“Did You Know?” The Great Escape

Every winter, the energy equivalent of all the oil that flows through the Alaskan pipeline in a year leaks through American windows! Since the energy crisis of the’70s, experts have been telling us regularly that insulating is one of the best ways to save energy. Frankly, energy conservation cannot be taken seriously without making sure your home is properly insulated. Insulation Facts: * If every gas-heated home was properly caulked and weather-stripped, the natural gas saved annually would be enough to heat 4 million homes. * Nearly half of all the energy used in our homes is wasted. It goes “out the window,” or through the attic, cracks or other leaks, in the form of heat-or, in summer, air conditioning-lost to the outside. * Attic insulation can save 5% or more on heating costs-15% on air-conditioning costs (depending on the climate). Simple Things to Do: * If there is no insulation in your home, you’re costing yourself and the environment a fortune. If you do have insulation, check to see if you have enough. Have an “energy audit” to find the heat leaks in your house or apartment. If you are a do-it-yourselfer, this can range from simply going around the window frames and sashes of your house with a lighted candle (if the flame flickers, you need caulking or weather-stripping) - If you are not, the utility companies usually do this at no charge. From the Inside Out An Ongoing Series of Personal Points of View on Health … By Mary Carney Where Did I Put...... Where did I put my keys? My glasses? I know that word - but it just won’t get to my tongue … What’s his / her name ? Is this just a “senior” moment? Or is it a beginning symptom of a more disturbing pattern - will I “get” Alzheimer’s? The real question is, what am I feeding my brain? Sugar? Fast digesting carbs but not being physically active enough to burn them up as fast as they digest? Is my brain being clouded by medication side effects? You know … the ones warning us “don’t drive” after taking this? What about those pain killers? Prozac? Valium? Antidepressants designed to alter the brain? This summer I was introduced to a nutritionally dense, very absorbable liquid fruit juice that tasted a bit like blackstrap molasses. Shortly thereafter I learned (via home- made CD) about a mid-80’s gentleman with Alzheimer’s whose doctors had given him two weeks to live, and thus stopped his medications. The family arranged to put him in “a home for mom and dad,” because of the care needed. The owner asked the family if he could be given a three-ounce bottle of this liquid nutrition a day. Sure, why not? Well … one week later he was more alert and eating. Two weeks later he was talking, then sitting up and walking. Continuous improvement, alert and smiling when family came to visit, enjoying short car trips, and, when the facility provider took him flying as part of the home’s enrichment program, wished he had learned how to fly years earlier. And he was given the opportunity to hold onto the controls and fly on his own. Several years ago, when we the California Medical Board was investigating how to regulate alternative care providers (viz CA SB 577), Dr. Hyla Cass, MD, ND, Psychiatrist at Cedars-Sinai, testified. An expert on brain function, her testimony focused on the importance of proper nutrition for the brain. She, too, reported instances of reversing Alzheimer’s and dementia through simple dietary changes, with some supplementation, accompanied by gentle internal cleansing to support the body’s elimination processes. I was so impressed! A doctor testifying to the principles of exactly what I had become convinced were essential for health. When my eyes or brain are fuzzy, I know I need more nutrients. Fresh veggies and fruits, no sugar or fast digesting carbs, more protein - mixed nuts are a good start. Since I’m not on any medications, I don’t have to deal with those side effects. But when I think that at my age most people are on at least 9 to 13 medications a day - all of which interfere with the body’s enzyme processes and reduce or cut off information between your body’s cells to the brain, what else can we expect? Taking charge - knowing that what we put inside is what’s going to be reflected outside … may you enjoy this holiday season by eating deliciously and wisely from the inside out. © 2007. The Lees, new LA residents from Connecticut, decided to purchase a historic Monrovia home earlier this year. After months of search for just the right home, this one tugged at their heartstrings. With its 1884 construction date comes charm, history, tradition, several remodels and additions including indoor plumbing, plus a host of modern day challenges. Much of what the Lees have learned about the Monroe The Monroes lived in a tent on the property while their “Cottage” comes from historical “Cottage” was built in 1884. and heritage organizations, old photographs and just plain hearsay. Debi Lee and I made a visit to the Monrovia Historical Museum on Palm, to see what they might have in documentation and history about their home and its builder, William N. Monroe. We found a wealth of Monroe artifacts there, some framed copies of packing labels from Monroe’s fruit company, two books on Monrovia history (copies available for sale) and two charming and articulate octogenarian docents who brought the town’s history alive for us. A photo of the town in the late 1800’s shows their home with a young tree at the northwest corner, that could be the young fig or rubber tree (both have been mentioned) that grew to shade four homesites by the time it was removed TABLE FOR TWO in 2003. For a property tax incentive intended to preserve historical homes and the heritage of our communities, the homes require earthquake retrofitting, a historical plaque and strict guidelines on exterior changes to the home. Each individual community oversees the Mills Act homes within their borders, and rules and regulations vary from city to city. The Lees have been on a steep learning curve for historic home maintenance and preservation, after their previous Connecticut home was of 1950’s vintage. Their electrician, Yiannis Arvanitidis, is a frequent visitor, slowly unraveling old crawlspace mysteries of electricians past. They’ve learned more than they probably wanted to know about earthquake retrofitting and cohabitating with local wildlife in the past few months. Each month new challenges arise to maintain or restore the grace and beauty of the past, while raising a growing family in the technology age. Despite the challenges, I don’t think they’d trade this special home for anywhere else in LA.
