Member of the Saskatoon Real Estate Association 4 • MONDAY, OCTOBER 5, 2009Editorial and Opinion THE WATROUS MANITOU Just Layzing Around The end came about with a whimper, not a bang, but it came nonetheless. The Watrous/ Manitou Beach & District Chamber of Commerce tried to muster one last gasp Monday, Oct. 26, but the will was not there to carry on. A devoted, overworked and underappreciated core group of executive members were look- ing for someone to step into the president’s chair. A vice-chair would also have been appreci- ated, and the roles of treasurer and secretary were already fi lled. It was unclear how many directors would have remained on board, but what was very apparent was that no one was willing to carry on without addi- tional support - not just fi nancial but also physical - from the rest of the chamber. In the fi scal 2008 year, there were between 61 and 65 paid mem- bers from Watrous and Manitou Beach. Each membership repre- sented a business, which in turn could have encompassed any- where from one to 75 owners, managers and employees (that last number just being used as an example). Thus, the potential turnout for any given meeting or event could have totalled between 61 and 300 (again, that last number being an example based on an average of fi ve representatives from each business). Instead, most meetings and many functions were organized and run by the same dedicated core group of four to six individuals, with the odd turnout getting as high as nine or 10. And from these people came the ideas and work behind such events as a Christmas shopping promotion, tree-lighting event and Santa photos; several business luncheons featuring guest speakers such as Lynda Haver- Apparently his truck came with some kind of heavy duty cloth on the seats and when stock; an agricultural appreciation meeting and supper; a greatly- he tried sliding out from behind the wheel wearing corduroy pants a high degree of heat resulted expanded Citizen of the Year/business recognition banquet and –– that’s why he’s holdin’ that ice pack on his butt. . . ” awards; a business trade show, and the centennial parade. On top of that, membership dues also paid for the Halloween candy giveaway, major sponsorship of the Fun Run Show and Shine car event in July, and a high school scholarship. Undoubtedly, Not your grandparents’ Monopoly treasurer Ray Hall could come up with a further list of donations, sponsorships and funds allotted, but the point is hopefully made. THE POINT How fast has this year

AFTER gone by? Can you believe it is October already? Regardless of whether or not time has fl own by for you, to me it feels like July just ended. But, enough of the time travel: it’s time for some sports stuff. Judo is under- way in Watrous and has been since Sept. 21. I am told by Glen Miller that practices run Monday and Thursdays and I will have more on Ju-No-Ri for next week’s Watrous Manitou. The WHS football team pulled out a big-time win against Raymore to go 2-2 and played Caronport last Thursday in their fi rst of three away games to fi nish up the regular season. A lot of miles will be logged on the highways as they rolled into Caronport, go to Southey this Thursday and then Central Butte Oct. 16 to fi nish Hitting their mark the season. Mickelson who fi nished second overall didn’t go home empty handed and got a $3 million cheque. Maybe it is time for me to take up golf more seriously. On second thought, I think I will just stick to the competitions I have here against my brothers, but $3 million dollars for second - wow, that is an incredible amount of money. Now, from hitting a ball with a club to hitting one with a bat. It was a pretty intense week in the majors with one particular series as Minnesota and Detroit battled it out for tops in the American League central division. The two clubs split a double-header earlier in the week to keep Detroit up by a pair of games. They played another two games against each other and for fans it must have felt like a mini-playoff series. Even though I don’t watch a lot of baseball I have to admit Twins’ catcher Joe Mauer made a pretty nice catch behind home plate. He went tracking a foul ball that went into the crowd and bounced off a few hands before landing in his mitt. The Twins were thrilled about the out but some Tigers fans were disappointed about not getting a souvenir. And fi nally, hooking into something I have done over the years, fi shing. It is considered a sport; however, depending on who you talk to in my family, it could also be considered an educational course. When my Dad, Uncle Rick and I head out to one of our favourite spots, the two of us try to ‘teach’ my dad how to fi sh. However, because it is my Dad’s birthday this week, I will be nice and acknowledge that the last time we did venture out, I was the one taking lessons from the ‘old guide’.
