We are MJCBY! It is as simple as that. You can see exactly who we are and what we are all about by coming to our services and programs and spending time in our building.

We could spend this entire booklet telling you all about our 100+ year history, but that is not what you want to know. You want to know how you and your family will fit into our community - and we are truly a community. From our oldest member - who is more than 100 years old - to our youngest, we not only seek to infuse the joy and love of Judaism in all that we do, but also foster a congregation that goes beyond the walls of our building.

Within this booklet, you will learn about our services, Early Childhood Learning Center, Religious School, Youth Groups, Adult Education programs, Men’s Club and Sisterhood among all of the other programs that you would expect a synagogue of our size to have, so we are going to use this welcome letter to tell you a little about MJCBY that you won’t find in this booklet - the special place it is because of the spirit that we carefully nuture.

It all starts with our demographics. Our members do not just come from the immediate area around Morristown. They also come from areas north as Mountain Lakes and Montville, east as Summit and west as Chester and Flanders. We have some families who have been members dating back to the founding of our synagogue and some who are brand new. But no matter where we live or what generation we belong to, we are a community. At MJCBY, even though we number more than 300 families, you will find members of the older generation greeting the youngest by name in the hallways and the youngest greeting them back, familar with each other from programs and services. On a shabbat morning, you will see our oldest members participating in services right along side our youngest - and we welcome member of any age who wants to take an active role in services, there are Shabbat mornings where our pre-B’nai Mitzvot and post B’nai Mitzvot children lead the majority of the service and do most if not all of the Torah readings.

This sense of community is not just limited to the four walls of our building. On any given Friday evening, you may find a congregational Shabbat dinner taking place at the synagogue or several small ones taking place in people’s homes, often spontaneously. When someone is in need of help, whether they be sick or simply needing a helping hand, numerous congregants step forward - there is never a shortage of helpers at MJCBY. And even more heartwarming is the bond that our children form while in our Nursery and Religious Schools. We often hear stories of the children, many of whom do not go to school together and only see each other once or twice a week, texting each other until all hours of the night because they have formed close bonds during their school time at MJCBY that stand the test of time. It is those stories that should give you the taste of what the MJCBY community is all about and we hope that we can welcome you into it.

The MJCBY Board of Directors and Clergy Meet Our Clergy & Senior Staff

Rabbi David Nesson joined MJCBY as its spiritual leader in 1988. Ordained by the Jewish Theological Seminary in 1983, Rabbi Nesson also holds an Honorary Doctorate of Divinity from JTS, a Master’s Degree in Jewish Education from JTS and graduated magna cum laude from Brandeis University. An active member of the Jewish community at large, he was the founding member of the MetroWest Rabbinic Cabinet, and serves on the UJC MetroWest Board of Trustees and on its Religious Pluralism Committees. He is a member of the Board of the New Jersey Region of the Rabbinical Assembly; member of the Rabbinic Council of the RTW Gottesman Academy and past chairman of the National Rabbinical Assembly’s Committee on continuing education. Rabbi Nesson is married to Ellen, and the father of two children, Leora Miriam and William Stuart. Favorite thing about MJCBY: To see all of our members and to share in the significant moments in their lives.

Cantor Shana Onigman joined MJCBY as its Hazzan in 2015. Cantor Onigman received her Bachelor of Arts from Bennington College and began her cantorial training at the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York (H.L. Miller Cantorial School) before transferring to the Hebrew College’s Program in Newton, MA. She received her Masters of Jewish Education and Certificate in Jewish Special Education before her ordination as Cantor at Hebrew College. Cantor Shana recently completed a unit of the Clinical Pastoral Education Program at Overlook Medical Center. She is a member of the Cantors Assembly and the New Jersey Cantors Choir Ensemble. Cantor Shana has served as a Cantor/Educator for the past ten years with extensive experience in Conservative and Reform synagogues, being active in all aspects of congregational life. Cantor Onigman is married to Matthew and has a daughter Lila and a son, Ilan, both students in our Religious School.

Our Life Long Learning program strives to create a community at MJCBY in which our congregants will value Jewish education highly and engage in it regularly so that they may become committed, knowledgeable and participating, Conservative Jews. They will be able to make informed Jewish choices and will live up to the highest ideals of our tradition.

From holiday workshops to B’nai Mitzvah programs, from Jewish lifecycles events to family worship, our families engage in a variety of programs each month designed not only to educate, but also to give opportunities to meet and establish a community of friends. Each month, MJCBY offers a variety of family worship services, including a Tot Shabbat service for our youngest members, a family service for all ages, and special services for other groups within our congregation. One Shabbat each month, young families experience TGIS: Thank G-d Its Shabbat, a Friday evening opportunity to pray, eat, and share Shabbat with others or Tot Shabbat, a Saturday morning service.

We run a comprehensive holiday education program with different events planned for each Jewish holiday from the High Holidays to Purim and Tu B’Shevat. We hold special programs for learners of all ages during the High Holidays to allow them to share in the experience in a manner which befits their age. From a Selichot Program for adults on Ethical Wills, to an interactive community High Holy Day service, our 6-8 programs a month challenge adults and families to seek more meaning from their Jewish experiences.

One of the things that MJCBY is known for is its education programs for all ages. Learning about Judaism does not stop with the end of Religious School. It is something that continues throughout your entire life. We place a great emphasis on our adult programs in order to provide a nurturing and exciting environment for all of our congregants -- not just our children -- to continue building the knowledge about our religion and community.

Seminars & Speakers - From our annual “Philosophers of February” series taught by the Rabbi to guest speakers which enhance our knowledge of Judaism as both a religion and a people, the MJCBY Adult Education Committee each year plans a calendar of activities focused on our adult members.

Adult Hebrew Classes - We offer Basic, Intermediate and Conversational Hebrew Classes for adults each Sunday during religious school.

Day Trips for Adults - Throughout the year, the Adult Education Committee schedules day trips, including special tours of Jewish historical sites in New York City and New Jersey.

Adult Bar/Bat Mitzvah Classes - Every two years our clergy leads the Adult Bar and Bat Mitzvah program which allows adults who did not become a Bar/Bat Mitzvah to become one. This class meets weekly over a period of 15 months.

Jewish Movie Night & Discussion - Several times throughout the year, the Adult Education Committee offers a movie night about various Jewish themes. Our Schools

E O d i t positive self-image as Jews. MJCBY is committed to providing quality, Conservative Jewish education for u a

c our children. We aspire to nourish the mind, heart and spirit of each child. Our school begins with comprehensive pre-school programs. These pre-school programs are under a curriculum umbrella designed to expose our pre-K group to the colors, shapes, numbers, and senses of our Jewish world. Gan (kindergarten), Alef (first grade) and Bet (second grade) meet weekly on Sunday mornings. The goals of the programs are for the students to feel at home in the synagogue, to meet other Jewish children their age and to delight in the holidays and other aspects of Jewish life by participating in hands-on experiences. All students are also introduced to the Alef-Bet and basic Hebrew reading using fun texts and hands-on language exploration. We offer an enrichment course for children in Kindergarten through second grade which meets on Wednesday afternoons and aims to expose children to lesser known Jewish topics, ranging from Where in the World do Jewish People live, to ancient Jewish recipes from Israel. The curriculum for third through seventh grades includes Hebrew reading, prayer, holidays, Bible, Mitzvot, Israel, life cycles, Holocaust and human identity, Judaism through art, etc. We offer academic enrichment including Israeli Dancing, Jewnet (Computer), and music. Occasional enrichment includes “Torah Yoga” and “Living Legacy” programs. Fun enhancements like Pajamas and Parsha, where children come in PJs to study Torah, or Slippers, Bracha and Bagel day, where students relax and learn brachot, a visiting Jewish author day, and a full technology center, make our religious school experience unlike any other.

We also offer a once-monthly program for our 8th through 12th graders, bringing in outsider speakers and facilitating discussions on current topics with our clergy.

Shalom Yeladim — The Judie Gerstein Early Learning Center is designed to provide a particular and unique experience for preschoolers ages 18 months to five years old.

Our comprehensive and developmentally appropriate program is designed to promote each child’s intellectual, social, physical and emotional growth. All games and activities are skill-based and goal oriented, so the children grow with everything they do. Our age-appropriate curriculum combines a celebration of Judaism with the children’s daily experiences and observations, plus critical learning and developmental concepts.

We offer full and half day nursery school programs. The daily schedule is planned to include active and quiet times, gross and fine motor activities and child-initiated as well as staff-initiated activities. Outdoor (weather permitting) or indoor play is scheduled each day. Cognizant that every child learns differently, we use various mediums to teach. Children’s interests are explored through inquiry and research methods. Assessment is also an important part of the curriculum. Before and After Care is available from 7:30 am to 6:30 pm.

Rabbi Nesson and Cantor Onigman regularly spend time in the nursery school, teaching the children about the Jewish Holidays and rituals. Sisterhood

Within MJCBY’s Sisterhood, you have a chance to enrich your lives with educational and entertaining programs, form new friendships and become an active part in the synagogue. All members of Sisterhood join voices within the Women’s League of Conservative Judaism (WLCJ), representing a wide array of national, religious and social action organizations. We warmly welcome anyone who wants to play a part –small or large- with this outstanding group of women.

Men’s Club

The MJCBY Men’s Club is much more than a social organization. We are committed to working with the entire Congregation and the Clergy to benefit the community, our Synagogue and our own lives. We do this with Avodah (service) to both the synagogue and the community, Social, and Educational events. We strongly encourage you to join us. We host multiple events and invite you to experience the joy of participation by joining the Men’s Club. The activities of the MJCBY Men’s Club can be grouped into five categories: Avodah to the Synagogue - Provides the MJCBY community with assistance when there is important work to be done. Activities include serving as ushers at the High Holiday services, building the synagogue Sukkah, and sponsoring the tefillin and tallit program are both rewarding and enjoyable. Avodah to the Community - Supports the broader community with a variety of outreach activities, including: The Annual Blood Drive, the twinning program with a foreign Jewish Congregation, and assisting at the local soup kitchen. Learning & Education - Sponsors timely lectures and monthly programs of interest to our congregation including talks by politicians, authors, doctors, journalists, and celebrities. Social - Not neglecting the social needs of our membership, we provide a variety of fraternal and family oriented events each year. Some of the events our members enjoy are: Football Tailgate Parties, Cigar/Scotch tastings, summer softball team, and joint activities with the Sisterhood. Tzedakah - The Men’s Club always plans “fun”-raising events, giving us an opportunity to have some fun and raise money and awareness for important causes. Youth Groups

The four youth groups at MJCBY offer dynamic, Jewish experiences for children in grades 3-12. Our youth groups provide fun, engaging opportunities for children to develop awareness and pride in being Jewish; to enhance their comfort with Jewish tradition; and to help build leadership skills. They are all opportunities to develop childhood relationships and connections that the children never forget. Sababah (Grades 3 - 4) - A program unique to MJCBY, Sababah bridges the gap between family programming and Kadima. The goal is to add to your child’s life an experience that builds their Jewish identity through group activities in a socialized environment. Geared for grades 3-4 and often building on preschool connections made at the Shalom Yeladim–Judie Gerstein Early Learning Center and in the early years at our Religious School, the children get very excited about their first social activity without parents! The group meets monthly for Jewish activity, typically staying at MJCBY after Sunday school. There are also evening parties, holiday celebrations, movie nights and trips to Jewish destinations throughout the year. Kadima (Grades 5 - 8) - The middle-school-age affiliate of United Synagogue Youth (USY), Kadima is for grades 5-8. Kadima provides a much-needed break for today’s busy tween, who is navigating new academics and friends at junior high, mastery of trope, a mitzvah project, the Bar/Bat Mitzvah itself and thinking about high school. Awash in more responsibilities than ever before, Kadima members enjoy Jewish and secular activities and trips with friends they’ve often had since preschool. Kadima at MJCBY is reinvigorated with new, fun programs in addition to monthly meetings after Sunday school. USY (Grades 9 - 12) - United Synagogue Youth (USY) is a high-school youth group, inspiring Jewish youth to explore, celebrate and practice ethical values, Jewish Living, Zionism and community responsibility based on the ideology of the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism. MJCBY is in the Hagalil region (Central & Northern Jersey). Members have tremendous opportunities to have fun, make new friends and build their leadership skills while planning chapter events such as lounge nights, Movies, Tikkun Olam programs and trips. And they have an even bigger stage for growing their social and leadership skills by participating at regional and national events, including dances and conventions. Minyonaires (Post B’nai Mitzvah Teens) - Minyonaires is another group unique to MJCBY. Our Minyonaires lead services monthly, chant Torah and Haftorah and deliver D’vrei Torah. This program has been recognized with several awards by United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism.

Community Outreach

Community is very important to MJCBY and it goes beyond the walls of our synagogue. MJCBY has a number of very vibrant community groups that reach out to both our immediate Morristown community, but also the Jewish community worldwide.

Social Action – MJCBY participates in a number of community outreach programs that fulfill our mission of Tikkun Olam – Repairing the World. On the 4th Sunday of each month, we prepare and serve meals at Morristown’s Community Soup Kitchen. Several times a year, we provide volunteers to staff the host site, cook meals and offer support to families for the Interfaith Council for Homeless Families. All of our B’nai Mitzvah children take part in a mitzvah project of their choice as a part of their preparations for their becoming a Jewish adult. Shalom Club - In conjunction with the JCC MetroWest, MJCBY hosts a weekly seniors group called the Shalom Club. The group takes trips, shares a monthly lunch, celebrates holidays with other groups at the JCC and brings in outside speakers. Every Tuesday from 11 am—1 pm, MJCBY opens its doors for the senior gatherings. Tikkun Olam Together - Life-Long Learning’s Family Mitzvah Corps - Families with children ages 3 and older are invited to participate in a once a month family mitzvah project designed to introduce your children to different types of mitzvot and the work that is required of each of us.

Each year, MJCBY participates in a variety of community programming including fielding a team for the Run for Rachel, a 5K race in Livingston, NJ, marching in the Israel Day Parade in New York City and working the phones at the Jewish Vocational Service’s Annual Job-A- Thon to identify job leads for members of our MetroWest Community.
