This is a nostalgic and delicious homage to a drinking era that is gone but not forgotten. The book collects and codifies what was then an oral tradition of recipes from the early days of cocktails, including some of his own creations; the guide lays down the principles for formulating mixed drinks of all categories. Jeremiah Jerry P. Thomas was an American bartender; because of his pioneering work in popularizing cocktails across the United States, he is considered "the father of American mixology. As such, he was often nicknamed "Professor" Jerry Thomas. Thomas was born in in Sackets Harbor, New York. While in California he worked as a bartender, gold prospector and minstrel show manager. He moved back to New York City inwhere he opened a saloon below Barnum's American Museum; it would be the first of four saloons he would run in New York City over his lifetime. After a time running his first bar he went on the road for several years, working as the head bartender at hotels and saloons in St. At one point he toured Europe, carrying along a set of solid-silver bar tools. He was well known for his showmanship as a bartender: he developed elaborate and flashy techniques of mixing cocktails, sometimes while juggling bottles, cups and mixers. He often wore flashy jewelry and had bar tools and cups embellished with precious stones and metals. Upon returning to New York City, he became head bartender at the Metropolitan hotel before opening his most famous bar on Broadway, between 21st and 22nd Streets, in Thomas was one of the first to display the work of Thomas Nast, and in his famous saloon he hung caricatures of the political and theatrical figures; one or the Bon Vivants Companion drawing, now lost, was of Thomas "in nine tippling postures colossally". He died in New York City of apoplexy in at the age of His death was marked by substantial obituaries across the United States. In their obituary, The New York Times noted Thomas was "at one time better known to club men and men about town than any other bartender in this city, and he was very popular among all classes. Mayor Durrell Comes Upon the Brandy-Cocktail Edward Henry Durrell (July 14, 1810 – March 29, 1887) was A Harvard educated New Englander, born in New Hampshire, who became the 25th mayor of New Orleans in 1863. Mayor Edward H. Durrell Fluent in German, French and Spanish, Durrell read law at Harvard to enter the Bar in 1834. After a brief law practice in Mississippi, he moved to New Orleans at the beginning on 1836 and by 1854 was a member of the City Council. In 1845, Harper & Brothers published his book, New Orleans as I found it, under the pen name H. Didimus. It is comprised of a number of ―sketches of some of the incidents‖ he experienced on his ―first visit to New Orleans, in the winter of 1835- 36,‖ one of which was learning about one of the city‘s brandy cocktails: ―Now the difference between a brandy-cocktail and a brandy-toddy,‖ he wrote, ―is this: a brandy-toddy is made by adding together a little water, a little sugar, and a great deal of brandy - mix well and drink. A brandy-cocktail is composed of the same ingredients, with the addition of a shade of Stoughton‘s bitters; so that the bitters draw the line of demarcation.‖ We immediately observe from the above narrative that, if Mayor Durrell recalled his facts correctly, the ―brandy-cocktail‖ was available in the Crescent City in the winter of 1835-36, a good two years before Antoine Amédée Peychaud opened his Royal Street apothecary in 1838.

I had already sucked down a slew of pineapple-leaf garnished and flaming aromatic creations, and I needed a moment to comprehend the expanse of history that I was experiencing. The bartender smiled through the jazz music playing quietly as he gently stirred the simple concoction I had ordered. Long after my party had left, as the condensation trickled down my glass, I sipped my cocktail. Not only did I drink, but I reveled in the 160 or more years of distinctly American cultural history I held in my hand (Regan 331). But there was something more than simply the sweetened liquor that intrigued me: the mythos surrounding it. While the origin of the word “cocktail” is highly disputed, we do know the word was making its rounds through the Americas by 1806. On May 13 of that year, a reader wrote to the Balance and Columbian Repository paper of Hudson, New York to inquire as to the nature of a cocktail. In response, the paper proposed that a “cocktail is a stimulating liquor, composed of spirits of any kind, sugar, water, and bitters—it is vulgarly called a bittered sling” (Regan 4). While the term “cocktail” was floating around, the story of its origin had a foggy haze surrounding it.
