International Summer School in Architecture

 Program description The course aims to familiarize students with the architectural traditions of , Kuzbass of various historical periods: from the XVII to the XXI centuries. Special attention will be focused on such style as the Soviet avant-garde (constructivism). In the cities of Kuzbass – , , , etc. many architectural and urban monuments of the 1920-30’s have been preserved, which, according to experts, are the most interesting from the point of view of constructivist architecture and the history of the Soviet avant-garde.

This was the period of the formation of the Soviet state, the beginning of mass housing construction, where the basic principles of the new thinking of that time were embodied – saving materials, assembling buildings from finished parts, and, importantly, the idea of a healthy home, taking into account the psychological characteristics of space, the effect of insolation, color and shape, compensating the scarcity of appearance.

The course includes lectures on topics such as “Architectural and urban heritage of Kemerovo Region (Kuzbass)”, “Life in the monuments of modernism of the 1920’s and 30’s”, “Stalinist Empire style”, “Architectural renovation of degrading territories”, “Renaissance / creation of an urban atmosphere. Virtual architecture”, as well as various excursions and tourist routes both in the city of Novokuznetsk and outside the city. Students will be able to visit the cultural heritage site of federal significance Fortress in Novokuznetsk, the Krasnaya Gorka Museum in Kemerovo, constructivist buildings in Prokopyevsk, etc.

The International Summer School in Architecture provides an plein-air painting, which is held in the urban environment and in nature, drafts, sketches, graphic and painting works are performed. Plein-air objects: architecture of buildings and structures, urban ensembles, cultural heritage sites, a suburban area with a natural and urban landscape, industrial areas, etc. Trips to the sports and recreation camp Tarbagan, ethnic center “Ene-Tag” in the town of , Shorsky National Park in are planned.

The team of the Department of Architecture of SibSIU consists of experienced teachers, scientists, Honored Architects of the Russian Federation. Lectures, explanations during excursions, consultations when working in the open air will be conducted by professional architects: professor and corresponding member of Russian Academy of Architecture and Construction Sciences Yu.M. Zhuravkov; Honorary Architect of the Russian Federation A.N. Brichev; Honored Architect of the Russian Federation, Professor V.I. Magel Candidate of Architecture, Associate Professor E.A. Blaginyikh.

Upon completion of training at the International Summer Architectural School, a certificate of participation will be awarded.

The cost of participation in the program is 850 Euros. The fee covers visa support, training, teaching, materials, cultural programs, excursions, accommodation (14 days). Accommodation will be provided in the SibSIU dormitories located on the university campus. Payment is made in cash in rubles to the cash desk of the University upon arrival of participants. Meals during the stay in the city, with the exception of a welcoming and farewell dinner (only 12 days), are paid by students (about 200 Euros).

 Selection criteria Students majoring in architecture. Good command of the English language.
