Development of Kumasi Airport – Phase II Detail Design - Airfield, Building & External Works
The Task
The Government of the Republic of Ghana intends to rehabilitate Kumasi Airports to facilitate safe and comfortable air travel to and from the airport.
Kumasi Airport is located in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. The current airport comprises an old terminal building, runway (45m wide and 2,441m in length), apron, taxiway, fire station, meteorological and navigational equipment. Contracta Construction UK LTD was appointed as contractor and appointed Nurizon for the design works.
Design Services
Nurizon’ s appointment was for both the Airfield and Airport Building & External works.
Scope of works on the project included: • Airfield Works o Extension of existing runway and taxi link pavement from 1981m to 2320m. o Construction of new apron and link taxiway for proposed civilian terminal building. o Aeronautical ground lighting (AGL) equipment design and specification. • Building & External Works o Terminal Building Construction including new building - floor Area 6,040m² accommodating 800,000 passenger per year, electronic, electrical and communication, mechanical and all bulk and internal services o Perimeter Security Fence o Access roads and car parks o Substation and upgrade to the power system o Fire protection and water storage o Bulk utilities

Scope of services included:
• Geotechnical Investigations of the current and proposed extended site for the Airport. • Inception designs in terms of the Airfield as well as the Airport Building & External Works. • Preliminary design on both the Airfield and the Airport Building & External Works, including drawings, Quantities (BoQ) and preliminary design report. • Detailed design for both the Airfield and the Airport Building & External Works, including technical specification, construction drawings, final quantities (BoQ) and final design report.
The Result
A challenging project, in terms of available capex funding, logistical issues, tight deadlines and extremely cold weather experienced during the surfacing operations. Despite some setbacks due to workmanship issues, the facility opened in time to accommodate the new intake of flight students, with snag items addressed during student ground school times and on the weekends.
