employed by Svenska Handelsbanken based in Dartford, having previously worked for Barclays Bank for 30 years. He is a Relationship Banker for the SME business sector, providing a full range of funding and general banking services to support local businesses.

Dalia Halpern-Matthews – Member of the Audit Committee Dalia Halpern-Matthews is an astute and innovative community and business leader: dynamic in approach and inspirational in style. Having a proven track-record of achievements in delivering lasting change, her strong leadership focus has enabled Dalia and her teams to build sustainable and consistent organisations despite challenging markets. With extensive and significant experience across sectors, Dalia runs her own consultancy providing services to several organisations across local authorities, private and third sectors in the fields of corporate social responsibility, tackling social isolation, regeneration, innovation, creativity, culture health and wellbeing, property, new routes

around historical roadblocks and governance. Dalia is passionate about building sustainable communities, visual arts, and music.

Teja Birring – Chair Elect Estates Strategy & Capital Projects Committee as of 1 August 2021 Teja Biring is a qualified architect and a partner working for Calford Seaden out of their London office. The projects range from designing private houses, for one off clients, to large residential developments, care homes, offices, warehouses, Embassies and Gurdwaras (Sikh Temples). Currently working on tower blocks, removing flammable cladding, and refurbishing a Grade 2 Embassy.

Maria Chandler – Member of the Audit Committee Maria Chandler joined the Board in December 2020, and is sole in-house legal counsel at The Swatch Group (UK) Limited in its London office advising on the wide range of legal issues that are common to all businesses. She is also experienced in organising sports clubs.

David Martin – Chair of Search, Governance & Remuneration Committee & Lead Safeguarding Governor – Chair Elect due to take on role of Vice Chair of Corporation as of 1 August 2021 Until his recent retirement, David was one of Her Majesty’s Inspectors. He is a veteran of the further education sector, inspectorates and successive inspection cycles. After a successful teaching and senior management career, he was a full-time education and skills inspector for over 20 years, originally with the Further Education Funding Council, from its inception, the Adult Learning Inspectorate and then with Ofsted. He inspected all aspects of general further education and sixth-form colleges, workplace learning and adult and community learning. He has particular expertise in leadership and management, the quality of education and training and in the business and management curriculum. Prior to inspecting, David was a full-time teacher of business and management studies and social sciences in further and higher education for over 24 years, latterly holding leadership roles, including deputy principal. He also held directorships of workplace learning companies. David graduated in the social sciences. He also has post-graduate and professional qualifications in

management, marketing and export and tourism. David was born in Kent. After working in other parts of the country he returned “home” for work and remains there after his recent retirement. He shares a love of food and travel with his wife, who is a longstanding chef-proprietor.

Steve Matthews Steve Matthews is an independent researcher and consultant who works mainly in the fields of learning and skills and social economy. He is also the inward investment agency Locate in Kent’s Skills Specialist, helping companies to make the right connections to the education and skills system. In his freelance activities, he works with FE colleges, universities, adult education providers, cultural and community groups.

Before going freelance in early 2016, Steve was a Director of Emergent Research and Consulting; a Director at Step Ahead Research; a National Sector and Companies Development Manager at Ufi; and Senior Project Executive at Kent Training and Enterprise Council. Steve is from Merseyside originally and has lived in Kent for over 25 years.

Nicholas Smith – Staff Governor Nicholas Smith took up the Staff Governor role for Hadlow/Tonbridge this month. His background is in plumbing, and he has worked in Further Education for 11 years in that field. Nicholas is also Secretary of the West Kent District of The National Education Union, and sits on the Union’s South East Regional Council.

Chris Manley – Staff Governor Chis Manley will take up the Staff Governor for Dartford/ on the 1 February 2021, when Nikki’s terms ends. His background is in Sport, and he has worked at North Kent College for over 15

years supporting a range of teaching and learning projects in that field. Chris also designs online resources for Pearson and Basketball .

Lucy Nicholls – Student Governor Lucy Nicholls is a second year CILEx Level 3 Legal Secretarial student at the Dartford campus.

Charlie Byrnes – Student Governor Charlie Byrnes is a second year Accountancy Level 3 student at the Dartford campus.

Yolanda Hughes – Clerk & Governance Advisor to the Corporation Yolanda joined North Kent College in 2011. She has over 18 years’ experience working in the FE & HE sector as Clerk to the Corporation and is qualified in FE & HE Corporate Governance. Prior to joining North Kent, she worked for Farnborough College of Technology and The Henley College and has most recently worked in a number of interim roles nationally. Her background before joining the FE sector was working with Hampshire Local Education Authority, Governor Services Department contracted to both primary and secondary schools. Yolanda was born and educated in Zimbabwe, Africa.
