    UFO WAVES: AN INTERNATIONAL BIBLIOGRAPHY Vicente-Juan Ballester Olmos FOTOCAT Project [email protected] Introduction In the study of UFO phenomena there are several topics that emerge as key issues for the understanding and potential resolution of this worldwide enigma. The subject of UFO waves and UFO flaps is, evidently, one of these. Compiling bibliographies of research items has been a recurrent interest in my investigative life (1-7), as I have always thought that, as in mainstream science disciplines, progress is linked to the knowledge of prior work in the field. Those who ignore what their senior colleagues have produced on a given matter waste time duplicating past efforts or are unable to build upon previous finds. Over the years, the field of ufology has produced many authoritative bibliographies. With a few exceptions, these are general lists of literature, sometimes annotated, but usually not organized by topic (8-28). Nevertheless, these assist the researcher and represent an academic advancement. As I am committed to the concept of achieving a synthesis of knowledge in some of the main areas of the study of UFOs (29), I think a more pragmatic approach is to design a series of very specific, subject-focused bibliographies. As a practical example, I have combed through my files to create a thorough bibliography of articles and papers related to the mystery of UFO waves, those periods when UFO reporting increases noticeably and suddenly with respect to average historical records. I have been assisted by a number of top scholars who have contributed references, actual materials, pdfs and online links to create what is intended to be a comprehensive list of the literature on this subject published all over the world.

This arises because of asymmetries in the electromagnetic zero-point field (ZPF) or electromagnetic quantum vacuum as perceived from an accelerating reference frame. In such a frame, the Poynting vector and momentum flux of the ZPF become non-zero. If one assumes that scattering of the ZPF radiation takes place at the level of quarks and arXiv:gr-qc/9906084v3 12 May 2000 electrons constituting matter, then it is possible for both Newton’s equation of motion, f = ma, and its relativistic covariant generalization, F = dP/dτ, to be obtained as a consequence of the non-zero ZPF momentum flux. General relativity specifies which geodesic path a free particle will follow, but geometrodynamics has no mechanism for generating a reaction force for deviation from geodesic motion. We discuss a different approach involving the electromagnetic zero-point field (ZPF) of the quantum vacuum. Scattering of this quantum radiation by the quarks and electrons in matter can result in an acceleration-dependent reaction force. For the past twenty years over 11,000 UFO sightings have been reported and examined by FTD. Yet, no positive evidence has been formd that UFOs pose any threat to the sec1.1.rity of ti:ds cormtry. In addition, t he evidence examined denies t he existence of flying saucers from onter space, or any similar phenomenon popularly associated with UFOs. Since FTD is an intelligence organization, the fifty million people who believe in UFOs also believe FTD and the Air Force are withholding information from them.Mercer This has simply resulted in a greater demand for information (which does not, in f act exist) and this in turn has further discredited FI'D and the Air Force.     Book Reviews REVIEW SYMPOSIUM The UFO Controversy in America. By David M. Jacobs. Indiana Uni- versity Press, Bloomington, Ind., 1976. 362 pp. $12.50. DANIEL COHEN: David Michael Jacobs, an assistant professor of history at Temple University, has written what should have been an important book. He has reviewed the entire UFO controversy from 1947 (with a brief look at pre-1947 sightings) to 1974. This is a heroic task, for there is an enormous amount of material on the subject, most of it perfectly awful. While Prof. Jacobs has not read everything, he has clearly read more than most ordinary mortals could bear. He has attempted to do a decent job with an unwieldy subject. And yet, to one who lived through, and in a small way participated in, the UFO controversy, Jacobs' book is disappointing. The whole fuss over UFOs was a lot nuttier than he makes it sound. There is space for only a couple of examples of what I mean. Jacobs makes only one offhand mention of science-fiction and occult editor and publisher Ray Palmer. Yet noted astronomer Donald Menzel gave Palmer major credit for starting the whole UFO controversy. Palmer sure got me mto UFOs. I was a SF reading teen-ager in Chicago when UFOs, or flying saucers as they were called then, first came to public attention. Along with my fellow SF addicts, I got hooked on flying saucers through Palmer-edited publications. I lost my faith in flying saucers when I saw Palmer get smashed in a debate on the subject with Willy Ley at a SF fan convention.

August 2nd a mysterious cloud judged to be 15,000 feet high moved against the wind while radiating green, red, orange, and blue hues. It swept over California headed north. A week later a soundless explosion of green light lit up the sky over Los Angeles, San Bernardino, San Diego and Riverside Counties, followed by a brilliant white glare lasting a minute and a half. · Farther north, an area extending from Salem, Oregon to Seattle, Washington was similarly illuminated. The local OSI unit in New Mexico was still plenty concerned by aerial phenomena. Proof is a request made by the 17th Distri c t OSI Office in a letter dated August 7th addressed to a Californi~ unit, the 19th District OSI at Fairfield-Suisun Air Force Base , Fairfield : "Reference is made to article which appeared in the 'Albuquerque Journal' on 3 August 1950. This article stated that a varied-colored cloud (green, blue, etc.), floating against the wind, was observed by several hundred people in and around San Rafael, California.
