SPORTS NEWSLETTER TERM 1 AND 2 2016-17:

The incredible Year 11 Rugby Team!! District Champions

Welcome to the Sports Newsletter for Terms 1 and 2 2016-17!! These last two terms have seen an incredible amount of sports achievements and it’s an honour to be able to write about out our awesome pupils and the huge talent they possess.

SPORTS RESULTS AND ACHIEVEMENTS:

DITSTRICT X-COUNTRY:

Our X-Country teams continue to go from strength to strength. We started with the District Relay Competition held here at TK. Our Year 7 pupils had their first run-out as part of a relay team and showed excellent potential but the event will be best remembered for the Year 8 boys and girls teams who both finished in 1st place ahead of 12 other school teams. What incredible results!!

To top this we also had individual success in the District and County trials. The following pupils were selected for the District: Liam Dailey, Jack Powis, Maisey Four-acres Philips, Rupert Adamson, Matilda Ashley, Emily Dandy, Millie Haywood, Izzy Cooke – 8 pupils!! At the County X-Country trials held at Newent school the following pupils went on to be selected for the County!!

County X-Coutry: Millie Haywood, Jack Powis, Liam Dailey. We are waiting to see if our talented runners Matilda Ashley, Izzy Cooke (who was absent taking part in Emgland Football trials) and Rupert Adamson make it through! Fingers crossed.

Jack Powis, Liam Dailey and Millie Haywood who all made the County X-Country Team!!

RUGBY:

This has been an amazing two terms of Rugby and we are so proud to announce that our unbelievable Year 11 squad have won their 4th District title in 5 years beating a very talented Kingshill side 17-10 in the final played at the Prince of Wales Stadium, Cheltenham. It was an immense game played with skill, determination and passion. Thomas Keble proved to be too strong for Kingshill and scored some scintillating tries. What a way to see off their School Rugby. But wait…they still have their awesome Paris Rugby and Netball Tour to look forward to so their Rugby isn’t finished yet!!

BASKETBALL:

We are in full flow with all our Basketball fixtures and so far so good for most of our teams! We are blessed with a number of extremely talented players a lot of whom play club Basketball outside of school as well. This year we have entered the South West Basketball League which includes some very strong teams from all over the South West region. We have also entered the District Tournaments as well as the County Competitions taking place in January.

We have already won the Year 8 District Tournament and look forward to seeing how all our other age groups get on. The Year 8 team hope to follow in the footsteps of our hugely talented U14 side who managed to get to the last 32 in the Country last year.

The superb Year 8 Basketball squad who won their District Title this term!

YEAR 9 JUNIOR SPORTS CAPTAINS AND JUNIOR SPORTS AMBASSADORS:

Congratulations to all our Year 9 Junior Sports Captains and Junior Sports Ambassadors who were recently selected from over 40 applicants. We have recently added Iwan Rees to our role as he has been exceptional in supporting School Basketball recently. The successful pupils are listed below:

FOOTBALL:

We are very proud to announce that Izzy Cooke in Year 9 has been selected for the South West of U15 squad and has then gone on to attend England U15 trials. We are crossing our fingers for her as she waits to find out if she has been successful or not. What an incredible talent she is!

NETBALL:

Our Netball teams have been busy competing in a number of friendly matches culminating in their District Tournaments. These now involve a regional tournament where the top two teams then progress to the Grand Finals. All our teams have played some superb friendly matches against local teams but one age group has stood out this year – our Year 11 girls squad! They have won nearly all of their friendly games and went on to finish runners-up in their Regional Tournament. They then went on to the Grand Finals and finished an amazing 3rd out of a total of 12 schools overall beating Rednock 10-4 in the Play-off Final. This is an excellent result. Player of the series was Holly Ostle!

YEAR 10 GCSE PE / BTEC SPORT TRIP TO THE UNIVERSITY OF BATH:

Our Year 10 GCSE PE / BTEC Sport pupils recently visited the iconic and inspirational University of Bath to take part in a series of fitness tests and have an opportunity to witness up close the world class facilities they have for sport. We were lucky enough to meet Paige Reed who plays Netball for Team Bath in the Super League as well as being part of the England Squad. She talked about her journey to elite level sport and her sacrifices and commitment to training and working hard to be the best. Inspirational and she went to school in Gloucester too!!!

PRIMARY SCHOOL LINKS:

As many parents and pupils at TK will know, we work very closely with our Cluster Primary schools and during the course of the year host 6 different sports competitions for them. This culminates in a spectacular Mini Olympics at the end of the year. This year has already kicked- off with the electric Sports Hall Athletics which involved 4 schools and 80 pupils taking part in a series of indoor Athletics activities.

Congratulations to Hill Primary who won both the girls and boys competitions ahead of Bisley, Oakridge and Christchurch.

Chalford Hill Primary School 2016 winners!

We are also working hard training pupils from both Bussage Primary and Chalford Hill to become Sports Captains, so they can run lunchtime Clubs at their own schools. This is a fantastic programme which the pupils absolutely love and become dedicated to. Chalford Hill have just finished their training and are now waiting to start after Xmas!! Exciting times!

TABLE-TENNIS:

We have also seen our U13 boys and U16 boys Table-tennis teams compete in the Level 2 District Tournament which took place at Stratford Park Leisure Centre. Our U16 boys showed real promise and finished an impressive 3rd.

We have an even stronger squad waiting in the wings ready for next year and this is down to the amazing after school Table-tennis club we run on a Tuesday night. This is part of £3000 of funding secured with Active and Stroud Table-Tennis Club. Jim Hurford, a leading force in Table-tennis in the local area, has worked closely with Thomas Keble over the last two years to put this club in place. We have gained new tables, bats, balls, a feeding machine and of course, coaches to run the sessions. This really has boosted the involvement in Table-Tennis at TK and we look forward to more teams and even better results in the next few years.

CONGRATULATIONS TO…

Well done to Jessica Osgood in Year 9 who recently competed in the Level 4 Regional Swimming Championships held at GL1 Leisure Centre in Gloucester. She competed in the 50m Freestyle, Butterfly and Breaststroke events finising 1st in her Heats leading to the Finals. Her best result was in the Butterfly where she placed an amazing 3rd in the Finals for the South West. This is stunning and a great achievement – well done Jessica!!

DANCE:

Well done to our GCSE Dancers who recently performed in front of a packed audience at the Stroud Subscription Rooms as part of a Dance Showcase. The talent we have at TK in Dance is spectacular and we look forward to the Dance Show later in the year.

Have a lovely Christmas break,
