The Littleton Link

March 2020

Editors letter

Dear All Welcome to the March edition of the Link. This month the clocks ‘spring forward’ and we have the spring equinox, when day and night are the same length. It seems to have been a really dark winter but our gardens are showing us that spring is on the way with trees coming into blossom and bright beautiful blooms abounding. This month we’ve a warning from Council about Council Tax scams, plus reports from all our usual contributors too. If you’d like to see anything new in here please don’t be afraid to send it through. Kind regards, Mary

THE LITTLETONS WI

President Margaret Potter opened the meeting by welcoming everyone and also our speaker for the evening Rob Hemming

As it is our 70th Anniversary this year it was suggested that a small quilt, tablecloth or banner be made from individual squares sewn by our members. A sub committee has been formed to organise the marking and celebrating two events in August and October. 3 ideas have been put forward to members to choose the type of evening they would most enjoy.

It was suggested we might like to make little green hearts to ‘show the love’ for our country and our commitment to helping with climate change. Janice made a beautiful patchwork heart which will go to WI House along with messages attached by members saying how they are doing there bit in this campaign.

(pledges (including from Littleton 1st School): use loose tea instead of tea bags, send clothes to charity shops to be loved again, buy local to reduce ‘air miles’, written to Nestle to ask them to use sustainable palm oil in products, make bird feeders from

5 natural & compostable materials, piloting the use of recyclable water bottles & lunch boxes & wax food wraps, recycle everything possible, plant trees & shrubs)

The Green Hearts project was mentioned to the Littletons Primary School and we look forward to hearing their ideas to help the carbon footprint in our community.

Margaret Potter has put a board together with a list of the competitions and their criteria for this years ACM at Three Counties Showground

Our speaker Rob Hemming gave a very interesting talk on the History of the Regal Cinema. It first opened in 1932 when a local business man realised how much it would benefit the community. Unfortunately it closed in 2003 but a concert promoter and entrepreneur, Patrick Wiper, could see the need for a cinema as it was at this time the only one in the town. He and other investors provided the funds and it opened again in 2011. It has shown many classical and popular films over the years as well as Live shows and screened Live Broadcasts from London and other cities.

After a delicious supper the competition ‘An item of film memorabilia’ was judged by Rob and the winner was Margaret D with a 1959 film script for ‘The French Mistress’

The meeting closed at 9:40pm. The next meeting is on Tuesday 10th March, 2020 at 7:00 pm when our speaker Jeff Wood will talk about the Vale Wildlife Organisation and the competition will be An Image of British Wildlife.

Wychavon Recycling - A Mini Guide

Aluminium cans put them in your green bin or take to a household recycling centre or your local recycling banks. Carrier bags can be recycled in store at most large supermarkets but use a re-usable bag to reduce the need for them in the first place. Do not put them in your green bin. Computers can be donated to Lifetech Recycling or can be recycled at household recycling centres in the Wychavon area. This includes laptops and monitors. Hairspray and other canned aerosols can go in your green bin, or you can recycle them at household recycling centres. Just remember to remove the lid. Paint you can dispose of paint at household recycling sites or donate it to Resource Exchange. Paint tins must not go in your black or green bins, as when they get crushed in our bin lorries they cause unsightly spillages and damage mechanical parts. Visit: www.wychavon.gov.uk/recycling-guide for a more comprehensive list.

Warning over Council Tax scam Residents are being warned to be on their guard against scammers cold calling them with fake offers of a Council Tax rebate. Malvern Hills District, Worcester City and Wychavon councils have all received reports from residents who have been targeted in this way in recent days. The scammer claims to be from the finance department of the council and asks the person to confirm their date of birth and then gives a reference number, before explaining the call is being recorded for training and monitoring purposes. They then claim to have checked the person's details and found they have overpaid Council Tax and are owed money, but unfortunately due to a system error they cannot transfer the money over and need their debit or credit card details to make the payment. A spokesman for Malvern Hills District, Worcester City and Wychavon councils, said: "We would urge residents who receive a call like this to put the phone down and report it immediately to Action Fraud on www.actionfraud.police.uk or call 0300 123 20. "Nobody from any of the three South Worcestershire Councils would ever call you out of the blue to discuss an issue with your Council Tax and we would never ask you over the phone for your debit or credit card details if we did owe you a refund. "If you believe your Council Tax is incorrect then you can find out how to challenge it at www.gov.uk/challenge-council-tax-band"

NORTH AND MIDDLE LITTLETON PARISH COUNCIL

DOG WALKING The Parish Council are constantly receiving complaints from parishioners concerning the amount of dog faeces being left on the footpaths. Dog fouling is a messy eyesore. Perhaps more importantly, dog mess is also a potential health hazard. All dog owners have a legal duty to clean up dog faeces immediately after their animal fouls a public place. Dog mess laws do not allow the excuse of 'not noticing' that the canine has fouled. Owners could be liable for a ‘Fixed Penalty Fine’ of £100, rising up to £1000 if a case goes to court.

Wychavon District Council maintains over 300 dog waste bins in public open spaces and provides dog waste sacks through their Community Contact Centres. For anyone who can’t locate a Dog Waste Bin double wrap your ‘poo’ bag and dump it in a normal litter bin or take it home. Dog fouling can be reported to Wychavon at: https://selfservice.wychavon.gov.uk/wsformswdc/wdc_dogfouling.jsp

GREEN DOG WALKERS is an initiative promoted by Wychavon District Council at: https://www.wychavon.gov.uk/green-dog-walkers Your local Parish Council would like to encourage you to join and help to keep our pavements and open spaces clear of dog mess. Thank you Marion Brighton Clerk North and Middle Littleton Parish Council

March 2020 The beginning of March sees the start of the season of Lent. According to tradition, this is the season when we try to think of something to give up – chocolate, cake, meat, favourite TV shows – I’ve tried all of these over the years with varying success! Of course, the season itself commemorates the time when Jesus went out into the desert for 40 days and fasted in preparation for the beginnings of His ministry. Since the earliest days of Christianity, believers have used this season in the run up to Easter as a time for prayer, penitence, self-denial and atonement. Part of the self-denial bit is the giving up of luxuries, which I think most people associate with Lent. But it should also be a time for thinking about taking up something – perhaps the discipline of reading some scripture each day, or helping out with a local charity. This year, once again we have some Lent groups meeting in various places in the Benefice. This year we’re exploring the musical ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ so if this interests you please do look at the notices in your local church for more details. It all starts with an Ash Wednesday service on 26th February at 7:00pm in Sts. Mary & Milburgh, Offenham. Please do join us for this reflective and special service. Lent might be the season self-denial, but it can also be the season of self-discovery. What might God be calling you to do this year?

Revd. Philip Morton

WORLD DAY OF PRAYER 2020 “Rise, take your mat and walk” Women, men and children of all ages are called to “Rise, take your mat and walk” to join this day of prayer. Women of Zimbabwe have prepared this year’s service and they encourage us all to reflect on the difficulties and unrest that have plagued their country over many years. They share the challenges they have met and the hopes they have for the future. They encourage us to “Rise, take your mat and walk” with them as they continue their often turbulent journey towards full reconciliation. World Day of Prayer is an international inter-church organisation which enables us to hear the thoughts of women from all parts of the world: their hopes, concerns and prayers. The preparation for the day is vast. An international committee is based in New York and there are national committees in each participating country. Regional conferences meet to consider the service and then local groups make their plans. The day of prayer is celebrated in over 170 countries. It begins in Samoa and prayer in native languages travels throughout the world – through Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Europe and the Americas, before finishing in American Samoa more than 36 hours later. All are invited to St James’ Church, Badsey on Friday 6th March 2020 at 2:30 pm, where we will gather to celebrate the service prepared by the women of Zimbabwe. You are also welcome to join us for a light lunch, 1:00 pm at the church.

To book for lunch and for further information, please contact: Diana Condeliffe - 07910 805831 or see the WDP website: www.wwdp.org.uk 24

Worcester Magdeburg Newsletter

January 2020 Dear All As Brexit approaches we need to focus on continuing to keep our Partnership links in place at this time of change.

The Three Confessions Conference is to be held in Germany this year from Friday 1st May to Monday 4th May at Neudietendorf near Erfurt (www.zinzendorfhaus.de) The topic is “Lord’s House for many people. New concepts for using old church buildings”

We will be looking for delegates to attend especially if you have any special interests in the subject of how to use our buildings to serve a wider community and not just for worship. Accommodation is provided but you will be responsible for paying for your travel to and from the venue. Do let me know if you would like to attend places are limited to a total of fifteen, ten from C of E and five Roman Catholic.

There is planning going ahead for a joint pilgrimage in either Lund in Sweden or Trier in Germany provisional dates are 15th to 20th March 2021. It would have to be self-funding and possibly not a large group.

Also after a gap we now have reconnected with St. Francis Dudley as there is a new representative. They had a successful visit to Bremen in September and are looking forward to a return visit this year.

Bishop John has been invited to an ordination service in May by Bishop Friedrich Kramer

St. Barnabas Church held an office of Compline and Prayers for Peace on 16th January to mark the 75th anniversary of the firebombing of Magdeburg.

25

After many years of service to the Partnership Committee the Revd James Knights has retired, we thank him for all he has done to promote our links to Germany.

There will be a benefice service on 31 May, which Archdeacon Robert is coming to

LITTLETONS’ WEDNESDAY CLUB The first piece of news I can share with you is that JASON DONOVON will be performing with our popular regular MATT SLACK at the Birmingham Hippodrome in the pantomime GOLDILOCKS & the 3 BEARS. It will be Jason’s first pantomime so Good Luck Jason. February 19th. We had quite a varied selection of goods for our Bring & Buy sale. It was a wide selection & we decided to separate the donations, some we were able to sell & others we could ask for donations if there was anything members wanted to buy with a donation. We had certain members bidding against each other sometimes by only 5p giving us a light hearted atmosphere until one said “Oh! Let her have it then” with a general chuckle. We were rather surprised but very pleased when Marion said we had raised £86-00 towards club funds. We had our usual raffle when members are always very generous, & our very welcome tea/coffee & biscuits. March 4th. Fiona Gibson will be our speaker telling us about bees & gardens. March 18th. will be an outing for a Carvery lunch. April 1st. We will meet in the Village Hall at 2-30pm. April 15th. We are booked for our annual visit to the March Hare for lunch. April 29th. Meeting in the Village Hall at 2-30pm.

Wednesday Club welcomes new members and visitors to our meetings and outings. You will be made very welcome.

Going around the Littletons searching for something to put on the front cover of this edition I’ve snapped some blossoms in the hedgerows and been invited into gardens.

The early flowering trees, shrubs and plants provide much needed food for our early pollinators and thanks to the cheery colours help to lift our spirits after the dark winter months. If you’ve left the top cover on last year’s plants you’re helping to give insects a home 31

during the winter and providing shelter for birds. Here’s a selection of some of the beautiful colours out in our villages at present – I hope you like them.

If you enjoy growing things then you might be interested in National Gardening Week which takes place from Monday 27 April to Sunday 3 May 2020. You can find more details here: https://www.rhs.org.uk/get-involved/national-gardening-week

Some highlights from our first 20 years

2004 – SWS funding allowed the purchase of our first two floodplain meadows, Gore Meadows near Fladbury and Littleton Meadows in North Littleton. This has allowed the reinstatement of more traditional management regime of hay-cutting and aftermath grazing which is helping to restore the wildflower grassland at these sites. 2018 – VLHT are part of the Lottery funded Market Gardening Heritage Project being run by Worcestershire Achieve and Archaeology Services, recording, restoring and celebrating the hovels and associated market gardening heritage of the Vale. 2019 – To celebrate BBC Hereford and Worcester’s 30th year and VLHT’s 20th year we planted a birthday orchard at our North Littleton Community Orchard site. 2019 – Again, thanks to SWS we purchased two more floodplain sites in our 20th year, Mill Bank Meadows near Fladbury and Wheeler’s Meadow at North Littleton.

Here’s to the next 20 years!

Vale Landscape Heritage Trust (VLHT) is a registered charity, number 1080109. We work to protect and preserve the environment in and around the Vale of Evesham and Pershore. We work with volunteers, funders, farmers and the government to secure the future of over 320 acres.
