South Gippsland Shire is located about 130 kilometres south-east of Melbourne and includes . The most populous community is . Population growth has been lower than average since 2002 and this trend is projected to continue to 2022. The 15-44 age bracket is underrepresented in the population, while those aged 45 and older are overrepresented. Cultural diversity is low, with 5% born in a non-English speaking country and 3.4% speaking a language other than English at home. Crime rates are low, while volunteering and citizen engagement are high and the unemployment rate is one of the lowest in the state. The percentage of low income individuals is higher than average, and the median household income is below the state average. Mortgage stress is slightly higher than average, despite relatively low median house prices, and the rate of car ownership is one of the highest in the state. 80% of students attend government schools, one of the highest percentages in the state. The percentage of persons reporting heart disease is higher than average, cancer incidence is also high, and more than 17% of the population are reported to be consuming alcohol at risky levels. Cancer screening participation rates are high, particularly for bowel cancer. Avoidable deaths due to cardiovascular diseases are well above average. The most frequently attended public hospital is the Leongatha Memorial Hospital which accounts for around 27% of public hospital separations in the LGA. Emergency department presentations, including primary care type presentations, are lower than average, as are GP attendances. The rates of HACC clients per 1,000 population are well above average.
