Narrative Report

I am seeking promotion to the rank of Associate Professor of Psychiatry. My area of excellence is Clinical Expertise and Innovation, and Investigation is my significant supporting activity. I devote 30% of my time to teaching/supervision, 30% to administration, 30% to research, and 10% to clinical practice. My chief career goal is to advance clinical innovation and science in the area of spirituality and mental health. Clinically, I am staunchly committed to an evidence-based approach to psychotherapy, and my primary modality is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). I have been fortunate to create, test, and disseminate four psychotherapy manuals outlining how to assess for and address patient spirituality in the context of evidence-based psychiatric care, and author a full-length text entitled Spirituality-Religion & Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: A Guide for Clinicians (Guilford Press; May 2018). One of my psychotherapy manuals (dubbed SPIRIT: Spiritual Psychotherapy for Inpatient, Residential & Intensive Treatment), is presently being used by > 20 clinicians in 13 units across the divisional structure of McLean Hospital, to provide spiritually-integrated treatment to over 80 patients each week (~3,500 patient visits/year). The above work has garnered regional and national interest in the form of regular workshops at academic conferences (Association for Behavioral & Cognitive Therapies [ABCT], 2012, 2013, 2014, 2017, 2018 & 2019), invited talks/workshops at the Anxiety & Depression Association of America, Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Columbia University Spirituality Mind-Body Institute, Palm Beach Mental Health Association, Iowa Department of Public Health and Indiana Council on Problem Gambling, and an invited presidential session at the American Psychiatric Association’s 2019 annual convention. I have also been invited for international talks/workshops at Hebrew University, Tel Aviv University, and at the World Psychiatric Association Section on Religion, Spirituality & Psychiatry in Jerusalem, Israel.

34 As a clinical scientist, my program of research moves beyond the descriptive realm by examining explanatory models of why and how both positive and negative facets of spirituality can functionally impact psychiatric symptoms and their treatment. I have been a principal investigator on 15 studies to date which have received over $1,000,000 in support (mostly private donations). Approximately half of my research has focused on the Jewish community, with the other half has examined how spirituality and religion relate to mental health among psychiatric patients more broadly. Recognizing the importance of reaching beyond the ivory tower, I am also proud to serve as a regular media interviewee, columnist, and invited lecturer at community events on research in my area of interest. As faculty of an HMS teaching hospital, most of my educational responsibilities involve clinical supervision. I meet for at least one hour weekly with our hospital chaplain to provide clinical supervision and ensure that spiritual care is consistent with evidence based practices. I also consult regularly (approximately 2 hours/month) to clinicians throughout McLean Hospital on how to assess for and address patient spirituality using an evidence-based psychotherapy framework. Beyond these duties I give didactic seminars on spirituality and mental health at McLean and other HMS hospitals on a semi-regular basis (2-6 hours/year). I also aspire to help disseminate CBT to religious communities, which tend to be underserviced with evidence-based care. Principally, I have worked within the Orthodox Jewish community, of which I am a member. To this end, on a part time basis (6-8 hours/week), I direct a private outpatient program, which provides culturally- and spiritually-sensitive CBT. I am also a regular columnist, speaker, and consultant for Jewish periodicals and organizations on matters related to mental health and I have served as an academic advisor to many students of psychology and related disciplines who seek to work within the Jewish community. I feel truly blessed to have both clinical and research expertise to approach the understudied yet important area of spirituality and mental health, and the necessary skills to help communities in need. I hope to continue to build a national and international reputation as a leader by disseminating the clinical protocols I have developed, and continuing to advance the science in this area.
