THE STATION MASS

You will notice in this week’s “PARISH DIARY” that there is a Mass planned for Saturday next at 2.30pm in the home of Noreen Bannister, Glann. This follows from an invitation issued some months ago to consider the possibility of having Mass in your home for The Year of Faith. It was an idea of the Pastoral Council and sought to re-ignite this tradition of having, from time to time, Masses in homes throughout the parish. It is a good and noble idea. We thank Noreen for accepting the invitation and pray that it will be a blessed and prayerful experience for all who attend.

There have been many Masses offered in homes throughout the parish over the years. Quite often they are central to a family’s celebration of some event or other. Indeed, as I write these lines, I am reminded of one such Mass a few months ago to celebrate Padraig Horan’s Birthday and it was a special and I’m sure remembered occasion (I was sorry to learn of his death earlier this week and pray that he rest in peace). There is something so appropriate about inviting the Lord to the “hearth” and table of the family home. It seems so right that the family table becomes an Altar and that the same table that nourishes the family with the daily meal becomes the resting place and birth place of the Eucharist. It is a practice to be commended and, again, we extend an invitation to all who would like to celebrate Mass in their homes, either as a Station Mass or to celebrate a significant family moment, to let us know. When and where possible we will be happy to oblige.

This “welcoming” of Jesus is central to the Gospel message this weekend when Martha and Mary welcome him to their home. Their welcome is two-fold: Martha in the kitchen and Mary at his side - one working tirelessly to prepare food and the other reflecting on his word and message. There is, of course, a bit of rivalry but only to make a point. The “listening” Mary was needed but so too the “working” Martha. It is somewhere in the mix of the two we are called to live our faith, to travel our journey and to make a difference. Rtin Friday: 10am - 4.30pm, Saturday: 2.30pm.

12.00 – 3pm, Sunday: 11am – 1pm, Admission free. All are welcome.
