E kaabo (eh-kah-bow). Welcome.

Frances Bradley, Columnist [email protected] Volume Burks, Photographer And I’m Telling You, Jennifer Holliday + EWC Concert Choir + the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra = the 11th Annual Fine Arts Scholarship Benefit Concert. This evening of elegance and magnifi- cent entertainment brought to a close the Edward Waters College Homecoming Weekend activities. The scholarship concert is held annually as a fundraising effort to benefit students at the college. The event was sup- ported by many corporate sponsors, patrons, and advertisers including: Florida Blue, Brennan, Manna & Diamond Law Firm, Fifth Third Bank, Jacksonville Port Authority, Bethel A.M.E. Church of Tallahassee, Florida, Dr. James Ewers and Family, The Law Office of Craig Gibbs, Jacksonville Orthodontics, Atty. Kay Harper and The Harper Law Firm, Jacksonville Transportation Authority, and The Florida Star/Georgia Star Newspaper. At the VIP reception, Ms. Holliday graciously greeted and took photos with individuals and the Concert Choir. The program began with opening remarks from EWC alumnus and President Nathaniel Glover. It’s hard to believe that a year has passed since Mr. Glover introduced the 10th Annual concert, a day after the inaugural ceremonies which installed him as president of the college. The Edward Waters College Concert Choir and the Jacksonville Symphony - with EWC Concert Choir Director Barbara McNeely-Bouie conducting - performed arrangements by several noted composers, among them Wolfgang, Amadeus Mozart and Richard Smallwood. Ms. Holliday, accompanied by the Symphony and her musical director on piano, sang a medley of tunes made famous by Ella Fitzgerald (she joked that she hadn’t learned to scat like Ella), such as “A Tisket, A Tasket” and “How High the Moon”, a Richard Smallwood composition, “Psalm 8”, performed with the Concert Choir, Duke Ellington’s “Come Sunday” (a recording which won her a second Grammy), and “One Night Only” and “I’m Changing”, tunes from , the Broadway production for which she won a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical as the character Effie Jennifer Holliday White. She closed the evening with her signature song from Dreamgirls, “And I’m Telling You, I’m Not Going” which garnered a Grammy Award (her first) for Best R&B Female Vocalist. The Benefit Concert Planning Committee was: Congresswoman Corrine Brown, Honorary Chairperson, Madeline Scales-Taylor, Chairperson, Von Alexander, Jacquie Gibbs, Jackie Gray, Eric Johnson, President, EWC National Alumni Association, Cheryl Lawson Wright, Charlene Taylor-Hill, J. Russell Richardson, and EWC staff, Wanda Willis, Assistant Vice-President, C. Blake Hacht, Coordinator for Public Relations, and Stavius Powell, Alumni Affairs Coordinator.

It’s official. The Atlanta Falcons are number one! Going into weeks six, the Falcons are the only team undefeated team left in the league now that the Green Bay Packers packed a punch when they served the Houston Texans their first loss of the season with 42-24 on Sunday. Earlier that day, we saw the Falcons hold off the Oakland Raiders in a 23-20 on Sunday largely in part to Asante Samuel and Matt Bryant. The Falcons will take on the Philadelphia Eagles this weekend. Sunday’s win also marked a milestone for head coach Mike Smith who is now tied with Dan Reeves as having the most wins in Falcons history. (BPT) - A recent survey, released by TD Ameritrade Holding Corporation, found that among the parents of Generation Z (who range from ages 13 to 22), 58 percent say they took out student loans to fund their own college ed- ucation, and, of those, 43 percent report they are still repaying those loans. Considering their parents’ struggles with college debt, it comes as no surprise that Gen Z is eager to ensure they graduate with as little debt as pos- sible. Among this group of young adults, 39 percent cited that paying for col- lege was a top concern, while another 39 percent said they were also concerned about having a large student loan balance. The following tips are for families gearing up for college: 1. Calculate the costs While a quick online search can give families an idea of college expenses, predicting future costs can be a bit more challenging. There are a number of free online resources available that can help parents and teens estimate how much they’ll need to save for college so they can get a solid plan in place. 2. Explore your savings options Parents and teens should work together to research college savings options like 529 college savings plans, Coverdell Education Savings Accounts and custodial accounts. Once they decide on a plan that will work for them, the saving can begin. 3. Turn talk into action Once a college savings plan is established, parents and teens should follow through on their planning and make a conscious effort to save.
