I did so because she was, I was given to understand, suffering from a life-threatening illness and proper medical attention was not extended to her. I I was also given to understand that her followers and patrons had deserted her. HP Pavilion AIO 27–q202in 27-inch … Rs. 149,990.00 (details + delivery) Sign in This landed me in a huge embarrassment. Pragya accused me of being in collusion with the UPA government, in particular with the then home minister, P Chidambaram. I was alleged to have mounted pressure on her on behalf of the ruling dispensation. This surprised and saddened me. I met her in the ofce of the jail superintendent who, as also a few others, were present throughout our conversation. Mine was a humanitarian initiative. I don’t regret extending a hand of support and solidarity to Pragya at that time, irrespective of how she embarrassed me for it. The nature of a humanitarian act does not change because it evoked ingratitude and callousness. I would visit her again, if she nds herself in similar circumstances. But that does not mean that I would be too sentimental to disapprove of her pretensions and falsehoods. I am free to be silent about my personal embarrassment, but not so when a true martyr — Hemant Karkare — is vilied and demonised.

UNDERSTANDING THE RELIGIOUS NATURE OF TERRORISM IN INDIA: FOUR CASE STUDIES WITH AN ANALYSIS FOR PROPOSALS AND RESOLUTION BY KAILASH KUMAR CHATRY A thesis submitted to the University of Birmingham for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Department of Theology and Religion School of Historical Studies College of Arts and Law University of Birmingham 17 October 2012. ABSTRACT India has faced the challenge of religious terrorism for almost three decades. This phenomenon – in-spite of the Indian government’s comprehensive effort to contain it – has been spreading its vicious influence and expanding its support base among the conflicting religious communities in many parts of the country. The existing views, in regard to the rise of religious terrorism, suggest that economic, socio-political or geo-political issues (that cropped up during the post-partition period) are responsible for the birth of the problem. However, so far no study is done collectively on the four (Sikh, Kashmiri Muslim, Hindu and Naga Christian) religious communities to explain the cause of the problem.

  • The Rise of Hindutva, Saffron Terrorism and South Asian Regional Security
JSSA, Vol. V, No. 1 Dr. Khuram Iqbal The Rise of Hindutva, Saffron Terrorism and South Asian Regional Security Dr. Khuram Iqbal1 Abstract Regardless of increasing number of organized violent attacks by far right, non-Islamist militants across the globe, Western policy and scholarly discourse on terrorism remains excessively focused on violent extremism in Muslims. South Asia is no exception. The regional security agenda is often constructed by disproportionately highlighting Islamist extremism. On the contrary, Saffron terrorism in India is conveniently ignored. Nevertheless, the second political triumph of Bharatya Janata Party (BJP) under Modi, the political face of Hindu fundamentalists in India is barefaced. This paper seeks to offer an alternative perspective by focusing on the rising threat of Hindu extremists and how their ascendance to and consolidation of political power in New Delhi will impact South Asian regional security. Using adversarial threat analysis framework, the paper first establishes Hindutva terror as a potent threat, challenging the apologists’ notions that tend to downplay this new wave of violence by terming it as “acts conducted by isolated fringe elements”. The paper also highlights growing acknowledgement of the threat among academia 1Dr. Khuram Iqbal is an Assistant Professor at Department of International Relations (IR), NDU. 43 JSSA, Vol. V, No. 1 Dr. Khuram Iqbal but reluctance of policy makers in and around India to acknowledge Hindutva as a threat, which could further complicate the regional political environment. Since anti-Pakistanism is central to Hindutva ideology, there is a need for Islamabad to adopt counter-measures and sensitize the world about the growing role of Hindu fundamentalists in Indian policy-making process.
