Founded in February 1985 by William Baker as Gwinnett Festival Singers, known from 1998-2015 as William Baker Festival Singers Atlanta, and from 2015-2017 as Lynn Swanson Festival Singers, the Choral Foundation’s oldest ensemble has a rich history of artistic accomplishment including appearances at regional conventions of the American Choral Director’s Association, the National Association for Music Education, the American Guild of Organists, the DeKalb International Choral Festival, the Arts International Festival, and the Christmas Atlanta Festival. Additionally, The chorus has appeared on local radio and television throughout the south.The 40-voice chorale specializes in concerts of short-form a cappella classical works, spirituals and folk music from across the globe.

The ensemble took the name New South Festival Singers in 2017 with the appointment of Andrew Phillip Schmidt as the third Music Director & Conductor.

New South Festival Singers has continued the 35 year legacy of performing at the world-renowned Piccolo- Spoleto Festival in Charleston, SC. Recordings of the ensemble can be found under its previous names.

The Atlanta-based New South Festival Singers has performed a large body of choral/orchestral masterworks. Most recently as NSFS they have been joined by full orchestra and distinguished soloists presenting Requiem by Duruflé and by Faure, and Beethoven's Mass in C Major. In prior years the Festival Singers have performed Brahms' Ein deutsches Requiem, Bach's St. John Passion, Magnificat, Mass in B minor, Christ lag in todesbanden, and Wachet auf, Buxtehude's Membra Jesu Nostri and Jesu, Meine Freude, Britten's Rejoice in the Lamb, Ceremony of Carols and Festival Te Deum, Kodály's Laudes Organi, Stravinsky's Mass and Symphony of Psalms, Handel's Messiah, Mozart's Solemn Vespers, Requiem, Regina Coeli, Missa Brevis in D, and Mass in C minor, and Mendelssohn: Elijah. 2019-2020 New South Festival Singers

ANDREW PHILLIP SCHMIDT is a native of Southern Illinois. His parents passed along their love and respect for music by enrolling their son in piano lessons at age six, adding oboe lessons at age nine. High school choir sparked a passion for choral music that has since become the driver of Andrew’s life. He holds a M. M. in Choral Conducting from the University of Washington under the tutelage of Dr. Geoffrey Boers and Dr. Giselle Wyers, as well as a B.M.E. from Northwestern University, Evanston, IL. Andrew Currently teaches at the Midtown International School in Atlanta, GA. Andrew was appointed Music Director & Conductor of the Choral Foundation’s original Festival Singers ensemble in June 2017. Andrew Schmidt's work with the Masterworks Chorale (Belleville, IL) was aired on St. Louis Public Radio's "Cityscape". Additionally, he has conducted at the Sarteano Chamber Choir Festival, Princeton Festival, National Conductor’s Symposium, Rodney Eichenberger Conducting Workshop, University of Illinois Conductor’s Symposium, Atlanta Choral Institute, and Montreal Choral Masterclass. Andrew held a University of Washington FLAS (Foreign Language Area Studies) Fellowship for Estonian and Baltic/Western European Studies. He was also the recipient of a U.S. Student Fulbright Fellowship to Estonia where he lived, studied, and researched in Tallinn, Estonia as well as sang and toured with Tallinna Kammerkoor. He has also sung with nationally renowned groups like Seattle Pro Musica, the Kinnara Ensemble, and The Esoterics, and worked as a soloist with choirs throughout the Pacific Northwest, American Southwest, and Central Midwest regions.

DR. KIRK MICHAEL RICH is the Director of Music at All Saints’ Episcopal Church. A native of Kentucky, Kirk has served as a liturgical organist for over two decades. He holds degrees in organ performance from the Oberlin College Conservatory, the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, and a doctorate from the University of Houston’s Moores School of Music. Additional study has been with Francesco Cera in Italy and Ludger Lohmann in Germany. Kirk has performed in England, France, Italy, and across the U.S. in venues such as St. Thomas Church, Fifth Avenue (New York City), the Kennedy Center (Washington, DC), and three national conventions of the American Guild of Organists. Most recently, he served as organist for the RSCM America National Choir residency at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin, Ireland, under the direction of Bruce Neswick. Kirk’s performances have been broadcast nationally on American Public Media’s Pipedreams program.At All Saints’, Kirk oversees every aspect of the music program. He directs the Adult Choir comprised of approximately forty singers, shares in the organ-playing responsibilities with the associate director of music, and manages a concert series. Additionally, Kirk oversees the maintenance and care of the Kenan Memorial Organ, Buzard, Op. 29. Before coming to All Saints’, Kirk served as Associate Director of Music and Organist at St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Houston, where he directed a chamber choir of adults and treble choristers using the Royal School of Church Music Voice for Life! curriculum. From 2014-2017 he served as Organist-Choirmaster for the High Holidays at Congregation Beth Israel, the oldest Jewish congregation in Houston. Kirk is married to violist Laura Reksc-Rich. They are the proud parents of Gatsby, a rescued Pomeranian. The New South Festival Singers is an ensemble of The William Baker Choral Foundation, a national organization based in Roeland Park, Kansas, that presently sponsors choral ensembles located in three states involving hundreds of men, women and youth. The Foundation also sponsors Amber Waves Music Publishing, a creative company that offers more than 50 quality titles in worldwide distribution (www.AmberWavesPublishing.com). The Choral Foundation offers a year-round Student Intern program for conductors in masters-level study, and a Choral Scholar program for conductors studying at the doctoral level, and is the sponsoring organization for the Jane Sullivan Choral Resource Library and the Institute for Healthy Singing. The unique continuing education program enables aspiring conductors to gain practical experience in musical leadership and management of a major arts organization.
