7 When Everything Changes — Vicenç Villatoro, Director of the CCCB

The programming at the CCCB is structured each year around various pre- established core themes that organise and link the events and activities, more in the manner of a skeleton than a shell. Consequently, we want these core themes to have a certain lifespan, to extend over a number of seasons. However, the programme also acquires – partly by virtue of planning and partly spontaneously – a certain family unity, what we might call a transverse core that is closely linked to time itself, which gives it cohesion and intention within its consciously chosen variety and plurality. For some time, it has seemed to us that an essential idea for explaining the present is the notion of change: times of change and the accelerating pace of change. This is the family tie that connected the bulk of the programming of the CCCB in 2017. And if change is one of the most evident characteristics of the present, there is one change that to a certain extent encapsulates them all: what we often call climate change or the climate crisis, global warming or the depletion of fossil fuels. For a few years now, the teams at the CCCB have been envisaging ways that the sphere of culture could, through its specific languages, reflect on this major change, which is certainly the end of one world and which needs to be the beginning of another, and on the reasons why such a profound transformation has not come to occupy a place among the most pressing and priority concerns of humankind as a whole at the present. The fundamental ideas underpinning this preparatory work were that what we call climate change is in fact also a cultural, political, economic, social and even an ethical change; that the decisions on the future – a future that is relatively close at hand – have to be made in the present, in part by people who will not live to see the full consequences of those choices; and that climate change alters humankind’s relationship with the planet and with the other species that live on it. With these pre-established ideas as the starting point, the concept of climate change was one of the cruxes of the CCCB’s entire programme in 2017, touching on each of its areas of activity in one way or another. It was the subject of the exhibition in the Beta series – a series that focuses on the intersections between science and the humanities, Third Culture – entitled “After the End of the World”. It made a major impact on the 2017 edition of the Kosmopolis festival of expanded literature, with its slogan of “When everything changes”, which generated enormously positive results. And it 8

was a notable feature in the programming of debates and audiovisuals. This extensive programme on climate change also formed the basis for initiatives outside the CCCB, such as the City Station in Poblenou in Barcelona, and similar actions in other towns and cities in Catalonia. This year’s Cultural Innovation International Prize, the second to be held, was also devoted to projects related to the climate crisis and attracted numerous qualitatively impressive international submissions, among them The Newton Machine, the prizewinning project, which has joined the programme as a parallel initiative alongside many other activities, overall a very satisfying outcome for the CCCB. Reflection on climate change also formed the core theme of the ICREA debates this year, and it is expected that the subject will remain a focus of attention in the programming for 2018 and especially in the Barcelona Debate. In other words, this is not a theme that the CCCB views as having run its course in the programme for 2017. Rather, we believe that it needs to be included on a constant basis in the centre’s future programming. It is here to stay.

—Changes in habits Change is central to the description and understanding of the present. This centrality encompasses not only the issues that are considered but also the ways they are discussed. We very often associate the idea of change in the formats of cultural creation and dissemination with technological transformations, with the embracing of new technologies. But this is not always the case. The exhibition “Photobook Phenomenon”, considered one of the most comprehensive ever mounted in any space on this format, grew out of a remarkable fact: it is widely stated by people working in the world of photography that the book is the future of creative photography; that the book is the best vehicle for photography, as it is the most varied and open means of presentation and is aimed at audiences of every kind. The book – an artefact for which the bell has often been tolled, prematurely, on the grounds that it will be rendered obsolete by the new communication technologies – is seen as the most suitable outlet for photography, a form of artistic expression that is central to contemporary times. At the other end of the technological spectrum, in 2017 the CCCB hosted the “Björk Digital” exhibition, an immersive virtual reality experience based on the music of this artist from Iceland. A combination of performance, video, film, installation art, music and virtual reality, as well as interaction possibilities, it provided a wealth of insights into Björk’s work. At the same time, it demonstrated the narrative and exhibition possibilities of virtual reality, thereby, in a certain sense, ushering in a new genre, a new format which, though not quite an exhibition in the traditional sense of the word, isn’t quite a projection or illustration of music in images either. For many visitors, “Björk Digital” was a kind of initiation into a different display and narrative form that presents almost infinite possibilities for all kinds of themes and which offers an extraordinary array of creative resources. The exploration of new formats through experimentation has always been one of the goals of the initiatives and festivals grouped together under the Audiovisual Galaxy themed area. The fact that the Xcèntric programme celebrated its 15th anniversary in 2017 provided an opportunity to evaluate this period as a whole and to publish a collection of works by 15 essential authors, a selection of those who have appeared in the various editions. 11

—The irruption of the present It is impossible to draw up a report on 2017 at the CCCB without making special mention of what we might call the dramatic irruption of the present into the space itself. We could say that this always happens: the effects of the climate crisis are already visible wherever we look, in both the strict observation of the climate and the human realities that it has changed. The debate on the city – a constant at the CCCB – which today revolves around thinking on the appropriateness of tourism and on its management, is not confined to the centre, which is not a pure observatory but a playing field, a space that is involved. The CCCB is not an aseptic laboratory in which a microscope is used to examine reflections on sustainability, on the role of culture in social transformation, on artistic narratives in the contemporary world, on the ways of displaying and narrating. Rather, such reflections penetrate its daily operations. The refugee issue is part of the human landscape of the city and of the neighbour- hood in which the CCCB acts and in which it wants to be perfectly immersed. The Mediterranean, that sea that has become a barrier and a graveyard, is very close indeed: it can be seen from the Mirador at the top of the CCCB. While this may always be true, it has been even more visibly and dramatically the case in 2017. The terrorist attack in Au- gust on La Rambla in Barcelona took place, obviously, very close to the CCCB, which provided shelter for people fleeing the aftermath. In the intense political life of Catalonia in the second half of the year, the CCCB was a polling station during the referendum of 1 October and in the elections in December. To a certain extent, the major events of the most imme- diate present – the events mentioned in this and the paragraph above – have also happened to the CCCB, not centrally, perhaps, but certainly not laterally either, as they have had an impact within its walls. In an institution whose mission is to understand and explain the present, these irruptions have demanded a consideration and a cultural response, which cannot be the rapid and indispensable assessment of the media, but which cannot be a purely academic analysis either. This dense and unpredictable (or relatively unforeseeable) present has shaped the programme and altered the gaze of the CCCB as much as ever and perhaps even a little more in 2017, doing so in an immediate manner whenever possible or by means of its incorporation into the programming for the following year in some instances. In this respect, the season programmed for the month of October on the concept of revolution in the 21st century – “Re- volution or Resistance” – provided an opportunity to ponder on the hot topics of the time thanks to in-depth lectures given by eminent figures. The public response to these talks was outstanding. In addition, the Ageing Democracies project, or- ganised in partnership with the Open Society Initiative for Europe, made it possible to engage – through diverse languages of art and theory – in in-depth debates on democracy in European countries, challenging various stereotypes concerning the generational distribution of political and ideological stances. The Old Europe, New Utopias season, organised as part of the Barcelona Debate, brought together people with different views on the European project in a year when the political and economic circumstances focused attention on the foundations of the and its ability to respond to the emerging phenomena of new politics. In addition, the annual edition of World Press Photo, brought forward this year, offered the opportunity to see how photojournalism conveys the physical image of these explosions of the present right to the very doors and walls of the CCCB.

—The public response Lastly, it is the CCCB’s ability to connect with its various audiences and to satisfy their interests and meet their expectations that gives meaning to its programming. In this sense, 2017 was a good year, one that came after an extraordinary year. Whereas in 2016, the number of participants who attended in person the activities organised by the CCCB – not the only important indicator but certainly the most visible – stood at around 450,000, the highest figure ever in the centre’s history – in 2017 it went back to around 380,000, a number similar to that of two years ago, thereby demonstrating a tendency to stabilise above the annual average for the last decade. This cannot, of course, be regarded as an entirely satisfactory figure, but nor is it worrying. As well as being quite high in a year in which some spaces were closed for maintenance works, the fall in comparison with the previous year is not attributable to structural problems or a decline in the CCCB’s prestige or its high standing with the public. On the contrary: in 2017 the CCCB was declared the top cultural institution in Catalonia, as rated by specialists in a ranking of cultural institutions by the Culture Observatory of the Contemporánea Foundation. 12

Contrasting with the figures on personal visits, 2017 was a very positive year as regards the data on access to cultural con- tent produced at the CCCB but consumed elsewhere, either through touring exhibitions or via the internet. Almost 200,000 people visited exhibitions or seasons produced by the centre and mounted in other spaces, with seven projects travelling to 16 venues around the world, from MIT in the to Singapore, , Cordoba, Prague, Washington and Brussels, as well as a number of towns and cities across Catalonia. Online access to the CCCB’s digital content grew overall by around 17%, with the most notable increase in the number of hours spent using material on the Web, marking a shift from usage essentially to check events and times to increasing interest in following full content. To evaluate the CCCB’s audiences, we, like so many other cultural institutions, will gradually have to add physical and online participants, since they all access the contents presented. For the CCCB, 2017 was a time of reflection on the idea of change, and we can say that the changes were analysed, pre- sented and experienced. And this was done in the company of a large number of people who wanted to share the content and who positively rated the initiatives they participated in. All of this in the context of budgetary stability and continuity, of good institutional collaboration, of active participation in many of the networks and fabrics that make up the cultural and civic life of the neighbourhood, the city and the country. And with an eagerness to be an antenna that receives the signals of what is happening around the world and which is also capable of broadcasting to the rest of the world. 15

Practical placements at the CCCB The CCCB has an agreement with the Casal dels Infants association in El Raval which offers practical placements in the CCCB’s Maintenance Service, in the framework of the Initial Professional Qualification Programmes (PQPI). If pupils complete their placement satisfactorily, they have the possibility of receiving a scholarship exclusively for course fees and school material, with the aim of being able to continue formal training and have first work experience. Since 2014, we have had as many pupils in practical placement as pupils receiving the scholarship for collaboration with the Maintenance Service. The aim is that the pupil who carries out the placement should be the candidate for the scholarship.

Culturnautes scholarships Culturnautes took place from 26 June to 21 July. The CCCB’s summer day camp for children is a space to encourage each participant’s capacity to explore, discover and stimulate curiosity. This inclusive activity reflects the CCCB’s responsibility to offer a space where all children have access to training by means of cultural experience. Obra Social “la Caixa” awarded 29 grants to enable children and young people in El Raval to enjoy this activity, recognised by Barcelona City Council.

Micro-donations The CCCB team has a micro-donation project of 1€ a month to raise money for social causes. In this sixth year, the money went to the association Amics de la Gent Gran. 44 Audience

Visitors’ opinions

In 2017, systematic customer satisfaction surveys were conducted. The exhibition “Photobook Phenomenon” collected a wide variety of comments. Below is a selection: “Everything. The exhibition set-up. The subjects. The way the books and images were displayed.”

“Transmitting history and culture through images is fantastic and more didactic! I loved it.”

“It made me think how an image can say much more than words.”

“The end of the exhibition. The part where you can look at the books.”

Visitors to the immersive experience “Björk Digital” said:

“What I most like is the idea of bringing together the public with virtual reality and Björk.”

“The way Björk uses technology and music to express herself.”

“The originality and the possibility of discovering different possible experiences with virtual reality.”

“I can’t put it into words.”

In the first two months, the exhibition “After the End of the World” has attracted the following comments:

“It makes you think that technological advances are insignificant next to human blindness. We can’t see further than our own noses. The future is just money in the short-term.”

“It makes us think about our imprint on the world as active beings.”

“A new reflection on us and everything that surrounds us.”

“What I liked best is that it makes people think how important it is to prevent global warming.”

“The focus on the dilemma and the challenge facing humankind.”

“I like the way it talks about our past, present and future. Not just saying ‘Stop burning fossil fuels’, but explaining why.”

“The exhibition not only questions the economic and human activities that have brought us to this historical point, it also offers solutions. It doesn’t rely on fearmongering to scare spectators.” 46
