Mastering that art and capturing human minds into the soul of the characters of the film and mirroring the very own society was part of Mani Ratnam’s life for the past three decades. This research paper points towards some of the techniques employed and experiments conducted in visual storytellingin his various projects by using Miseen scene elements and cinematography in beautiful ways. In Roja what he Sasnthosh Sivan and Mani Ratnam experimented was painting the reflectors green, to look the grass greener than it actually is. In Thapalathy, Mani ratnam projected a yellowish light, like an aura into the protagonist which symbolizes his history and background. In Bombay, he throughout kept a blue tone in order to gives an element of mystery in the film. In Raavanan, he played with shades and light and that too in two different ways at the beginning and at the end of the films. In Alaipayuthe he presented the story more through the movements of camera and through micro expressions and symbolizations.Theglobalization and evolution of Indian Cinematography can be traced out through the works of Mani Ratnam.

    Asian Women March 2017, Vol. 33, No. 1, pp. 73-98 Voiceless Heroines: Use of Dubbed Voices in Tamil Movies* Premalatha Karupiah Universiti Sains Malaysia, Malaysia 1 Abstract Scholars have argued that sound in films has not been given much theoretical attention. Without understanding the use of sound in films, a comprehensive knowledge of the meaning and ideology of movies is not possible. This paper explores how heroines’ voices are presented in Tamil movies and provides empirical evidence about gender inequality in the aural practices of Tamil movies. The data for this study came from a content analysis of 40 Tamil movies produced in India (1961–2012), 8 websites related to voice dubbing in Tamil movies, and 4 YouTube videos. The term “dubbed voice” refers to the practice of using a voice-actor or dubbing artist to deliver the dialogue while someone else acts in the movie. In Tamil movies, this trend has been common since the 1980s among female actors in lead roles but not among lead male actors. Even though the inability to speak Tamil is one of the reasons for this practice, it does not explain why female stars mostly use a dubbed voice. The male actors–including non-native speakers–often use their own voice. The use of a few select dubbing artists to lend their voices to heroines limits the type of female voices heard (from lead roles) in Tamil movies and narrowly defines the types of women’s voices that are associated with someone who is attractive or good. Therefore, Tamil movies are limiting not only the looks that are showcased on the screen but also the female voices heard in these movies.

Classical Illayaraja - 1 Recently, I watched the movie 'Chembaruthi' on video. One of those unethical, "kuppai" screen printed video cassette, you know, that gives you a vision like that of a "soda-butti" watching TV without his spectacles! Illayaraja has done a fantastic job in that movie. Though I had heared all those songs many times while I was in India, watching that movie created a reminiscent train of thoughts in my mind, about Illayaraja, his music, the dramatic change he brought about in Thamizh cinema. I thought that it would be worthwhile to discuss his music, particularly the CLASSICAL aspect! I am aware that it is not possible to write about all his carnatic oriented songs, about how he has handled those ragas, how he has deviated from the classical style etc. But it would definitely be interesting to pour out our ideas once in a while in a random order of the ragas covered by him. In "Chembaruthi" there are six songs, out of which 4 are carnatic based. All the songs were "sooper hits". To a guy who knows carnatic music, the ragas are explicit, and to a non-classical rasika, they are just great tunes! This was one of his specialities, to give the raga in almost good shape and also make a good cinema tune out of it. And ofcourse, the rhythm should give scope for good dance movements so that the hero and heroine could share their love by dancing! Maybe, many of his tunes have to be branded as semi-classical or light music (even though the raga form might be pure) only because of this rhythm factor.

One of the song “ Wafaia Ja Putla Wafadar Sindhi, Hu Hara Fanna Me Ahin Hoshiyar Sindhi” In this song Master Chander narrated the name of Gope Kamlani, comedian actor in Hindi Film industry for which I was not knowning. One one day I along with my wife Asha attended a program in Sindhology Adipur in which music on voilen was performed by Master Kanayalal Lalwani, he had worked along with many music director and it was also told that his children are also working for music in film industry. These facts were unknown to me and also to many Sindhis. Most often while watching television ,my wife Asha, son Yash and daughter Sonam discussed about who is sindhi artist in film and television industry. These event brought a thought in my mind to list the Sindhis who are working in film industry, hence I started searching on web. I hoped that I could collect more than 100 names but this figure reached more than 350 numbers which are listed and detailed in this collection.
