Read Ebook {PDF EPUB} Daredevil Vol. 7 Hardcore by Brian Michael Bendis 'Dancer' delivers intrigue. This week is an excellent opportunity to show those newly interested in comic books (perhaps due to a certain $1 billion grossing movie) that comics aren't just about superheroes. The best example of what's possible without a man in tights is this week's first issue of "Dancer," from Image Comics. This series is not just your usual "retired assassin chased by sniper" story. In this case, the assassin's ballerina companion is a major part of the ultra-violent action in Milan, Italy. Daniel Dean of Titan Games and Comics in Smyrna, Georgia said this title caught his interest because it is written by Nathan Edmondson, most recently known as the writer of DC's "New 52" series, "Grifter." “More importantly to me, and people in the store, he produced ‘Who is Jake Ellis?’" said Dean. "Really, really great stuff.” Dean also compared the series to the series of "Bourne" novels and movies. “It reminds me of some of the stuff Vertigo would put out in a ‘Scalped’ vein," he said. This comic is a good choice for new readers, additionally, since it is a limited mini-series and therefore does not involve any long-term commitment on the readers' part, Dean said. The seventh volume of Bendis's Daredevil series brings his central story to a close, while opening up new possibilities for the future. Daredevil is dealing with the public revelation of his identity as blind attorney Matt Murdock when his greatest enemy, the Kingpin, returns from the grave to rule over New York City again. With him, he brings two of the hero's greatest enemies, the unstable Typhoid Mary and the crazed Bullseye. But this time, Daredevil decides to end these conflicts once and for all. Bendis writes this series as though it is a film; the Kingpin's return and rise to power are straight out of a movie like Scarface: bloody, glib and dramatic all at once. His pacing is superb, as the Kingpin and Daredevil run parallel courses, building tension until they finally collide and battle through an entire issue at the book's conclusion. If Bendis is writing a film, then artist Maleev is drawing one - each panel is like a still from a movie on paper. When this works, as in the kinetic fight scenes, it's thrilling and grandiose, but it's less effective for tender moments, such as the romantic subplot involving Matt Murdock and a new girlfriend who's also blind. Hardcore is engrossing and broad enough in theme and character to absorb fans of Daredevil's adventures from both the silver screen and the comic books. Only one person stands in his way: Daredevil! As much as I want Brian Bendis/Alex Maleev’s Daredevil series to be as awesome as it was a couple books ago, Volume 7: Hardcore proves to be a fairly middling effort, like most of the other volumes. Matt individually fights Typhoid Mary, Bullseye and Kingpin like he’s done numerous times before. Each fight becomes increasingly intense but it still feels like Matt going through the motions – he’s fought these characters too many times at this point for it to not seem rote. His romance with Milla remains uninteresting and the Feds/Mutant Growth Hormone subplots are blah at best. I did like the unexpected plot twist at the end showing how Matt’s getting crazier: first playing the dangerous game of publicly denying he’s Daredevil, and now this? Maybe this will give the series the shot in the arm it needs? Alex Maleev’s art is dependable as ever and I liked how he referenced the many fights between Daredevil and Kingpin by switching up his art style in each panel in homage to the different artists who’ve drawn this encounter before. Hardcore’s not a bad comic – it’s readable and mildly entertaining - but it’s not very impressive either. It's a perfect blend of noirish crime thriller and good, old-fashioned superhero action. The story moves forward at a brisk pace, and I absolutely loved Typhoid Mary and the new portrayal of Bullseye. The fight between Daredevil and Fisk in the final issue is memorable as well and I am excited to see how the story evolves in further issues.
