Aquatic Botany 78 (2004) 3–14 Limited effects of grazer exclusion on the epiphytes of Posidonia sinuosa in South Australia Dominic Keuskamp∗ School of Biological Sciences, Flinders University of South Australia, GPO Box 2100, Adelaide SA 5001, Australia Received 8 August 2002; received in revised form 10 July 2003; accepted 22 August 2003 Abstract The role of grazing in regulating the abundance and biomass of epiphytes of the seagrass Posidonia sinuosa Cambridge et Kuo was investigated at an oligotrophic site in lower Spencer Gulf, South Australia. Prosobranch gastropods >7 mm in size were excluded from 0.25 m2 plots of seagrass for 3 months with four steel mesh cages, compared with four partial cages used to control for cage artefacts, and also four uncaged control plots. Abundances of epiphytic algae, invertebrates and epiphytic mass (DW, AFDW and calcium carbonate) were recorded regularly. The indirect effect of grazer exclusion on seagrass leaf mortality (necrosis) was also measured. Grazing effects on the epiphytic assemblage were detected despite some cage artefacts. Filamentous algal abundance and epiphytic biomass (AFDW) increased in response to grazer exclusion. Caging per se reduced crustose coralline algal cover and calcium carbonate during the experimental period but, after 3 months, no artefact or treatment effect was discernible. Abundances of invertebrate taxa were little affected by grazer exclusion although caging per se reduced the density of spirorbid polychaetes. Grazer exclusion did not affect seagrass necrosis. In comparison with similar studies and given the duration of exclusion, the sum of treatment effects on epiphytes and seagrass was small. Rather, the role of epiphyte grazing in this nutrient-poor area appears to be limited to the maintenance of an epiphytic assemblage that is free of filamentous algae and dominated by crustose corallines. -

González, MafaldaAdditional information Freitas and is available Paulo at Henriques the end of the chapter Additional information is available at the end of the chapter http://dx.doi.org/10.5772/intechopen.71614 Abstract In this review article, the authors explore a broad spectrum of subjects associated to marine snails of the genus Phorcus Risso, 1826, namely, distribution, habitat, behaviour and life history traits, and the consequences of anthropological impacts, such as fisheries, pollution, and climate changes, on these species. This work focuses on discussing the ecological importance of these sentinel species and their interactions in the rocky shores as well as the anthropogenic impacts to which they are subjected. One of the main anthro- pogenic stresses that affect Phorcus species is fisheries. Topshell harvesting is recognized as occurring since prehistoric times and has evolved through time from a subsistence to commercial exploitation level. However, there is a gap of information concerning these species that hinders stock assessment and management required for sustainable exploi- tation. Additionally, these keystone species are useful tools in assessing coastal habitat quality, due to their eco-biological features. Contamination of these species with heavy metals carries serious risk for animal and human health due to their potential of biomag- nification in the food chain. -

Abstract: A small but old collection of mollusc from Dr. Wiesinger's legacy got to the collection of the Natural History Department of Somogy County Museum. Altogether 2600 items, 18000 specimens can be found in the revised collection, the bigger part of the collection (Tolnai's coll.) date from the first part of 20th century. Now the author published the date of Tolnai's collection in this paper. There are collection materials not only from Dr. Tolnai but also his famous contemporary malacologists: Streda R., H. Aceptado el 24-V-2012 ABSTRACT A recent molecular study has shown that the well-known intertidal Cape Verde topshell, previ- ously identified as Osilinus punctulatus, O. tamsi or O. atratus, is a distinct undescribed species (DONALD,PRESTON,WILLIAMS,REID,WINNER,ALVAREZ,BUGE,HAWKINS,TEMPLADO &SPENCER, 2012). Therefore we describe it here as new for science and compare it to the closest species. Belgium. SUMMARY: The gastropod family Hipponicidae comprises widely distributed but poorly known sedentary species. On the beach-rock of the coral reefs of Laing Island (Papua New Guinea) live rich populations of several gastropod Turbo species of which many specimens have attached to their shell a hipponicid gastropod attributed to a new species, Antisabia juliae. This new species, described in this paper, appears to have adapted its mode of life on live turbinids in several ways result- ing in morphological changes (thin basal plate loosely adherent to the supporting shell, functional eyes, very long snout, functional radula, small osphradium) and ethological changes (foraging behaviour: it appears to feed on the epiphytic com- munity growing on the host, in the vicinity of the “host” shell). Except for these characteristics, the mode of life appears quite similar to that of other hipponicid species with few big females surrounded by several much smaller males. Development occurs within the egg mass inside the female shell and a few young snails escape at the crawling stage.
