President’s Column

by Bruce Culmer

As this is the last newsletter during my term, I want to thank all of the volunteers who have helped both me and the unit during the last two years. They are the ones that keep the unit operating and providing bridge events for the members.

A couple of new things: We now have a partnership site on the web where people can leave their names or check to see if there are others who they might want to ask to play. Leo Cardillo is the current partnership chairman and is doing a fine job.

We have also agreed to become a part of those eligible to join the Northwest Federal Credit Union. This means that any member of the NVBA and their families will be eligible to join this credit union if you wish. This is a benefit to our members without a cost to the organization. Be assured we will not give a list of names, addresses or e-mail addresses to the credit union. They will not contact you unless you contact them. It will be completely up to our membership to either take advantage of this opportunity or to ignore it.

I hope to see all of you at the annual meeting.

Help Wanted The NVBA needs a Membership Secretary -- It’s a paid position. Interested persons should call Lucy McCoy at 703-848-2331 for details

2 February -- April 2003 NVBA Newsletter Annual Meeting, Election and Bridge

It’s annual meeting and election time once again. We’ll gather starting at 5:30 pm at the Knights of Columbus Hall (KOCH), 5115 Little Falls Road in Arlington on Thursday, May 8. The evening will start with a picnic dinner, which is free for NVBA members ($7.50 for non-members). Voting will take place during the meal, which will be followed at 7 pm by the annual meeting.

After the meeting, the sixth annual Pat Eyman Strawberry Pairs will be held. It’ll be a Strataflighted Unit Championship Charity game. Flight A/X (3000+/0-3000) will be a separate game from the Flight B (500-2000)/C (0-500) game. We will also run a 0-199 game. The fee for the charity game is $8.00.

The offices of President and Secretary, plus four positions are up for election. All candidates who have not yet declared their candidacy must have a petition signed by 25 NVBA members submitted to Elections Chair Bob Hartmann no later than April 24 in order to get their name on the ballot. Absentee ballots will be available after April 24 for any member who will miss the election and would like to vote. You may apply for an absentee ballot by writing to the Membership Secretary, Norma Pierzchala, at 2200 Columbia Pike, #1006, Arlington, VA 22204. Ballots must be returned to Norma by noon, May 8.

The picnic dinner, the annual meeting and awards to our top players in all categories, the election, and bridge will make this a fun evening for everyone...please join us.

NVBA Newsletter February – April 2003 3 The Candidates for NVBA Officers and Board of Directors are:

Leo Cardillo This last year has provided me with an — for opportunity to serve on the NVBA Board of President Directors and to provide support and guidance to the Thomas Jefferson High School Bridge Club. On the NVBA Board, my efforts have been focused on fulfilling the responsibilities of the Partnership Chair and creating an on-line partnership desk.

I have volunteered to run for President of NVBA when Bruce's term ends. If elected I will focus on continuing to improve the quality and quantity of bridge played at NVBA. I specifically want to continue efforts to encourage play by inactive/beginning members at the same time that we grow the membership, with an emphasis on younger players that are needed to ensure the future of the game. I will work cooperatively with all the members of the Board to support and improve the NVBA. Lucy McCoy I have been playing bridge in Northern Virginia off — for and on since the late 1970’s. In 2000 I volunteered to handle the NVBA Board’s Secretary secretarial duties, having recently retired from the government. I soon found out that these duties involve more than just taking good minutes, so I have learned on the job as I go. It is important to me that the Unit has accurate records of policy decisions and membership activities. The secretary also is responsible for correspondence with the ACBL, waiving the 30-day requirement for a new club to operate before it can issue master points, and coordinates with the ACBL on numerous membership and election issues. Serving on the board in any capacity is an interesting and varied volunteer activity for someone who is looking for an opportunity to give something back to the game that they enjoy playing.

4 February -- April 2003 NVBA Newsletter Pete Hughes -- Having lived in the area since before my high for Board school days (Washington-Lee, 1959), I may be as close a thing as there is in the NVBA to a native. member In 1997 I retired from a career as a civilian system analyst for the Navy. Retirement triggered a change in my bridge habits – from being an evening player to playing mostly in the day games. So I have a background playing in many of the NVBA clubs. I am both a certified director and teacher, but I have enjoyed playing too much to have any other bridge role. UNTIL NOW. I look forward to the opportunity to represent the views of our bridge playing population should I serve as a member of the NVBA Board. Ron Kral -- for I learned bridge in college, but gave it up for Board many years. I began playing again seriously member about 8 years ago. My goal is to one day become an A player who can compete at the national level. Since I have been on the Board, I’ve worked on several projects including researching new tables, helping to plan the web site for the 2002 Nationals, and formatting the NVBA portion of the NVBA/WBL Membership Directory.

I’d like to be given the opportunity to give back something to the game I love. Two of my main interests are to bring more new players into the game and increase the attendance at our unit game. I’m an independent computer consultant and live in Reston with my wife and two teenage children. Paul Krueger Four years ago I returned to bridge after a 35 — for Board year absence. Last year I was fortunate enough member (with Mel Yudkin) to represent District 6 in the C Flight of the North American Open Pairs at the Houston Spring Nationals.

Like others on the Board I want to give back to the game that has given me so much pleasure. In particular I would like to foster a program whereby the NVBA would provide guidance and instruction to new players who are able to compete at a serious level.

NVBA Newsletter February – April 2003 5 Barry Sparks I am running for my third term on the NVBA Board — for Board to eliminate waste, fraud and abuse; stimulate the economy; reduce taxes and make sure there is a member chicken in every pot (or was that pot in every chicken?). In reality, I would like to help the unit provide quality service to our membership at the lowest possible cost.

NVBA Newsletter February – April 2003 11 Ten things you would never hear a bridge player say.

1. The temperature in the room today is just perfect. 2. Free coffee? No thanks. 3. Cool! A four-board sit out. 4. No, I don't think tournament fees are too high. 5. I can always count on partner to remember every convention on our card. 6. No gossip please. I'm not interested. 7. More new Alerts! More please! 8. Its amazing -- no matter which direction we sit -- the cards always go our way. 9. These computer hands are just like the ones we shuffle and deal. 10. Thank you director. You were correct to change our score from plus 1430 to minus 200 because my partner's wasn't perfect.

NVBA Newsletter February – April 2003 13 Miracle in the Menagerie By Paul K. Krueger

The following hand occurred in the January 2002 Washington (DC) Bridge League Sectional but it could have just as easily appeared at a table in ’s revered Griffins Club. My partner and I were playing East- West in the Thursday night B/C Stratiflighted pairs when Board 4 came up. In order to protect the not so innocent, imagine that the Hideous Hog was West and the Rueful Rabbit was East.

North S - 1043 H – KQJ6 West D – Q83 East S – K C – Q43 S – AJ98762 H – 532 H – A8 D – AJ109762 South D - C – K10 S – Q5 C – AJ96 H – 10974 D – K54 C – 8752

Everyone was vulnerable and the Hog dealt.

N E S W - - - 1D P 2S P 3D P 3S P 3N P 4C P 4S P 5H P 5N P 6C All pass

The Hog, true to form, wanted to play the hand at NT and bid it twice, while the Rabbit, dazzled by his 7-card suit, 3

14 February -- April 2003 NVBA Newsletter Aces and a , every suit he could. The Hog eventually gave up, figuring it was better to have the Rabbit in a presumed 5-2 fit rather than a presumed 6-1 fit. If you have blind faith, or a Guardian Angel, there is nothing to the play. Win the opening heart lead in hand, cross to the King of Spades, discard a heart on the Ace of Diamonds, cash the King of Clubs and lead the 10 of Clubs through North finessing for the Q (overtaking the 10 with the J if North doesn’t cover). Draw the remaining trumps and cash the Ace of Spades dropping the Queen. Run the Spades making 7 with your 4-2 fit. The Hog and Rabbit (i.e. my partner and I) got a miraculous, albeit undeserved, top. How much of a miracle? Well -- clubs must split 4-3 with the Q tripleton on side, a 13.5% chance. And then the spades must split 3-2 with the Q doubleton, a 28.2% chance. The joint probability of these two events (adjusted for cards already played) is 3.8%.

Of course all of this is highly unrealistic. We all know that with Papa the Greek and Karapet the Unlucky sitting North- South, the Hideous Hog would have insisted on playing the hand in NT. 7NT that is, redoubled, making.
