Professor of Teaching, Associate Head of Biology Department of Botany, Faculty of Science Charles Edwin Bessey Teaching Award

Shona Ellis completed her BSc (1985) in botany and MSc (1993) in natural products chemistry at the University of British Columbia. As a faculty member in the UBC Botany

Department since 1994, she has taught courses ranging from first year biology to graduate-level plant biology. She is active in the scholarship of teaching and learning with numerous publications and presentations in botany, e-portfolio, and sustainability education. As Associate Head of Biology, she participated in curriculum restructuring of the Biology Specialization and continues to work toward improving student advising, integrating sustainability into undergraduate education, and participating in UBC’s Flexible Learning Initiative. Ms. Ellis was recently promoted to Professor of Teaching. She was twice awarded the UBC Killam Teaching Prize, and has received an award from the Society of Canadian Women in Science and Technology for her efforts promoting women in STEM.

Board of Governors Meeting – November 2013 Maja Krzic Associate Professor Faculty of Land & Food Systems / Faculty of Forestry AWSS Mentoring Award (Association for Women Soil Scientists) After completing her BSc and MSc degrees in her native Yugoslavia, Maja Krzic pursued her doctoral studies at UBC, receiving her PhD in 1997. She currently teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in soil science.

Dr. Krzic’s research interests include the application of information technology in soil science education, rehabilitation of degraded forest soils, and the impacts of forest grazing on soil quality. In 2004, she initiated the Virtual Soil Science Learning Resources Consortium, a Canada-wide initiative which has established an award-winning record of cooperation in the development of educational materials.

For her innovative efforts in teaching, Maja has received the UBC Killam Teaching Prize, the North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture (NACTA) Teaching Award of Merit, and Soil Science for Society Award by the Canadian Soil Science Society.

The AWSS Mentoring Award recognizes Maja’s significant contributions to the education, professional growth, and achievement of many females in soil science.

Mark MacLachlan

Professor, Chemistry (Faculty of Science) Rutherford Memorial Medal in Chemistry The Royal Society of Canada

Congratulations to Dr. Mark MacLachlan who is the recipient of the 2013 Rutherford Memorial Medal in Chemistry from the Royal Society of Canada. The Rutherford Memorial Medals were established in 1980 by the RSC and are awarded for outstanding research in any branch of physics and chemistry and in recognition of Lord Rutherford’s own research carried out in Canada at a relatively young age.

Dr. MacLachlan’s research and teaching interests include Supramolecular Chemistry, Materials Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry and Organic Chemistry. He has made significant contributions to the field of Supramolecular Chemistry, which focuses on molecules whose shape and properties allow them to self- assemble into new materials. His research breakthroughs have produced truly novel materials that have applications in electronics, photonics and catalysis. Some of his projects have been aimed at optimizing alternative energy applications and combating environmental problems.

Dr. MacLachlan received his B.Sc. (Hons.) at the University of British Columbia and his Ph.D. at the University of Toronto. He is also a recipient of many prestigious awards such as UBC’s Killam Faculty Research Prize and NSERC’s E.W.R. Steacie Memorial Fellowship.

NOV 2013 APPLIED SCIENCE — Electrical & Computer Mesbah, Ali - Assistant Professor Prof. Mesbah received the Best Paper Award at the 13th Engineering International Conference on Web Engineering for the paper titled "Hidden-Web Induced by Client-Side Scripting: An Empirical Study". NOV 2013 APPLIED SCIENCE — Electrical & Computer Krishnamurthy, Vikram - Professor Prof. Krishnamurthy has received an honorary degree from the Engineering KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden.

NOV 2013 APPLIED SCIENCE — Electrical & Computer Salcudean, Tim - Professor Prof. Salcudean has been elected Fellow of the Medical Image Engineering Computing and Computer Aided Interventions Society (MICCAI) for his outstanding contribution to the field of biomedical engineering. NOV 2013 APPLIED SCIENCE — Mechanical Engineering Altintas, Yusuf - Professor Prof. Altintas has received the Doctor Honoris Causa from the Budapest University of Technology and Economics.

NOV 2013 APPLIED SCIENCE — Mechanical Engineering Altintas, Yusuf - Professor Prof. Altintas has had his NSERC Industrial Research Chair (with Pratt and Whitney Canada) renewed. This renewal is quite unique; normally IRCs are limited to two five-year terms, but NSERC decided, in view of Professor Altintas’ stature and PWC’s continuing financial commitment, to allow the IRC to continue for a third term. NOV 2013 APPLIED SCIENCE — Mechanical Engineering Altintas, Yusuf - Professor Prof. Altintas has received the ASME Blackall Machine Tool and Gage Award from the American Society of Mechanical Engineering for his paper titled “Discrete-Time Prediction of Chatter Stability, Cutting Forces and Surface Location Errors in Flexible Milling Systems” published in the Journal of Manufacturing Science and Engineering , Vol. 134, pp. 061006, 2012. NOV 2013 APPLIED SCIENCE — School of Nursing Boschma, Geertje - Associate Professor Prof. Boschma has received the Mary Adelaide Nutting Award from the American Association for the History of Nursing for the outstanding research and writing of her article Community mental health nursing In Alberta, Canada: An oral history .

NOV 2013 APPLIED SCIENCE — School of Nursing Saewyc, Elizabeth - Professor Prof. Saewyc has been named a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences - one of the highest honours for individuals in the Canadian health sciences community. The criteria requires that the individual be a world-class scholar and have demonstrated considerable leadership and professional service engagement beyond his or her own research.

NOV 2013 APPLIED SCIENCE — School of Engineering Hewage, Kasun - Associate Professor Prof. Hewage has been recognized for authoring one of the Top 25 published papers in the journal of Building and Environment in 2012 - one of the top journals in the field.

NOV 2013 APPLIED SCIENCE — School of Engineering Sadiq, Rehan - Professor Prof. Sadiq has been recognized by ScienceDirect as authoring one of the Top 25 papers of 2012 published in the Journal of Loss Prevention in the Process Industries for the article "Risk Analysis for Oil and Gas Pipelines: A sustainability assessment approach using fuzzy based bow-tie analysis." NOV 2013 ARTS - Anthropology Robertson, Leslie - Assistant Professor Prof. Robertson is the joint recipient with Kwagu'l Gixsam Clan for the Wheeler-Voegelin Prize for their book, "Standing Up with Ga’axsta’las: Jane Constance Cook and the Politics of Memory, Church, and Custom." With this most innovative work, Robertson and the Gixsam Clan collectively write a book that will "quickly become a methodological model for ethnohistorians." The Wheeler-Voegelin Prize is given by the American Society for Ethnohistory. NOV 2013 ARTS - Art History, Visual Art & Theory Smith, T'ai - Assistant Professor Prof. Smith has been awarded a Fellow of the International Department Research Center for Cultural Technologies and Media Philosophy (IKKM) at the Bauhaus-Universität, Weimar, Germany, for Summer Term 2014. Prof. Smith's article on the Bauhaus Weaving Workshop brought her to the attention of the IKKM and she was invited to take up this fellowship to share her research on textile media and at the same time to have an opportunity to pursue further her research in the context of an international and interdisciplinary group of scholars. NOV 2013 ARTS - Geography Peck, Jamie - Professor Prof. Peck has been elected Fellow, Royal Society of Canada (Academy of Social Sciences) Prof. Peck of is one of the most prolific and highly cited geographers in the world. His main contributions have been in labour studies, urban political economy, and critical policy analysis, including a long-term program of research on the free-market ideology of neoliberalism. He is a leading advocate for institutionally and spatially sensitive analysis across the social and economic sciences. " NOV 2013 ARTS - History Brook, Timothy - Professor Prof. Brook has been elected Fellow, Royal Society of Canada (Academy of the Arts and Humanities) Prof. Brook is a considered an outstanding historian of early modern China in the English-speaking world. His books on this subject have won numerous prizes and been translated into many languages. A globally renowned Canadian Sinologist, Brook has also written important books about the politics of twentieth-century China."

NOV 2013 ARTS - Philosophy Thompson, Evan - Professor Prof. Thompson has been elected Fellow, Royal Society of Canada (Academy of the Arts and Humanities) Prof. Thompson is considered a central figure in modern understandings of the nature of consciousness. His groundbreaking work brings perspectives from phenomenology, cognitive science, and Buddhism to bear on what has been described as the most difficult problem in the philosophy of mind."

This award is made annually to an individual who, in the opinion of the selection committee, has made a significant contribution to the study of brain behaviour and NOV 2013 ARTS - Psychology Department Schaller, Mark - Professor Prof. Schaller has been awarded the Gordon Allport Intergroup Relations Prize from the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues - Awarded to the best paper or article of the year on intergroup relations -- in this case, an article by Mark Schaller and Steven L. Neuberg with the title "Danger, disease, and the nature of prejudice(s)" (published in 2012 in *Advances in Experimental Social Psychology*). NOV 2013 EDUCATION - Department of Language and Kendrick, Maureen - Associate Professor Prof Kendrick was a co-recipient of the 2013 Alan C. Purves Literacy Education Award for their article, “New Literacies in a Rural Kenyan Girls’ Secondary School Journalism Club” by Research in the Teaching of English. The Alan C. Purves Award is presented annually to the author(s) of the Research in the Teaching of English article from the previous year's volume judged as likely to have the greatest impact on educational practice. Education NOV 2013 LAND AND FOOD SYSTEMS Krzic, Maja - Associate Professor Association for Women Soil Scientists (AWSS) has awarded Dr. Maja Krzic with the 2013 AWSS Mentoring Award. This award recognizes her significant contributions to the education, professional growth, and achievement of may females in soil science. Nominations from past students and colleagues, who were greatly influence by Dr. Krzic in their soils education and careers, played a large part in the committee's unanimous decision.

NOV 2013 MEDICINE - Medicine Eva, Kevin - Professor Honorary Fellowship from the Academy of Medical Educators for 2013; highest award bestowed on exceptional individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to both medical education and to the Academy. NOV 2013 PHARMACEUTICAL Wasan, Kishor - Professor Dr. Wasan received the award for outstanding performance SCIENCES as an AAPS Student Chapter Faculty Advisor for 2012- 2013, from the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists.

NOV 2013 EDUCATION - Language Leggo, Carl - Professor UBC Killam Mentoring Award and Literacy Education NOV 2013 EDUCATION - Department Jan Hare - Associate Professor Appointed to Professorship in Indigenous Education for of Language and Literacy Teacher Education. The new Professorship role is a key Education legacy project arising from the Year of Indigenous Education initiative and its goals are to enrich teacher education with Indigenous perspectives, histories and pedagogies, and to engage in the professional development of practicing teachers and faculty to strengthen Indigenous education and approaches in current teaching. NOV 2013 MEDICINE - Medicine Jamal, Shahin - Clinical Associate Clinician Teacher/Educator Award from the Arthritis Professor Society for 2013; recognizing an outstanding clinician teacher/educator who is an exemplary role model for medical students and medical residents considering a career in rheumatology and/or education.

NOV 2013 PHARAMACEUTICAL Lynd, Larry - Associate Professor Dr. Lynd received the 2012-2013 Doctor of Pharmacy SCIENCES (PharmD) Program Instructor award from the UBC Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences. NOV 2013 SCIENCE- Botany Ellis, Shona - Professor of Teaching Shona Ellis has been awarded the Charles Edwin Bessey Teaching Award for outstanding contributions made to Botanical instruction. This award recognizes individuals whose work has improved the quality of botanical education at a regional, national, or international level.
