AMY BENNETT speaks to James Kelly of Linacre House Stud about his draft at today’s Tattersalls Ascot September Yearling Sale.

inacre House Stud may be a name more commonly seen on the consignor list at foal sales, but when James and Lisa LKelly’s operation does consign yearlings, the record shows it is well worth paying attention. At the Tattersalls Ascot September Yearling Sale in 2018, the couple offered a daughter of Outstrip out of the Verglas mare Celsius Degree, who was purchased by Stratford Place Stud for £10,000, as well as a Hot Streak filly out of the Marju mare Qatar Lot 116, a February-foaled Gutaifan half-sister to the Listed Princess. The latter failed to find a buyer in the ring but was taken winner and Gr.3-placed Flaming Princess (Hot Streak). on by Danny Benson in partnership with the Kellys to be offered at the Tattersalls Ascot Breeze-Up Sale the following year, where she was snapped up by the Cool Silk Partnership for £60,000. “Her half-sister was measured by the vet the other day and is Fast forward 12 months and both those fillies were Stakes 153.5cm so she is nearly a full hand bigger than Flaming Princess winners, with Flippa The Strippa (Outstrip) having landed the was on the same day in her yearling year. Her sire Gutaifan is tipping Listed National Stakes at Sandown in the colours of Chris Wright, away as well. I am a big believer in statistics and if you look at the list while Flaming Princess (Hot Streak) won the Listed Prix of leading second crop sires, Gutaifan is second only to Night Of Cavalassur at Deauville for the Cool Silk Partnership and went on Thunder by number of winners; he is a winner machine and of to finish third in the Gr.3 Prix d’Arenberg on her next start. course has three black-type two-year-olds this year, including the The Co. Kildare stud did not offer a draft at last year’s renewal of recent Gr.2 winner Fev Rover. the Ascot Yearling Sale but is back this year with a draft of three, “As a small breeder like we are, it is so important to use a including a Gutaifan half-sister to Flaming Princess, as well as a that can get you a winner, so you are giving your mare the best colt by Outstrip and a colt by first crop sire Cotai Glory. possible start at stud.” Two years ago, James Kelly was convinced he was taking The dam of Flaming Princess and her Gutaifan half-sister, something special to market in Qatar Princess’s filly and her who is catalogued as Lot 116, was placed several times over 5f. younger half-sister once again has the consignor eagerly She was purchased on behalf of Kelly for 100,000gns at the anticipating this week’s sale. Tattersalls December Mares Sale in 2016, to become one of the Recalling his certainty that Flaming Princess was something mares owned by the stud in partnership. special, even at the yearling stage, Kelly says: “We contacted lots of These investment partnerships were launched in 2015 by the trainers pre-sale and offered to keep 50 per cent and give the Kellys, who sources mares at public auction or privately and retain purchaser back half the money if she didn’t get black type. Everyone 60 per cent themselves, with the remaining 40 per cent taken on thought she was too small, as she measured 142.5cm going to the by investors, split between one 20 per cent share, one ten per sale. We were convinced that she was a pocket rocket but everyone cent share and two five per cent shares. The mares are then who came to look at her said ‘no way, she’s just too small’. But she covered each year and the resulting progeny sold, usually as foals, was pretty damn quick! while the mare herself is sold on at the end of a five-year period,

Such is the popularity of the investment partnerships that the Kellys currently have around 12-14 mares currently in partnerships and are always on the lookout for more. Spotlight ~ CONTINUED Qatar Princess is a prime example of the investment partnership at work. Having been purchased for 100,000gns, she was sold at the Goffs November Breeding Stock Sale for €330,000 to David and Diane Nagle. “Qatar Princess is the best-looking mare we’ve ever had, absolutely stunning,” Kelly says. “Her half-sister Monya is by Dark Angel and she made 425,000gns as a yearling. Dark Angel was priced too high for me, so the next best thing is Gutaifan. We were hoping to get a filly and she is absolutely outstanding. In my opinion she is as nice a filly as we have ever brought to a sale. If she had what agents deem a ‘sexier sire’, she would be a select sale filly. In terms of a physical, I’d give her a nine out of ten; movement, she is extraordinary, temperament she is incredible, so if she doesn’t make what we want her to make, we will be happy to take her home and race her.” As well as the Gutaifan filly, Linacre House Stud consigns Lot 243, a colt by the speedy Tally-Ho Stud stallion Cotai Glory, who is out of another partnership mare in Curry (Acclamation), a twice-raced half-sister to last year’s Gr.2 Prix de la Nonette heroine First into the ring for Linacre House Stud is Lot 20, an Terebellum (Sea The Stars), who went on to win the Gr.2 Dahlia Outstrip colt and the first foal out of a half-sister to Stakes this year, before being beaten just a head in the Gr.1 Queen the Gr.3 winner Spectre, who was placed in both Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot and finishing third in the Gr.1 Falmouth the Gr.1 Prix du Moulin and the Gr.1 Prix Jean Prat. Stakes. “He is a really sharp horse”, Kelly says of the April-born colt. “He is a ball of muscle and he has unbelievable action on the lunge. He is not a monster, but he strikes me as being a horse who’ll give his new owner plenty of action next April and May. “We sold his Showcasing half-sister as a yearling to Ontoawinner The third yearling in the draft is also the first into the ring, Lot and she is in training with Adrian Keatley. We thought she was a very 20, a son of Outstrip out of the twice-placed Fortuities (Soldier sharp filly but when I spoke to them a couple of weeks ago, they said Of Fortune), a half-sister to the Gr.3 Prix winner they like her a lot but in the last month she had grown enormously, Spectre (Siyouni), who was placed in both the Gr.1 Prix du so they had backed off her and she could be an end of season two- Moulin and Gr.1 Prix Jean Prat, and hails from a high-class German year-old.” family. “This is a family I really like; Spectre was a very good mare and Mambo Nights (Havana Gold) is now rated 102 and has won three times this year. This is a horse who is going to take a little bit of time, he’s a big boy, but we love his attitude and he strikes me as probably a 7f-1m horse for September-October next year”, Kelly says. Having run Castlemartin Stud for the O’Reillys for 20 years, Kelly has seen top-class Stakes winners of all shapes and sizes, both in his role as stud manager and also from his own successful breeding endeavours, which has honed his eye for a talented bargain. “Primarily when we’re buying, I focus on pedigree. It doesn’t bother me if a mare is unraced, or raced and low-rated. What matters to me is the mare’s pedigree; she must be out of a black-type mare or a half- sister to a black-type mare and then we’ll buy her,” he explains. “We’ve been exceptionally lucky buying non-winning mares. One of the first mares we bought was called Spinamix – she was rated 62 and bred five Stakes winners for us, and she cost 10,000gns in foal to Dansili,” he continues. “The Gr.1 winners we had were not our best producers. The best producers were the sisters of those mares, who Lot 243 is a son of first crop sire Cotai Glory, out of a had not performed as well on the racecourse themselves.” half-sister to the dual Gr.2 winner and Gr.1 Queen Anne As well as enjoying plenty of success as breeders of Stakes Stakes and Gr.1 -placed Terebellum horses, the Kellys have introduced a growing number of non- (Sea The Stars). industry people to the breeding game via their investment partnerships.

ADVANCE PINHOOK TABLES Pinhook Tables carried within EBN are available for FREE on our website. www.bloodstocknews.eu/pinhooking/ ~ CONTINUED EBN #AheadOfTheGame Spotlight “The idea was generated in a regional airport in Deauville six or seven years ago,” Kelly explains. “Our first partnership was called ‘Some partners leave footprints in your heart’ and that partnership has been going since then. We don’t charge management fees, there are no hidden costs and we encourage people to get involved and send ideas. Anyone can be involved with horses on a financial level; however, we can encourage active participation with our investors, as, when people become involved emotionally, they are more likely to stay in the business long term. “We don’t have unlimited funds and so with co-investors our funds can stretch a little bit further at the sales. We stick rigidly to our valuations and we spend in the ring as if it was 100 per cent our money. “We’re not here to make a quick buck. We make it very clear to people as they come in that they have to treat it like a pension. Yes, they’ll have their bumper days and yes there might be the odd bad day, but if you stay in for the long haul, with a five-year investment, if we do things half right, people are not going to lose money and there is a strong chance they’ll make money. There’s a better chance of making money with us than leaving money in the bank,” he adds. “We try to produce horses for the racecourse, but we have to be commercially minded to survive. We’ve been very lucky at the Ascot James and Lisa Kelly, with their children Lucy and Jack. sale and fingers crossed, if we can produce another Stakes horse out of the three we sell this week, we’ll be very happy.”
