FOREWORD

Welcome to Cockburn Cricket Club’s wind up and presentation of the 2013/2014 Yearbook. This publication is set to celebrate the highs and the lows of a year that culminated in 6 of our original 7 sides making finals, of which 3 sides made the Grand Final. Congratulations to Sandro and his side that ended up winning the SMCA 6th grade pennant against a star studded Leeming Spartans.

This Yearbook provides you with a comprehensive look at player statistics, milestones and most importantly club achievements. It also contains reports from the President, all Captains, the Coach and the Committee on this season’s events - you may encounter a little humour along the way.

The Club continues to update the historical statistics data which can be viewed at our website www.cockburncricket.com. All seasons dating back to the club’s inception have been entered into the statistics database. A special thank you to Life Member Joe Covic, who has managed this project for the past 4 seasons, including entering data from every match dating back to the 1981/1982 season.

The Yearbook has been a work in progress throughout the year with the finishing touches in the last few weeks. This year special recognition must go to Stan Koios and his band of merry men who contributed to this production. Guys who pitched in were Chris Scenini, Troy Evans, Anthony Every, Jake Mirco, Jay Goddin, Brendan Jones. Thanks for your support.

Finally, I hope you enjoy this book and treat it with the respect it deserves. This Yearbook is a precious memory of the 2013/2014 Season. This publication will be looked upon in years to come as a historical piece of the Cockburn Cricket Club.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Thank you to everyone who played or volunteered their time to the Cockburn Cricket Club this season.

This season we wanted to improve the facilities for our members at Davilak Oval, we installed a big screen and projector as well as air conditioning to the home change rooms, this came in very handy on the hot days where the players able to cool down in the rooms during the tea break.

It is very pleasing to hear many positive comments from not only our members but also from opposition clubs complementing our facilities at Davilak.

This season we were hoping to have volunteers to help out in the kitchen to help provide food on Thursday and Saturday nights. Unfortunately there were not many willing to help out in this area. Special thanks must go to Sue Aguiar for coordinating the food preparation and to all the members of the committee who took turns to help out and keep the guys fed.

At the start of the season we were looking for players to recruit to help bolster our first grade stocks, Chris Kercheval was recruited to the club and has fitted in very will, he has a great future in cricket ahead of them and we hope that he will continue with us again next season and beyond. Also new to the club this season was John Braid who has brought with him a lot of experience and has been great around the club, young Jaron Tuxford made a return to cricket after a few season off and had an outstanding season and hope that he progresses further next season and put pressure on the first grade side for a spot.

This season Fedele Camarda made a return as Head Coach, Fedele efforts have been outstanding. This season we had 6 out of 7 sides make the finals at the end of the season. Fedele was given great support by Lance Black who again was the nets coach, as well as Steve Camarda and Matt Watson also providing support. Thanks again for the tireless work you have all put in and hope you will all follow up again next season.

Our record on the field has also again been good all season, we only had one report for the year in the semi final and the player received a suspended sentence, thanks to all the Captains and our Players who have maintained our good record.

Our only failure at the P&D Tribunal was in our appeal against the SMCA and their interpretation of the rule for One Day Mid year final; unfortunately we were not able to convince the P&D and were stripped of the 5th Grade One Day Final. To Fedele and the boys who won this match fair and square, they can never take that win away from us; you were the better side on the day and won the game convincingly. It’s our flag and will remain our premiership flag.

The main disappointment this season was the 1st Grade again missing out on the finals, at the start of the season their was high hopes that with the recruitment of Chris Kercheval as the keeper batsman, we would be pushing for the finals again. Unfortunately we lost matches that should have been won and couldn’t string wins together. They did however make the mid year One Day Final, finishing that competition on top of the ladder only to go down to East Fremantle in the Final. The club will need to make some changes next season to get this side back in the finals and being a force in the competition again.

8 COCKBURN CRICKET CLUB YEARBOOK 2013/2014

Congratulations to the six teams that made the semi finals, unfortunately we had three sides drop out of the premiership race in the first week of the finals, well done to all of you on making the final. You have all made everyone associated with the Cockburn Cricket Club very proud on the way you all performed all season but just fell that one game short of making the Grand Final.

Well done to the three sides that made it to the Grand Final, well done to you all. It was a great effort by unfortunately our 2nd Grade and ODA side missed out on taking out the premierships in those grade, the old saying catches wins matches and unfortunately we couldn’t hold the vital ones.

To our Premiership side this year, our 4th Grade Side that was well led by Sandi Viti all season. Well done to all of you on a great win, you guys made everyone at Cockburn very proud of your achievements. You were the top side all season, unfortunately lost the One Day Final but you were all determined to come back and make amends in the two day final and you did it easily at the end. Well done.

A special thanks goes to Peter Taylor-Thorpe, Peter would always help out at the club and if he could see something wasn’t being done would go and do it without being asked. He also opened up the club during the Christmas break to try and have a few of the members come down for a beer and watch the on the big screen. Peter you have done an outstanding job around the club and you have give me great support throughout the season. I would like to thank you Peter on behalf of everyone from the Cockburn Cricket Club.

Thank you also to Sue Aguiar and Arron Savage for the work that you have put in all season, Sue was able to raise $3,000 for the McGrath Foundation with the High Tea and Pink Stumps day, an amazing effort. To a few of our young Committee Members this year, Daniel Aguiar and Troy Evans, thanks for you efforts, it was very much appreciated and hope that you will be able to carry on this good work next season.

Thanks you also to everyone who played this season, it was great watching you play, having a beer or just having a chat.

If I have missed anyone, I do apologise but I can’t mention everyone or everything that happened throughout the season. Thanks again to people who have supported or sponsored the club this season the club would not survive without your help and support. It is very much appreciated by everyone at the Cockburn Cricket Club.

As you will all know I will be stepping down as President, I hope that in the 2 years in the role I have been able to do the job that you elected me to do. I would like to congratulate Ranko Matic on being elected President for the 2014/2015 season, I hope that everyone gets behind Ranko and his committee and we continue to improve as a Club and all enjoy greater success at Davilak Oval.

COACHES REPORT I'd like to thank Gabe, the commitee, the Captains, our selectors and of course Lance Black for running the nets. These people are great servants of our club and their efforts are much appreciated as they made my job a lot easier. In addition to all who willingly put their hand up to help out at training your support is much appreciated.

I have to admit that when Gabe approched me to consider coaching again I eventually accepted the position with some reservations. It was only because of my belief in the people involved with Cockburn and a desire to ensure that we did not regress after previous hard work, that convinced me to take on the job. At seasons end I have no regrets and in fact I am more enthusiastic than ever about our future. We have a wonderful mix of youth blended with experience and our strong junior links ensure a prosperous future.

When you consider all of our top 4 grades either made a one day or a 75 over Grand final and our 3 One Day sides all finished in the top 4 you have to conclude that we are not far away from some sustained success. This is of course providing we are prepared to work hard and plan well!

Congratulations to Sandy Viti and the 4th Grade on their Premiership success and also to the 3rds on their One Day Grand Final success. The First Grade (One Day GF), Second Grade (75 over GF) and One Day C unfortunately went down in their respective Grand Finals. These sides did well to make it through and we can only improve from these experiences.

While the 1st Grade would be disappointed with their finish there were many positives to build on. Chris Scenini was outstanding with the ball while Chris Kercheval was a welcome addition to the club performing with both bat and gloves. Our captain Josh Pescud showed again what a great competitor he is leading the way with the bat. I look forward to seeing Josh firing with both bat and ball next season now that he has recovered from shoulder surgery. In addition we now have young players coming through the ranks who are ready to play 1st Grade cricket creating some healthy competition for positions in the side.

The development of the One Day F father/ son teams was a fantastic initiative that is already being followed by other clubs. Matthew (Chooky) Watson who has lead the CJCC in recent years, playing an important role in forging a strong relationship between the Juniors and the seniors deserves recognition here. Playing and training with the senior club is sure to benefit these boys and I have enjoyed watching their development. Of course there have been many players who have achieved impressive results over the course of the season and these have been recognised in the Captain reports. I value every players contribution and through the course of a season, endeavour to work with each on the way they approach the game. This is not always easy in such a big club but it is a good problem that I am happy to negotiate. We have many developing young leaders that I am keen to get involved leadership roles. This will ensure that we are well organised in both the short and long term.

In conclusion I'd like to once again thank the committee for the honour of coaching the Cockburn Cricket Club. The future is exciting and I look forward to the challenge ahead with great optimism.

1STGRADE REPORT

Firstly I would like to thank the out going President Gabe Puca on all his hard work during the past season, and all the support he afforded me in my role as captain of the A grade side.

It is a privilege to captain any grade in this club and a very illustrious honour to captain the A grade, so it is a position I do not take lightly. That is why this season was one of disappointment in many aspects this year.

As a team we were unable to achieve the success our abilities suggested we were capable of. As a team the one glaring thing that stood out for me was commitment. We as a team were unable to regularly train together. We had some regular players at training but many were quite irregular. We then struggled on match day as we were not as best prepared as we should have been. Individually the team has plenty of talent as seen by the seasons of some players. I believe to achieve success a larger commitment from the players to buy in and commit to all aspects will be needed.

We were able to make the One Day Grand Final this year after some good performances before Christmas. We unfortunately went down to a very strong East Fremantle side, but I don’t think we were to far away. They were just a little better in all facets of the game on the day and that was the difference. Our Two Day cricket was our Achilles heal this year and we struggled to be consistent in this area. We were unlucky in a couple of games where we lost by a run and another game where we tied, when one of our boys got ability mixed with ambition. This was our downfall as if we won those 2 games we would have played finals.

Individually the seasons of Chris Kercheval and our MVP Chris Scenini deserve special mention. Chris Kercheval came to the club this season and fitted in like he had been here for the past 5 years. His abilities with the bat are immense and many times during the season he was pummeling the attacks to all parts of the ground. Whilst unable to make a hundred this year it seems only a matter of time before he does, as his ability to score quickly is a highlight of his batting. He also is a very fine wicket keeper and his work behind the stumps this year was off a high standard, in particular to the spin of Chris Scenini.

Speaking of young Chris Scenini, he had an outstanding year with the ball in hand progressing into what I firmly believe to be the best spinner in A Grade. His ability to not only take but to tie down teams, is as a captain, a wonderful asset to have. Regularly he would come on and take key wickets as well as slow down the scoring and I believe he was instrumental in us making the One Day Final. Congratulations on the MVP award Chris.

To the other players who represented the club in A Grade I thank you for your efforts through out the year and your support. I believe this club has the talent to achieve great things in the near future.

2NDGRADE (SMCA 3RD) REPORT

Thank you to Fedele and the committee for giving me the opportunity of captaining this season, it is always a great honour to lead a Cockburn cricket side out to battle. I would like to give a big thanks Fedele who has always been a great support to me, to the extent that we nearly pulled off something special. Thank you to Chooky & Matt Ferraro for all their hard work at the selection table.

Always tough to take over as captain after a premiership (especially after an excellent thinker, motivator and extremely good looking predecessor {some licence may have been used here by the author and editor of the Yearbook}) but I was rapt with the way the boys went about it this year. There was no signs of compliancy, we played some great cricket through out the season and smashed a lot of sides. We put ourselves in a great position to defend our title only to falter on the final day of the season. This was a bitter pill to swallow, but the boys gave everything over the two days. I was really proud of the boys and I cannot fault our effort, unfortunately some poor execution let us down on the day.

One of the great positives of the year was our decision to go down the youth path and blood as many kids as possible. To have 6 players under 23, of which 5 were under 21, in our grand final side is a great sign for the future years. The best thing was that all of them have great character. Youth will never let you down; you know as captain you will get 100% effort. The feeling amongst the group was great all season and most importantly a lot of fun and enjoyment was had. I feel we were clearly the second best side all season and we really hit our peak after Christmas, winning 5 games in a row prior to the Grand Final. We only lost 4 games; unfortunately 3 of them were to CBC our grand final nemesis.

Congratulations to “Greg” Evans on winning the MVP Greg was outstanding this season, he took his game to another level after Christmas where he took three 6 for's in a row against quality opposition. He had a huge workload and never let me down, I am looking forward to Greggy taking plenty of wickets next year and beyond in A grade.

Looking at our side I think a lot our young guys will be playing A grade next season. Jaron Tuxford was a fantastic first year player, he bowled superbly well taking 38 wickets for the season. I was really impressed with some of our young batting talent. Marcel LaReservee at 18 has an outstanding temperament and is all class. I was really impressed with Jake Mirco, well bred (out of class stock), with great composure at the crease. Mitch Congleton kept very well all season and his batting developed as the season developed, he is one who will continue to improve. I expect Dan Aguiar and Mark Blinco to play more A grade games next year, with both having all the shots and both are very flexible by being able to bat anywhere in order.

A big thank you to my two Vice Captains; Hank Warchomji and Stan Koios (that good looking bloke that Nick was talking about earlier) both were great help and both batted very well. Also a couple of the other older boys, Jerry Pires opened the batting and a great person to have in the side. Johnny Braid is a good team man and his experience shone in both finals where he bowled very well.

My overriding emotion is one of disappointment at being so close to achieving something very special. But I’m happy in my heart that we gave it all we had, all year, and enjoyed each others company. I will work doubly as hard to ensure we will back next year to give it another big shake.

WITH LB As introduced last year our very own Lance Black unfortunately came second in a job interview which would have changed the course of both Australian and Cockburn History. Jules Lund beat our very own LB for the position of travel reporter or for the Channel 9 travel show “Getaway”. Due to popular demand we have asked our beloved LB to pen some more travel literary masterpieces.

I am regularly asked “where is my favourite holiday destination?”. Whilst Europe, the US and the Caribbean are all fantastic they can be expensive. That is why my current preference is Vietnam. We have twice had a month there in the last 2 years and love it. Last year we flew to Cambodia then cruised the Mekong into Vietnam. Here are a few of my reports on the trip.

Hi All,

Frank Sinatra sang about Chicago and said "it's my kind of place". I have been singing and humming it but have changed the location to Siem Reap. I'm glad I held off buying a $130 suitcase at Myers 50% sale. Picked out just what I wanted here yesterday. Man grabbed the calculator and input $55 then gave it to me. I put $40, he put 50, I put $45, deal done. We were both happy but maybe he still had me. I then walked to a small clothes stall. A little old grey headed man of about 80 said I have your size. He went to a closet as big as a loo and produced a wool bale sized bag full of Tommy Hilfiger polo shirts my size. Mrs B wouldn't let me have the red, mango, green, grey, peach or pink. I settled on 3 including a Dockers purple one. Then I noticed the $69 price tag. I immediately explained that I was more a $10 man. No 10 he said must pay 12 each and out came the calculator at $36. I pulled out 35 but he wouldn't budge. Poor old bloke I thought, can't rip him off a buck, probably needs it for food. I gave him 40 and he reached into his pocket for change. Out came a wad of notes Andrew Forrest would be proud of! We were both happy, maybe diddled again! Drinking and dining here is also "my kind of place". So far we have eaten at Pub St each night. It is more a precinct of bars and restaurants than one street. All restaurants are very reasonably priced. Last night we shared 6 spring rolls then I had a Khmer chicken curry. Nita had shrimp dish with noodles. I managed to scoff 3 pots and Nita had 2 gin and tonics, total $11. Transport is by remorks (tuk tuks) a motorbike that pulls a carriage / trailer. Great atmosphere as you travel in the open trailer with a multitude of motorbikes, cars, buses and remorks converging on you at all angles. Pretty safe though as all vehicles hardly exceed 20k in town. As in other Asian cities there’s only 1 traffic rule - there aren't any rules! Trips are $2 around town. Hotel room, pub, brekky all very good but I get stung around the pool - $1.80 for a can of beer and 2.50 a cocktail, which reminds me, time for a swim and beer. Off on Mekong cruise tomorrow, will really miss Siem Reap - ït's my kind of place!

Best regards

Blackie

Arun Swasiday everybloodies,

This morning we left Phnom Penh, the local guide says Plong Ping, headed for the Viet border. The boat's really good - cabin, food and especially service superb. Mrs B would like to be a deck higher but is happy with Fritzel's dungeon. We enquired about upgrading but when the tour manager quoted $1998 extra for a vacant suite I decided the dungeon would be quite suitable! I can't believe our little cabin boy. We had gear all over our dresser and chair. When we came back he had tidied everything up. Our phone charger and camera cords rolled up and tied, books/dvds neatly stacked, our sunnies lying side by side and my dirty washing folded neatly. Even my Reg Grundies neatly folded to one side. Poor little fella don't know how he managed it - I was waiting for nightfall to dispatch them into the Mekong.

After a couple of days visiting small villages and checking out local schools/orphanages etc we spent the last 2 nights at P Ping. No tv coverage on board so found a Pom and then an Aussie bar with Ashes on. It was in a real dilemma both nights - pay $1 for a beer and watch cricket or return to the boat and drink freebies. Night before last I spent a late night with "Murray" from Yanchep. Apart from being a Weegirl supportor is a good bloke. I think I got Nita to open the door at about 1ish. Funny how time flies when the scotch and cokes are free!

So it's farewell to Cambodia today as we spend the day "at sea". Just gone 11am and I am holding off til noon for first beer - some p pots are already at it. It has been great so far with highlights being the Ankor Wat temples and the smiling faces of the small kids. The smiling faces of the young ladies are also ok - many are absolute stunners. Yesterday we visited the killing fields and the infamous S21 prison - very moving.

Well qtr past and getting very thirsty, so may go up to pool deck. I like to have a beer before my red wine with lunch. Beers and spirits are local but wines with meals are international.

Regards Blackie (Low 30's here but humidity is very high)

Xing Chao.

I woke up Monday slightly under the weather after celebrating the Dockers superb thrashing of the Wee girls. Buy picking a margin of 26 pts I collected the huge sum of $15 by winning the on-board tipping comp. Must have been the blessing rec'd from a monk who said I would become wealthy!

As the day wore on I knew it was not “Hangover 4” but the dreaded Maykong Belly! As we prepared to fly to Da Lat the heavy rain set in and my reliance on close-by rest rooms increased. The flight was only 20mins to Da Lat but the torrential rain saw all flights delayed. We finally took off 20minutes late and the terrible pains in my tummy made me realise I was flying by the seat of my pants.

Then over the intercom came -"This is Captain Kevin speaking our flight time today will

32 COCKBURN CRICKET CLUB YEARBOOK 2013/2014

be 30 minutes" You bewdy I may just be able to last half an hour. After 15 mins we started to descend. At first there was a gentle sideways swaying, then we began to be violently shaken from one side to the other. Big Kev then explained there was a big storm at Da Lat so we would go into a 15min holding pattern. Now we were fiercely dropping up and down as well as to the side.

The girl over the aisle from us was the first to toss in the towel, by the time she was on her 2nd sick bag those in front and behind us had gone out in sympathy. The stench was a combination of Bali drains, Bangkok loos and the old Robbs Jetty abbs. Hang on you mob - I'm the one SICK here!

At last we started to descend; thru a small break in the clouds I could see a river and a huge mountain. At the same time Kev gunned it and the engines roared and we went vertically thru the turbulence again. I then heard a rattle of alfoil from next to me. The old Viet woman sitting cross legged who had picked at her toes all flight was now doing the biggest Chinese drawbacks you have ever heard. As we levelled out a reassuring Big Kev said "We had a look at an approach but the visibility is under 600ft which is way, way too low for us, so we are off to Cam Rahn Bay to fuel up and access the weather."

On landing the purser said "Remain seated and keep electronic equipment turned off". In Viet that meant that 290 of them scrambled for the toilets and rang home. After 40 or so mins Big Kev was excited "The cloud has lifted to 1600ft we're going in. After another frightening session going down thru the clouds Kev put her down on a three pence. The whole plane erupted into tumultuous applause.

Da Lat is quite lovely, very much French architecture, full of lakes, trees and gardens bursting with flowers. Much of the flowers and veges produced here are exported throughout Asia.

So thanks to Big Kev today I visited the flower garden and was able to smell the roses, which was quite fortunate as I was regaining some confidence to pass some small zephyrs.

Bye for now, Blackie

3RDGRADE (SMCA 5TH) REPORT

I'd like to begin by thanking everyone who played in the 3rds this year for their efforts. In what was a very similar season to last year, we finished on top of the One Day table before going on to win the Grand Final and second at seasons end before going down in a tight semi. It was disappointing to again lose a close final but there is no doubt that the experience will benefit the likes of Zac Overton, Sam Devereux, Steve Goodall, Kishan and Matthew Bowerman. It was pleasing to see these young players stand up at crucial times in matches throughout the season.

The mix of youth and experience was nicely balanced and playing together representing the CCC was an enjoyable experience. Once again Pippo Raffaele displayed his all round skills while Congo and Ev's showed they still have what it takes with the bat. Justin Micale was again a steadying influence with the ball and he was sorely missed in the semi final against CBC. Joe Covic was reliable behind the stumps despite suffering some from a suspect shoulder. It was also great to see the likes of Jaron Tuxford, Jake Mirco and Mark Blinco come through the 3rds before securing spots in the 2nd Grade Grand Final.

Id like to make special mention of Peter Firth who continued to display a positive attitude to the game despite being the guy who was hovering between 3rds and 4ths. His efforts in the semi against CBC were outstanding. Playing with people like Peter makes you want to come back year after year because they always give 100 % and they play for the right reasons!

Sam Devereux's showed that he will eventually be an A Grade bowler for this club as he continually improves. His 7 wickets against Hilton in the final game was a great reward for his efforts but it was his ability through out the season to extract key wickets that was most impressive. Zac Overton showed form with both bat and ball but particularly impressed with the bat in tight situations. Steve Goodall is certainly an all round talent and will only improve as hr gains experience and confidence. Kishan as we all know can be devastating on his day and if he can find consistency somewhere near his best he will be a big asset to this club.

A big thanks to Justine and Mr Overton for their support all season. It would have been nice to make it to the big one for you guys. Also to all my team mates for always taking responsibility to set up for the days play and in taking on umpiring and scoring duties. It certainly made my job easier.

I look forward to next season playing with our great club. It has always been a pleasure Captaining and again I thank all for your support.

GET INKED! The Cockburn Cricket Club is pleased to announce that it will be providing all members with free tattoo design consultations. Sam Devereux has been appointed lead designer and is very excited about providing this new service to our members. Sam caught up with an undisclosed reporter for the Cockburn Yearbook to explain more about the role and what it entailed.

41 COCKBURN CRICKET CLUB YEARBOOK 2013/2014

4THGRADE (SMCA 6TH) REPORT

For me personally the 2013/14 Season will be remembered as one of my most enjoyable season I’ve had at the CCC. Not just from the success we had on the field, but for the heart and spirit the boys showed on and off the field. Young guys like Mike and Adam Cimetta, Jace Vodanovich and Mark Matkovich who were always there on time, keen to help, keen to learn and keen to be successful.

The Season started with a rained out draw against Armadale. My side was made up of inexperience young boys that I had met the first time and boy did I think this was going to be a long…..season.

By the fourth game the side had started to take shape with some old heads joining the side, this formed the base of a side that played in two Grand Finals and only lost two games all season.

The One Day final against Leeming was always going to be a challenge, and especially at their home ground. Chasing and losing by 16 runs was a good effort by the boys. It just wasn’t our day. The disappointment the team felt that day I’m sure only made us hungry for the main prize.

We finished the season by winning the last two games outright (thanks Mitch who stepped in as Captain). This allowed us to finish on top of the ladder and home finals. The Semi against Willetton started a little harder than we expected with a few anxious moments felt by all. We won by 170 odd runs. Stand out performances with the bat: Adam Cimetta (60), Clinton Mitchell (43), Steve Camarda (68), and Jace Vodanovich (61) including 5 big sixes. Stand outs with the ball: Tony Radevski 4/34, Mark Matkovich 3/21.WE SMASHED EM.

The 6th grade competition was dominated by Cockburn and Leeming all season, so it was fitting that we played off in a grand final. This time it was at our home of cricket, DAVALAK. Winning the toss and scoring 173 off the full 75 over’s was a fantastic effort from all the boys as we all dug deep with 20 and 30 run partnerships. Rolling Leeming for 114 didn’t reflect on how tough it was on field, it drew the best out of our bowlers and fielders. Great spells from Max Wason 14 over’s 2/19, Tony Radevski 10 over’s 0/18, Clinton Mitchell 10 over’s 4/27 and finally Anthony Ricci whose15.2 over’s 4/46 earned him the man of the match. Great win boys. One I’ll never forget.

Standout performances this year were Matt Ferraro with 3 tons and a 99, Adam Cimetta with a hundred against Armadale and Peter Firth smashing a ton against Willetton and taking 6/26. Also the emergence of young guys like the Cimetta boys with the gloves, Jace with the bat and Mark’s off spin. These guys will definitely be playing higher grades in the future. Special thanks to Mitch, Steve, Ferraro, Gabe, the committee, and Fedele for their help this season.

The ladder will show that we ended up with 11 wins, 1 draw and 7 losses. Prior to 21st December we were 3 wins, 1 draw and 6 losses, really not a great position. From the 21st December until the 8th March (semi final) we won 9 out of our 10 games, including the semi Final against Southern River.

The reason we had such a great streak was not only because we played some great cricket, it was because we had a solid team, and we played as a team, playing for each other. Who would’ve thought that simply sitting together after a game (Circle of Death!) and having a couple of beers would see us go from an average team sitting out of the 4, to a team that could really contend for the flag. Game after game someone else would stand up, we didn’t rely on one particular person to get the job done, everyone had a role and everyone stood up at some point.

We had previously played Southern River 3 times in the season, lost against them twice and won once (they dropped their entire team against us to held qualify their ODD). Quite simply, we were not expected to win the Semi Final, Slug on the radio ( a life member of Cockburn!), wrote us off, saying that Southern River were shoe ins. Slug didn’t realise the team spirit that we had, and the will to win for each other.

We won the toss and batted, and Southern bowled exceptionally, Cam and Robbie opened and were told their job was to see off the good bowlers and be no more than 2 down after 20. After 20 we were 0/60 odd, with Cam on 8 and Robbie on 41, couldn’t ask for a better start. Gareth came in and hit a quick fire 27 when it was really needed, with contributions from Matt Jones (10) Dan Meredith (10, and ran out Mick Cimetta… dog). At 7/129 we were in an average position, Sav and Hally came together and put on 17, Sav with 15 of them. A total of 8/148 was something we felt we could bowl at. We had them 1/23 when Gareth ripped their openers stump out of the ground (not bad for someone that can’t bowl junior!). Southern put a partnership together and were 2/79 when hally pulled his finger out and bowled some deadly heat. Hally took their opener, number 3, and number 4 in quick succession to have them 4/95. Enter Sav, who in what can only be described as an interesting spelling of bowling, took 4/14 off 5 overs, with Travy chiming in with 2/8 off 4. The Southern River shuffle (coined by Danzy) was in full effect. Southern lost 9/40, or 6/10, to be bundled out for 119. The way everyone chipped in with the ball, or with some speccy catches, again proved that when we play as a team and stand up, we will win most games of cricket.

We went in unchanged against Thornlie in the GF, and loss the toss and were asked to bowl. Couldn’t ask for a better start when Beezy and Jonesy had both openers caught slogging off the bowling of Grat. Some excellent tight bowling restricted them to 3/39, then to 4/44 at Drinks. Not long after hally made another breakthrough to have them 5/49, Grat snared another and had them 6/77. Unfortunately things went downhill from there, some average bowling, poor fielding and some “dropping of the heads” from some players, meant that Thornlie were able to recover, when they should have been rolled for under 120. Thornlie ended up with 187 off their 40, well bowled to Hally 2/13 off 8, BJ 1/13 off 8, and Grat 3/43 off 7. Chasing 188 we knew if we batted our 40 and had wickets in hand after 20 that we would be a big chance. Being 3/18 with Cam LBW, Robbie and Gareth bowled, 50 COCKBURN CRICKET CLUB YEARBOOK 2013/2014

wasn’t the greatest of starts, all credit to their opening bowlers though. Mick Cimetta and Dan Meredith came together, saw out the openers; however another mini collapse saw us at 7/51. All season Trav Seclier has had a never say die attitude, and he wasn’t about to give up, Trav put on 44 for the last wicket with Alex Gratwick, to move us from 8/85 to all out for 129. It’s a credit to Trav that he stood up and stuck it up the Thornlie boys, hitting some big sings, when they thought the game was won, ending up with 56 not out. All credit must go to Thornlie, whose lower order batted exceptionally, and who all bowled very well to win their flag. Thornlie were deserved winners, played the game in the right spirits all season, including the final, and thoroughly deserved their win.

All season we had some simple rules for our team, with the Bat it was to back ourselves, and bat the 40 overs. With the Ball it was to bowl full and straight, not bowling short or giving away extras, and in the field it was to support each other the whole time we were out there, keep the talk up, hold our catches and back each other – I can honestly say that the boys did this to the best of their abilities, and would be a huge reason why our post-Christmas turnaround was so successful. Post-Christmas we averaged only 10 extras per game (most being leg byes), however in the GF we bowled 37 extras… that hurts!

As far as individuals are concerned we had some great contributions throughout the season. It was great to have 11 boys play 9 games or more, 5 of them 15 or more in ODA. Dan Meredith 468 runs @ 36, consistently coming in at 5 and building our to something respectable, add to that 4 wickets (@ 64… wow) 4 catches and 2 run outs. Robbie Murdoch 422 runs @ 30 & 7 wickets. The big unit Matty Jones 275 runs @ 25, Cam Oxford 251 runs @ 16, Travy Seclier 245 runs @ 23, along with 27 wickets and 9 catches. Someone we missed, but was sensational before his trip back to Zim was Burty, Burty hit 449 runs @ 37, and took 16 wickets @ 20. Burty is all class, and was a huge loss for the finals, its fair to say we can’t wait to see him back! Bowling wise was great to see Travy get some results late in the year. Trav was far and above one of our best bowlers, who would bowl exactly where he was told, regularly coming on in the 26th over to finish the innings off, Trav ended up with 27 wickets at 18, a solid season! Hally played the last 10 games in a row for us, and stormed home with 23 wickets at 11. Was great to see the Sazz find some late form and took 8 wickets in 3 games, to end up with 16 @ 16. A youngster with a lot of promise is Alex Gratwick, this kid will play A grade for Cockburn someday, he has a great action, bowls with a decent pace and can move the ball, it was great having Grato in the side for the latter part of the year, he’s a great kid (he reckons he is a man, but he’s not) and took 12 wickets at 15 – Grato, if you can sort your front foot issues out you will dominate this competition! I ended up with 33 wickets at 14. Last but certainly not least was Camo, Cam hit over 250 runs, and took 18 catches and 4 stumpings. Cam was the rock of our side, opening, and with his chat and banter in the field. Cam you’re a gun keeper, and you give your all with the bat – couldn’t ask for much more!

All in all, it was a great season, my highlights would have been the Semi against Southern, seeing all the boys stand up and be counted when it really mattered, and us playing as a team post-Christmas, it made the game so much more enjoyable, I’m sure the rest of the boys would say the same!

It’s disappointing that we did not get the win in the GF, but if we play like we did for the second half of the season again, I’ve got no doubt we can go one better next season.

ONE DAY C GRADE

The One Day C season got off to an almost erection building start! Passing East Fremantle’s 208, 5 down with plenty of overs to go was, what I thought a sign of real potential, Luke McCulloch (48) Wade WG (59) and a ‘One Night Only’ appearance from Dave Jackovich (53) had my old heart a flutter as I watched the disbelieving reaction on the faces of the East Fremantle team as another ball went to the boundary, in Jacko’s case, over the boundary. I am not sure, but I think I noticed what might have been a rye smile on Rowdy’s face as we raced to a very credible total of 6/243, then again I might have been seeing things! I must admit after round one being coerced, as captain of the One Day C’s in Ranko’s early absence didn’t seem like a bad gig.

From round 2 on though, the emotional rollercoaster that we call cricket gathered momentum. Our season was filled with numerous forfeits (grateful for the points), some credible highs and some very very forgetful lows. In spite of the many potentials and could-have beens, the team stuck it out, week after week, enjoyed the odd victory, lamented losses (the close ones anyway) and, I think we would prefer to forget the rectum widening floggings dished out by some of our opposition throughout the season. Now, don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t all-bad, we did manage to play some good, very competitive and at times entertaining cricket, with numerous highlights that brought about smiles and even raucous cheer.

Luke McCulloch’s gritty 101 not out against Hilton Palmyra in round 5 was one such highlight, then there was Luke Ryan’s bowling debut, a very impressive 5/27, he then experienced a wicket drought, so he decided to be a wicket keeper instead for most of the season, he did hand the gloves back in the final game of the season to bowl again, taking 3/25, Luke was also a very handy and competent opening bat. Wade WG showed early promise and entertainment with back-to-back half century’s in the first two games, only to disappear for much of the season after being elevated to the lofty heights of the grades above us in the club pecking order. As the true champion he is, Ranko started his season with an impressive 5/7 off 8 overs in round 6 against Leeming. PTT, Cam Shepard and Vaggsie were gallant warriors with the ball, at times not being rewarded with more wickets for their toil. Jay Goddin, Alex Rivers started to hit their straps by season end and will be champions in the future.

Beating Armadale in the last game of the year was by far the pinnacle of the season for me. The game was filled with raw emotion, tension, grit and tenacity, a game that played out to the very last over of the day; even a verbal joust over the virtues of sportsman-like sledging added to the intensity of the game. Everything seamed to go to our way; bowlers bowled with purpose without many sundries, catchers caught and fielders pounced on the ball like a seagull diving on a stray chip outside of Cicerellos, for the fist time in the season we were able to have Armadale all out under 200. John Trowbridge and Luke Ryan provided the much-needed firepower with 3 wickets apiece. Rowdy put his incessant pleasantry and happy demeanour to one side and demonstrated his real leadership qualities in the field with well thought out field placements and well timed bowling changes in the end they posted a very gettable 181. Our batting, which hadn’t seen much depth since round one started to jell, runs came slowly to start and with 10 or so overs to go we needed more than a run a ball. Bring on Johnny Trowbridge, his 53 not out got us over the line in the very last over to secure forth spot and a place in the finals.

60 COCKBURN CRICKET CLUB YEARBOOK 2013/2014

So finishing in 4th place at the end of the home and away rounds and playing in a final was something I had never expected at the start of the season but warmly enjoyed, especially with the very much appreciated leadership and help from Ranko, Rowdy, Luke M, Wade, PTT and Lui and the other 30 cavaliers selected in the One day C’s this year, it is hard to mention all and sundry, so I apologise if I have missed a highlight or two. In a year of ups and downs it has been a pleasure to play alongside old and new friends alike.

ONE DAY F GRADE(S)

I would like to thank the club for the opportunity to be able to captain the ODF grade this year, which was essentially a father / son team made up of the majority of the boys from the U17s and fathers. The sheer numbers and success of the club however also enabled a second team, Cockburn (2), to be included in the competition mid season with the withdrawal of Leeming. The ODF (2) team provided the opportunity for more players to get a game each week which was a fantastic result for them and the club.

The main objective of the ODF team was to introduce the junior U17s players to senior cricket and allow a group of fathers to play in the team with the boys whilst we were still able to play and before the boys shot up the club grades in the future. I think we achieved that objective of introducing the boys to senior cricket and exceeded all expectations on our performances along the way.

Having the U17s boys train with the senior club certainly makes the job easier from a coaching perspective and the boys really get a sense of what it takes to be able to play at the next level. The guys at the club also do an excellent job a providing coaching and mentoring for the boys to help with their game and that really stood out this season. A particular mention must go out to Adam O’Neil and Jake Mirco for helping out in this area. Their leadership qualities and desire to challenge and improve the boys is a credit to them and demonstrates the characteristics and ethos we try to instil at the club.

Cricket can be tough on the body if you haven’t played in a while or in some of the fathers playing for the first time. Returning to the game after some considerable time away from the game was Tony Cianfarani, Peter Sumich, Martyn Ferris, Norm Jones, Rob Santich and Claude (Rhino) Merindino. Some new fathers to take to the field for the club the first time were Vince Santaromita, Mike Gillespie, Mark Sattell and Jason Goncalves. The fathers held up pretty well and put in some really credible performances in the end, with Peter Sumich taking out SMCA batting average and Matt Watson taking the batting aggregate; however there wasn’t much complaining when the season was over. You guys were great and you deserve a well earned rest over the off-season.

There were many positives and a highlight during the season, of particular mention was the Cockburn v Cockburn (2) game which the club and association allowed us to play on the last Sunday before Christmas at Davilak. To have official umpires in Graham (Slug) Santich and Lance (LB ) Black and a pretty healthy home ground support provided all the ingredients for a great days cricket at Davilak. We also had some fine innings from Peter Sumich with a century and valuable contributions and partnerships from Tony Cianfarani, Rob Santich, Daniel Santich, Alec Radonich, Mason Gillespie, Kane Santaromita and Matt Sattell. Zane Sumich, Andrew Cianfarani, Dylan Watson and Cameron Jones all had some great spells throughout the year with the ball.

It was disappointing to get knocked out of the semi-final after only losing two games all season and finishing on top of the ladder. The boys hopefully learnt a valuable lesson about playing senior cricket finals and now know what to expect under pressure.

I truly believe we have some potential future 1st grade players in our 17s and from these boys. It is important that the boys continue to develop and play the best possible cricket they can whilst still enjoying the game. In order to continue to develop as cricketers the boys need to progress to two-day cricket. 66 COCKBURN CRICKET CLUB YEARBOOK 2013/2014

It’s been a wonderful experience to have the opportunity to take to the field with my son, the boys that I have coached for many seasons now and a fantastic bunch of fathers who I know have also valued the chance to play in a team with their sons.

I hope we can get back together again in some way next year – if our bodies hold up!

Thanks for the opportunity.

COCKBURN CRICKET CLUB YEARBOOK 2013/2014

PINK STUMP DAY During the Sydney Test earlier this year the station crossed to the McGrath Foundation during the lunch break and it was at that point that our Pink Stumps Day events originated. Saturday 22nd February – Cockburn Cricket Club Pink Stumps Day and Pink Stumps High Tea resulted in an amazing $3,005.55 being raised for the McGrath Foundation to help place more McGrath Breast Care Nurses in communities across Australia to assist women and their families on the breast cancer journey.

We had donations from the following wonderful Consultants; Business owners and generous folk.:  TUPPERWARE – HEATHER  POSTIE FASHION – SUZANNE  EVENTS MARQUEE – COCKBURN McCANCE DAWSON HIRE  NUTRIMETICS – SHIRLEY GREEN  PARTYLIGHT – NAT CLARK  COOGEE BAKERY - JACQUI & ANNETTE FITZPATRICK  RED DOT – HENRY ATTURO  REMO’S QUALITY MEATS,  ARBONNE – NANCY HOURANI  TERRI SANTORO COOGEE – REMO VITI  MAVICAS CREATIONS – MARIA  IGA – HAMILTON HILL  THE CHEESECAKE SHOP, MAVICA  COLES – BOORAGOON SPEARWOOD – BEN  LORRAINE LEE LINEN – CHANTAL  MR & MRS LOGAN HOWLETT  GRAPHIX PLUS – DAVID PEAKE KENT & ANGELA ANNESE  THE CHEESECAKE SHOP,  VITAL PLASTICS – BIBRA LAKE  ENVY JEWELLERY – BRADY SPEARWOOD SINCLAIR  THE GATE BAR & BISTRO – TROY  ENJO – MILI GANDOSSI GRIFFIN

The Cockburn Junior Cricket Club Under 14’s also did a whip around at their game during the morning and produced $223.45 towards our total. A HUGE thank you for their effort!

It was a great day with lots of women attending, brewed tea, champagne a-plenty, way too much food (much to the delight of the players), raffles and games with Lisa Camarda producing an amazing 12 items out of 15 from her handbag! We also had the honour of a Guest Speaker, a remarkable and courageous woman - Anni Richardson - whose emotionally powerful talk left many in tears and all of us little more aware.

My personal thanks to: Danni Carabetta, Louise Russell, Lecia Horton, Sheena Kodituwakku; Leanne Santaromita; Lee Watson; Keara (our high school volunteer),Leanne Mirco and Lisa Camarda who assisted in a myriad of ways. THANK YOU LADIES

Special thanks to Carlos, Gabe and PTT for their input in setting up, helping out on the day and packing up after the event – love your work lads!

Let’s see how much we can raise next year! Sue Aguiar 76
