Some lectures will also deal with the history of the Order of St. Clare, the Third Order Regular, and the Secular Franciscan Order. 1 Early Followers of Francis and Clare This list highlights some of the early followers of Francis and Clare who lived mostly within the first one hundred years of the Franciscan Movement. It reflects many different sources, not all of which agree with one another! If some of the accounts were not in agreement with specific dates, the compilers did their best to reflect accurate information. Clare’s group was known as the Poor Ladies of San Damiano, Damianites or the Poor Ladies of Assisi [known today as the Order of St. Clare or Poor Clares (O.S.C. or P.C.; Second Order); the Third Order of St. Francis (T.O.S.F.; Third Order Secular) is known today as the Secular Franciscan Order (O.F.S., Ordo Franciscanus Saecularis). Clare of Assisi: Foot-Washing Leadership Sister Madge Karecki (ssj-tosf) [email protected] Introduction In recent years, there has been a proliferation of books published about leadership styles. We have seen the meteoric rise in popularity of Stephen Covey‟s The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People and now his Principle-Centered Leadership is fast becoming a best-seller. John C. Maxwell offers readers basic insights into various issues surrounding leadership in his Leadership 101: What Every Leader Needs to Know; while Rudolph W. Giuliani utilized his experience of being mayor of New York and produced his memoir-like volume, Leadership. These publications and many others on the development of leadership styles are indicative of a search for more collaborative and participative models of leadership. I think intuitively we know something is just not right. The model of the ruthless, capitalist CEO, the lone ranger at the top of the heap is a model that is being called into question by more than a few thinking people. Yet even the best of these volumes focus on skills and techniques without giving attention to the transformation of the one who is in leadership. Are leadership abilities inborn? Is leadership just a matter of learning a few techniques? Is the bottom line of every leadership style simply getting a job done? From a Christian perspective, good leadership requires more than techniques or skills. Christian leadership calls for something much deeper and much more challenging. It is for this deeper perspective that we turn to the medieval woman, Clare of Assisi. -

Christie 19 December 2018 iii Abstract In this thesis, Francis of Assisi's vocation of humility is given its unique place in the heritage of Christian humility, and situated in relation to the early Franciscan vocation of humility that followed and the Bonaventurian vocation of humility that then concluded the infancy of First Order Franciscan development. Francis's vocation of humility was constituted by a unique blend of subjection, self- sacrifice, inversion, and freedom from worldly constraints. The characteristics that these elements gave rise to included: living the Gospel and the Rule, seeking to be the Lesser Brother in every sense, loving and honouring all brothers equally, obedience, humility in deeds and words, and the exhibition of humility that could not be mistaken for lack of strength or determination. These elements and characteristics form a framework with which to analyse the subsequent early First Order vocation of humility and the vocation of humility under Bonaventure. Studying these three vocations highlights continuities and divergences in formation and complexion. -

We know that Spiritual Assistant Reflections 2 it is a time of waiting and preparation for the birth of Formation Assignment 3 Jesus, “Our Messiah”. Celebrating Advent has a very Consecration Prayer 3 long history in our Church. As I read on, I recalled St. Agnes of Assisi 4 that lighting the candles should remind us that Jesus November Meeting Minutes 5-6 is the light of the world. The evergreens represent My God & My All 6 the new life and eternal life we have in Jesus. We use Twelve Days of Christmas 7 four candles – one for each week of Advent. Three 2019 -2020 Calendar 8 are purple and one is rose/pink. We light the pink Patience 8 one on Gaudete Sunday. The word Gaudete means Prayer Requests 9 “Rejoice”! The three purple candles represent Fraternity Council 10 prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Did you think that Meetings 10 was reserved only for Lent? During this time it is Newsletter 10 important that we set aside time for prayer, reading Treasurer’s Report 10 the scripture, silence, reflection and of course Birthdays 10 participate in the Sacramental life of our Church. chapter 21 The Franciscan Heritage in England (c. 1240–c. 1350) Michael J.P. Robson St Francis of Assisi was one of the most striking and colourful saints in the Western Church. The son of a prosperous merchant in the Umbrian city of Assisi, he swapped his life of wealth and privilege for one of penance and evangelical poverty in imitation of Jesus Christ and his apostles.The ministry of the Son of God provided the template for Francis’s vocation and liberated him from the shackles of possessions and wealth. After spending about two years repairing churches in the environs of Assisi, the key to his vocation was found in the reading of the Gospel during Mass at the rural chapel of Santa Maria degli Angeli. The text in which the apostles were dispatched to proclaim the Gospel (Matthew 10:9–10, Luke 9:2, Mark 6:7–13) challenged Francis to do the same. Obeying the Scriptures to the letter, he returned to the city of his birth where he called upon his former neighbours to change their lives by embracing penance for their failings. The citizens of Assisi recognized that Francis had undergone a radical change and that his former profligacy and affluence had given way to the apostolic life with a heightened concern for the guidance conveyed by the Scriptures. 1 St Francis and the English Province One inhabitant of Assisi, Bernard of Quintavalle, was so curious about Fran- cis’s new life that he invited him to supper.
