After meeting, I immediately observed his passion for swimming. He had been a competitive swimmer since age nine through college at St. Olaf’s as an All-American. As a coach, he has produced numerous state championships and national records.

Needless to say, I was somewhat intimidated by his credentials, I mean, here I am a “wanna be better than the middle of the pack swimmer,” and I have a championship coach critiquing my swim.

Jon took the time to teach me at my level and guaranteed he could improve my swim times if I just practiced what he taught me. He gave me the “fourth grade” version of what I needed to improve on and with some basic revisions to my kicking, pull and feel for the water, I was swimming faster and much more efficiently. My training partner is even finding me a little closer to her at the end of the workout. Thanks, Jon, your techniques and “secret” tips have really helped.

While I know I will never be a Michael Phelps, I never knew how much I could improve by taking one swimming lesson. Even if you are a middle- of-the-pack group member like me, I strongly recommend having a swim coach review your swim.

One thing Foss stresses is everyone can learn to swim. So do not write off triathlons just because you cannot swim. You are never too old to jump in the water for a swim lesson. 14 www.midwestevents.com www.midwestevents.com 15 www.midwestevents.com 17 18 www.midwestevents.com Athlete Profile :: Patrick Parish
