INFORMED ANNUAL REPORT 2016 ENGAGED INVOLVED w

PUBLIC MEDIA EMPOWERS OUR COMMUNITY TO BE MORE ENGAGED. EVERY OTHER CAUSE WE CARE ABOUT IS INVIGORATED WHEN PEOPLE FEEL INFORMED. Informed, Engaged, Involved

WITH EVER-MORE CHOICES for media content, local listeners continued to choose Public Radio for more hours in the period covered by this annual report. News 88.9 KNPR ranked in the top 15 NPR stations nationwide in year-over-year audience growth, with afternoon drive time increasing by 50%.

After attention to caucus and primaries in spring, we turned to NPR for coverage of tragic shooting events in Orlando and Dallas in the summer. Would our newsroom be ready if a major news event unfolded here? Thanks to the investments made by members and corporate supporters the answer is yes, and we’ve rehearsed and planned for such eventuality. Yet, no crisis plan can adequately prepare for colleagues killed while carrying out journalism. In July the NPR family mourned the loss of photographer David Gilkey and translator Zabihullah Tamanna - their convoy targeted and ambushed in southern Florence Rogers Afghanistan. At a memorial in Portland I learned that David relished the irony of being an President and CEO award-winning photographer for an audio medium. Yet that is who we are now - public media wherever you are, however you find us via sound, image, text or social media.

This past year, the excellence of the locally-focused editorial and visual storytelling from Desert Companion magazine was recognized with 2 “Maggie” Awards and multiple nods from the Nevada Press Association. Just a few days before the close of the fiscal year another milestone in our evolution - the first Presidential debate on September 29th drew enormous on-line audiences, with NPR.org visited by more than nine million people using the transcript and fact checking tool.

The investments of members, corporate supporters and foundation gifts funded another year of audience growth and increased community service. Thank you. I cherish the talents and dedication of the staff who work in partnership with colleagues nationwide to insure every occasion with us is time well spent on air, in print or online.

THE “RADIO DIAL” is now quaintly insufficient to describe what our content means for 200,000+ users each month. Our NPR network of 265 affiliated stations insures we can be found wherever our audiences are. Technology provides the essential conduits for our trusted content: social media, podcasts, apps, connected cars and voice-activated home assistants.

In the last fiscal year we have kept pace with our audience’s appetite for the new and the next. We have filled a critical need for Nevadans to hear their own experiences reflected in a space unfettered by commercial or partisan pressures. In 2016 the Board authorized expenditures from earnings accrued from restricted investments to remodel office space in the Donald W Reynolds Broadcast Center. Addressing the overdue technical upgrade of our studios is a near-term project of urgency in order to keep us “mission ready”.

Jerry Nadal, Board Chair Of the hundreds of hours of original news content produced from our studios each year Sr Vice President of and hundreds more stories published online and in print by Desert Companion, a substantial Resident Shows Division amount reflects the issues closest to your own local philanthropic interests. In addition to Worldwide, editorial, more than 8,000 standalone on-air messages were also aired gratis for regional Cirque du Soleil non-profits. These combined channels and audiences are an accelerator for community- building which empowers Nevadans to engage in realizing the aspirations we share for our beloved state. When you are seeking allies in the cause closest to your heart, it’s good to know Nevada Public Radio has informed hundreds of thousands of people who are in tune with our challenges and inspired to join with like-minded advocates.

It is my honor to lead the NVPR Board of Directors in guiding Management in meeting the expectations you have for us. I’m proud to see NVPR recognized as one of the leading NPR member stations evolving as a multi-platform independent media company operating in the public interest. If you aren’t yet a stakeholder in Nevada Public Radio, I welcome your consideration of a role you can play to insure our continued service.

The craft and impact of storytelling

Our brains are wired for stories. It’s how we share, enlighten and shape our culture. Nevada Public Radio’s stories combine rhythm, pace and climax to connect with the community and grip the imagination. Public media is the campfire we gather around to share our views of the world. These stories are told in the pages of Desert Companion magazine and through the air by the voices of KNPR. A big idea cannot be conveyed without a story and we believe in journalism that eschews traditional formats to connect with and inspire dynamic, thriving communities.

Desert Companion Magazine Readership Desert Companion magazine is mailed to all Nevada Public Radio members and is available at all area Coffee Bean and Tea locations as well as select retail locations. Desert Companion is also viewed online desertcompanion.vegas.
