The ISKF continues to experience a period of dynamic change and growth. As you all know, Grand Master Teruyuki Okazaki, Chairman of the ISKF, announced his retirement at Master Camp 2015. The following year at Master Camp 2016, Master Yutaka Yaguchi, ISKF Vice Chairman and Chairman of the Technical Committee, announced his retirement. These are two legendary instructors and direct students of Masters Funakoshi and Nakayama. They both left home to embark on this new adventure to bring karate to the west. We thank them for their decades of instruction, guidance, and perspective as karateka and leaders of our organization.

We are also very excited about the future of our organization. Hiroyoshi Okazaki Shihan, 9th Dan, is now Chairman and Chief Instructor of the ISKF and continues to lead the organization into the future. For years, Hiroyoshi Okazaki Shihan was an outstanding competitor both nationally and internationally. Once he retired from competition he took on the role of judge at major tournaments and then became a member of the technical committee. He also began to tour and give seminars all over the world. Anyone who has taken a class with him knows he is a master technician.

Sensei James Field took over as Chairman of the Technical Committee once Master Yaguchi retired. Sensei Field is revered in the karate community. Sensei Field always reminds us to follow the Dojo and Niju Kun. He always credits his instruction from Masters Yaguchi and Nakayama for setting his foundation for strict adherence to protocol and following karate etiquette.

Again, we are in great hands as the ISKF transitions. That is not to say, that our leaders will not face challenges in their new roles. They will have the help and support of the ISKF officers and board members. The board has also changed leadership. Lance Astrella is the new ISKF President and he is joined by the following officers: Martin Vaughan and Tony Tam, Vice Presidents; Jaron Burch, Treasurer, and Lois Luzi, Secretary. Please wish them all success in their new roles and let's all support their efforts to lead our organization to greater heights.

How do you prevent basic injuries? You must always warm up and stretch before major activities. Some studies show that starting with slow dynamic or static stretches or even jumping jacks helps to get the blood flowing.

He recommended doing a combination of concentric and eccentric strengthening exercises. Two easy exercises for the hamstring that will help your movement and power are Alpine stretches and Plyo lunges but not high repetitions. A few concentric exercises are squat jumps, hip thrusts, and single leg bridges. Try to develop a better whole body fitness routine. Cross train in a different sport or activity. Yoga is wonderful cross training for karate. For upper body, try rock climbing, or ballet for all over body movement. It is also a different way to build power.

Introductions

•Ms. Luzi introduced all in attendance as there were many new members attending the meeting this year.

1.1 ISKF Chairman Hiroyoshi Okazaki opened the meeting with a greeting, thanking everyone for their effort to be there. Shihan Okazaki stated that ISKF is a world organization now and that he appreciates all of their support. He extended a special thank you to Ronald Pedreanez from Venezuela for making such an effort to be there with all of the turmoil going on in his country.

ISKF Spotlight Page 7 2017 ISKF Board of Directors & Board of Governors Annual Meeting June 12, 2017

Chairman Hiroyoshi Okazaki relayed a message from Grand Master Teruyuki Okazaki sending his best wishes to everyone and remarked that Grand Master Teruyuki Okazaki is doing very well.

1.2 Shihan James Field, Chairman of the ISKF Technical Committee and member of the ISKF Shihankai addressed the group: The Shihankai along with the unanimous agreement of the Technical Committee made the decision to promote Shihan Hiroyoshi Okazaki to the rank of 9th Dan. A round of applause and congratulations followed.

Mr. Lance Astrella, ESQ. – ISKF President welcomed everyone. He stated that in keeping with his promise that ISKF International would be restructured to be a more functional and modern organization which was accomplished with a great deal of help from our Chairman and the officers of the organization as well as from Mr. Tony Tam from ISKF Canada who is a corporate attorney.

3.Report on the International Organization

•Mr. Tony Tam, ESQ presented a new structure of the ISKF International. In a structural legal sense, every country is a member country and the directors here will now be called a Governor for your country. There will be 5 regions around the world: Pan America, Asia, Africa, Europe, Middle East. Every country will fall within one of those regions. Each region will have Governors for their region. The Governors will be advisors to the Chairman within the ISKF. One of the main functions of the Board of Governors will be to nominate a Regional Director. However, based on the recommendations of the Board of Governors the appointment of the Regional Director will be by the ISKF Chairman – Shihan Hiroyoshi Okazaki, who has the final decision. The five regional directors will form a Board of Directors and will include Shihan Hiroyoshi Okazaki as well as the Secretary and Treasurer of the organization. This Board of Directors will have the authority and power to deal with the administrative aspects of our organization. With this Board in place the organization will have more structure. The formal By- Laws will be finalized and sent to you.

Approval of Minutes

•A motion was made to approve the Minutes from the 2016 ISKF Board of Directors & Board of Governors Annual Meeting on June 13, 2016. Resolved: the Minutes from the meeting on June 13, 2016 were approved without modification.

ISKF Spotlight Page 8 2017 ISKF Board of Directors & Board of Governors Annual Meeting June 12, 2017 a. 2016 in Review

1.A welcome was given to Ecuador, which has now rejoined the ISKF, and the director Mr. Arturo Garcia.

1.Our 50th Anniversary ISKF Master Camp was well attended with over 400 participants and 41 countries.

1.Mr. San Pillay reported that the ISKF World Shoto Cup held in Cape Town, South Africa was successful and thanked those who were able to participate.

1.Ms. Luzi reported on the Fee Structure sent to everyone via email. As there was concern regarding the increase in fees, it was explained that our accountant has been making recommendations to help ISKF grow and the necessity to raise fees so that the ISKF can grow stronger and remain competitive with other organizations. It was also explained that it is very important to tell headquarters the number of members each country has so that the accountant can create a budget. All countries were requested to send this information to ISKF Headquarters by July 1st. Ms. Luzi reiterated the importance of keeping the organization solvent and the necessity to increase fees, however, Shihan Hiroyoshi Okazaki understands that some people may have special circumstances and your emails regarding your concerns about the fee increases have been taken into consideration. Technically the ISKF is top notch and is not going anywhere and is still a traditional organization and we continue to get more member countries. However, because the fees have stayed the same for many years we worry about not having the funds to continue to have Master Camp, and headquarters has also reviewed other expenses and have cut costs. ISKF must increase fees and this will take effect January 1st, 2018. Just like our karate, the organization needs to have a strong foundation.

a. 2018 Business Plan

a. Other Business

If they do not have the ISKF Passport they will not receive a dan certificate. The examiner must now circle on the dan registration form at the bottom “Yes” or “No” if the person testing has their ISKF Passport along with the result of the exam.

1.The new 5th Edition ISKF Tournament Rulebook is available now on the ISKF Website.

1.Mr. Michael Katayanagi – ISKF Treasurer requested everyone go on the ISKF Website and check their country’s information. He requested everyone let ISKF Headquarters know when they are hosting an event so it can be posted on the ISKF website.

1.All requests for an ISKF instructor/examiner to visit a country must come through ISKF Headquarters in written format even if the instructor was contacted directly and agreed.

A motion was made by Mr. Gary Swain – USA/Mountain States to adjourn the ISKF Board of Directors Annual Meeting of June 12, 2017, and was seconded by Mr. Martin Vaughan – USA/Mid-America. All in favor – Motion carried.
