THE SEEING EYE ANNUAL REPORT 2019 03 LETTER FROM THE OFFICERS OF THE SEEING EYE Dear Friends: One of the most colorful achievements of 2019 was the addition to our Washington Valley campus of a mural, telling the story of Seeing Eye dogs… from puppies to partners! The mural covers the walls, and even the doors, of the visitor’s entrance to the Main House, which houses our student dormitory and dining hall, as well as administrative offices. Each year, more than 2,000 people use this entrance to learn about our mission and to meet our amazing dogs. In addition, The Seeing Eye is a polling place for area residents, and they too use this entrance. It’s a wonderful way to tell our story to our many visitors. The mural was designed by artist Caren Frost Olmsted with the help of Seeing Eye archivist R. Bruce Johnson, and then painted by staff, trustees, volunteers, and graduates, as well as students from a local middle school. Each portion of the section was marked off with tape, so people who are blind could also participate in painting by feeling the outlines of each image. We also created a video, so those who can’t see the mural – or can’t make it to campus – can still experience it. More about the mural and the video can be found at www.SeeingEye.org/mural. A highlight of the mural is an image of a young graduate kneeling to hug her yellow Labrador/golden retriever cross. It really captures the bond between graduate and dog. Thanks to your generous support, we created more than 250 new teams in 2019, and every one of them is a unique partnership. Our graduates leave here not only with enhanced confidence and independence, but a lovable companion. “My dog has given me so much,” one graduate recently said, “and all he asks in return is a belly rub.” Thank you for making it possible! E-Newsletter | October 2011 Celebrating Women and Making History 2011 National Women's Hall of Fame Induction Weekend in Seneca Falls, New York On October 1, 2011, the National Women's Hall of Fame inducted eleven women into the Hall at its home in downtown Seneca Falls, New York - the "Birthplace of Women's Rights." Each year the Hall inducts both historical women and present day women who are role models who have made, or continue to make a difference in all of our lives. This year's inductees were: St. Katharine Drexel, Dorothy Harrison Eustis, Dr. Loretta C. Ford, Abby Kelley Foster, Helen Murray Free, Billie Holiday, Coretta Scott King, Lilly Ledbetter, Senator Barbara A. Mikulski, Dr. Donna E. Shalala, and Kathrine Switzer. Congratulations to all 2011 NWHF Inductees! As part of the induction weekend festivities, the cast of Mosaic and their parents traveled from Colorado to Seneca Falls to present the fabulous play Mosaic: Voices of Women's Suffrage. Written by three students in the summer of 2010 (Jessica Miller, Liesl Jensen and Nicole Polglaze) and produced by Jen Myronuk, Executive Director of Her Story Media, Mosaic showcases the vibrant life stories of three American suffragists -Julia Ward Howe, Caroline Churchill and Alice Paul - in their own words. Through historic portrayal in period costumes, the play features monologues and speeches in conversation over tea as each suffragist shares her own unique life perspective of the events from 1848 until 1920, when the 19th Amendment passed granting U.S.

  • Broadway Theater Map
Broadway Theater Map Times Square & Broadway Restaurants (not mapped – easy to find) • Restaurant Row (46th St, 8th/9th Aves) - home to 30 restaurants on one block, some a bit touristy, but all geared for the Broadway theatre crowd, serving prix- fixe specials and well-aware you have an 8pm show to get to. Recommended: Sushi of Gari 46, Becco & Barbetta (authentic Italian, 100+ years old). • Saki Bar Hagi 46 (358 W 46th St) - Japanese eatery & sake bar offering yakitori, noodles, sushi and much more. Open very late. I love this place! • Becco (355 W 46th, 8th Ave) - Italian, prix-fixe menus, all you can eat pasta and owned by Lidia Bastianich, a local favorite chef. • Carmine's (200 W 44th @ 7th Ave) - family-style Italian and their second restaurant (original on the Upper West Side). Widely popular with the theater crowd, tourists and a great family-friendly stop in Times Square. • Junior's - They have everything (burger, deli, breakfast, dessert), but are likely the most famous NY Cheesecake in the world. 2 locations in Times Square - 45th & 49th. • Sardi’s (234 W 44th, 7th & 8th) - an iconic Broadway institution for years, great for pre- and post- theater meals, a local Broadway star hangout. The menu is kind of random. Maybe upscale continental? Open on Thanksgiving. • Joe Allen - similar to Sardi's in that it is a popular Broadway hangout (stars, producers), but a casual tavern. Orso is their Italian sister restaurant. • Meske (Meskerem) (468 W 47th, 10th Ave) - Ethiopian, inexpensive & interesting. If you've never eaten using spongy bread to pick up your food (no utensils), it's fun and a must-try.
