High protein diets may lower blood pressure To make the most of a dults who consume a high-protein diet may Abe at a lower risk for developing high blood pressure, research shows. workout, experts say Researchers from Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) found that participants con- suming highest amount of protein (an average set the proper pace of 100 gram protein/day) had a 40 percent lower risk of having high blood pressure compared to the lowest intake level. “Protein intake may play a role in the long- term prevention of high blood pressure,” said Lynn Moore, an associate professor of medicine at BUSM. During the study, researchers analysed pro- tein intakes of healthy participants and followed them for development of high blood pressure over an 11-year period. They found that adults who consumed more protein, whether from animal or plant sources, had statistically significantly lower systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure levels after four years of follow-up. “We also found that consuming more dietary protein also was associated with lower long-term risks for high blood pressure,” Moore noted. When the diet also was characterised by higher intakes of fibre, higher protein intakes led to 40-60 percent reductions in high blood pressure risk. “The findings suggest that we need to revisit optimal protein intake for optimal heart health,” researchers concluded in the study reported in By Dorene Internicola the American Journal of Hypertension. moderate level, push into harder exercises to a point of highest hether the goal is In a 45-to expenditure about 30 to 40 min- Vitamin B1 deficiency to finish a mara- utes in, then drop back down till thon, polish a ten- 60-minute class, the heart rate returns to its rest- can damage your brain Wnis game or make people start at a ing state,” Cyrus explained. nclude more vitamin B1-rich food in your diet the most of that hour at the Interval training, which Ias neurologists have underlined that deficiency gym, fitness experts say pacing moderate level, involves alternating high inten- of a single vitamin B1 (or thiamine) can cause a can spell the difference between sity exercise with recovery peri- potentially fatal brain disorder. success and stagnation. push into harder ods, is another way classes are The brain disorder called Wernicke encepha- Setting the proper work- paced, according to Cyrus. lopathy typically occurs in people who have dis- out pace, or the distribution of exercises to a Neal Pire, a strength and orders such as alcoholism and anorexia that lead energy during exercise, deflects conditioning specialist with the to malnourishment. boredom and fatigue, syncs body point of highest American College of Sports “Wernicke encephalopathy is an example of and mind, and enables the eve- expenditure about Medicine, said the talk test, also the wide range of brain diseases called encepha- ryday exerciser to keep pushing called the ventilatory thresh- lopathies that are caused by metabolic disorders the envelope. 30 to 40 minutes old (VT) is a good way for the and toxic substances,” said Matthew McCoyd, a Dr Kevin G Thompson, author individual exerciser to gauge neurologist at Loyola University Medical Center of Pacing: Individual Strategies for in, then drop back intensity. in the US. HealthKit, which is still under development, is the centre of a new healthcare system by Apple. Regulated medical devices, such as glucose monitors with accompanying iPhone apps, can send informa- tion to HealthKit. With a patient’s consent, Apple’s service gathers data from various health apps so that it can be viewed by doctors in one place. Stanford University Hospital doctors said they are working with Apple to let physicians track blood sugar levels for children with diabetes. Duke University is developing a pilot to track blood pres- sure, weight and other measurements for patients with cancer or heart disease. The goal is to improve the accuracy and speed of reporting data, which often is done by phone and fax now. Potentially doctors would be able to warn patients of an impending problem. The pilot pro- grammes will be rolled out in the coming weeks. Apple last week mentioned the trials in a news release announcing the latest version of its operating system for phones and tablets, iOS 8, but this is the first time any details have been made public. Apple declined to comment. HYPER SUDOKU How to play Kakuro: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once.
