(Hortense Spillers) The aim of this volume is to intervene both in the ways women inherit the past and open up towards the future, mobilizing feminist epistemology and feminist legacy in order to establish the agenda of a hospitable Europe and a collaborative world, a humanistic university and a peer reading sisterhood instead of the fallacy of excellence and academic proficiency. It is the critical incentive for the authors of the contributions presented here – who use different conceptual approaches to theory, history and cultural texts, but also to women’s lives, experiences and legacies – to reveal the strategies that we have used and still use in historical and sociocultural locations in order to confront the ‘foreclusionary structures’ of the grand narratives and to establish a more intimate relationship with the ghosts of a traumatic past and the promises of a future that cannot be fully anticipated. Although most authors focus on the theoretical reverberation of silenced, neglected and insufficiently explored women’s discourses, social criticism is the corollary of a shared endeavor – encouraged by the Dubrovnik feminist course1 – because, as Linda Nicholson notices: ¹ The edited volume Disrupting Historicity, Reclaiming the Future consists of selected proceedings from three sessions of the postgraduate course Feminisms in a Transnational Perspective (held in May 2014, 2015, and 2016 respectively). This postgraduate course started in 2007 at the Inter-University Centre Dubrovnik, an independent international centre for advanced studies, in order to connect feminist scholars and activists from the North and South of Europe with the idea 6 — DISRUPTING HISTORICITY, RECLAIMING THE FUTURE Social criticism without philosophy is not possible, and without social criticism the project of a feminist theory, which is committed at once to knowledge and to the emancipatory interests of women is inconceivable. Social criticism needs philosophy precisely because the narratives of our cultures are so conflictual and irreconcilable that, even when one appeals to them, a certain ordering of one’s normative priorities and a clarification of those principles in the name of which one speaks is unavoidable.2 This volume offers a constative, performative and eventful act of social criticism through the thoughts and practices, the arguments and forms of the presented essays. All and singularly, the contributions are organized around four areas of militant debate: ‘Herstories‘, ‘Foremothers‘, ‘Revisions‘, ‘The Future‘. The commitment is here declared through the engagement that ‘History’ must be, individually and collectively, changed in ‘Herstories’, inscribing a transformation in belonging and in plurality, the deviation of historical universality into the particularity and relevance of the tales that give voice to the female capacity to ‘disrupt’ the order, the norm, the patriarchal authority of the discourse, thus transforming the archive of the ‘one’ and of the ‘unique’ into new and unexplored areas of future and productive encounters among women. It is the recovery and the discovery of what in/of their stories has been historically kept at the margin, a recovery and discovery that positions itself on the border (the essays revendicate their being ‘late’, ‘off-center’, ‘outside’, ‘experimental’, ‘utopian’!) which becomes the liminal place where to illuminate the blind spots of History/city, in its normative project aimed at the invisibility and hypostatization of women – indeed, the opening essay of the volume deconstructs the ‘eternal present’ entrusted and imposed on women in their historical un-presence (Sanja Milutinović Bojanić). It is a transformative capacity that unfolds in the section that follows: for the creation of ‘Herstories’, it is necessary to learn from our ‘Foremothers’, by creating and recreating, always already, legacies across times and experiences, by opening the Matriarchive of developing it into a transnational platform of exchanging knowledge among feminist teachers and students. During the twelve years of the regular program the course was attended by more than two hundred participants from all over the world and the papers presented within its frame have been published in five edited volumes (publications in English

    JUDITH LORBER The Variety of Feminisms and their Contribution to Gender Equality Introduction My focus is the continuities and discontinuities in recent feminist ideas and perspectives. I am going to discuss the development of feminist theories as to the sources of gender inequality and its pervasiveness, and the different feminist political solutions and remedies based on these theories. I will be combining ideas from different feminist writers, and usually will not be talking about any specific writers. A list of readings can be found at the end. Each perspective has made important contributions to improving women's status, but each also has limitations. Feminist ideas of the past 35 years changed as the limitations of one set of ideas were critiqued and addressed by what was felt to be a better set of ideas about why women and men were so unequal. It has not been a clear progression by any means, because many of the debates went on at the same time. As a matter of fact, they are still going on. And because all of the feminist perspectives have insight into the problems of gender inequality, and all have come up with good strategies for remedying these problems, all the feminisms are still very much with us. Thus, there are continuities and convergences, as well as sharp debates, among the different feminisms. Any one feminist may incorporate ideas from several perspec- tives, and many feminists have shifted their perspectives over the years. I myself was originally a liberal feminist, then a so- 8 JUDITH LORBER cialist feminist, and now consider myself to be primarily a so- cial construction feminist, with overtones of postmodernism and queer theory.

Andreasen Aalborg University Magdalene Lauridsen (1873–1957): Danish pioneer in the field of home economics ABSTRACT: Magdalene Lauridsen (1873–1957) founded the first Danish school of home economics 1895 and later, in 1903, the first teacher training college of home economics and housekeeping. She initiated the Association of Teachers in Housekeeping and Home Economics, and the Danish Home Economics and Housekeeping Movement. She fought for the educational rights of women from especially rural areas and was very active in representing the women’s movement in local politics. In this paper, we ask, what characterised her activities in a wider historical perspective and how did she happen to play this particular role in adult education? We analyse these questions by drawing on Nordic studies of women’s role in contemporary society and thus frame it by the history sociology of gender. The empirical material includes both primary and secondary sources to illuminate the life and activities of Magdalene Lauridsen. We conclude the analysis by emphasizing the influences from abroad and from growing up in an active Folk High School environment that made her a pioneer in adult education. Introduction Magdalene Lauridsen (1873–1957) was one of the most intriguing fig- ures of Scandinavian adult education during the first half of the 20th century. At a time when women’s social roles were restricted to caring for the home, to providing for a husband, and to having limited access to education, she was a pioneer in launching itinerant courses and evening classes for farmers’ wives and other country homemakers.

    5 weaPons of mass seduction Performing Pop Masculinity To all intents and purposes Harry Styles, unofficial frontman of internationally renowned boy band One Direction, could easily be mistaken for a young Mick Jagger (see Figure 5.1). The men’s good looks, broad smiles, matching windswept hair styles and shared fashion sensibilities bridge a 51-year age gap. Both are singers who have enjoyed the adoration of a passionate fan following, yet in terms of the version of masculinity each represents, the two could not be more different. While Jagger is openly admired by both sexes, few men admit to being fans of Harry Styles whose following is commonly depicted as restricted to teen and pre-teen females. Unlike the older man, Styles radiates a wholesome, good humoured exuberance, appears to genuinely like female company and is never happier than when exalting the women in his life. He also differs from the Rolling Stones leader in showing a marked preference for older female partners, whereas Jagger figure 5.1 Harry Styles. 84 Weapons of Mass Seduction is always seen in the company of much younger women.1 Jagger’s androgy- nous charm is tinged with danger and more than a hint of misogyny: he has a reputation for treating his partners callously, and from the outset, chauvinism themes of mistrust permeated the Rolling Stones’ songbook.2 The younger singer is also androgynous but his failure to comply with core characteristics of normative masculinity underscores much of the antipathy directed towards by critics, highlighting deeply entrenched prejudice against those who fail to comply with accepted expressions of gender.

She couldn’t travel to church any longer, but we made it a point to meet at her home late in the afternoon once or twice a month to talk politics, gardening, and religion, drink gin and tonics, and pray together.

The key contestations have revolved around three issues: First, the question of who constitutes a woman; second, what constitute feminist interests; and third, how trans* politics intersects with feminist politics. Despite decades of debates and scholarship, these impasses remain unbroken. In this article, our aim is to work out a way through these impasses. We argue that all three types of contestations are deeply invested in notions of identity, and therefore dealt with in an identitarian way. This has not been constructive in resolving the antagonistic relationship between the trans* movement and feminism. We aim to disentangle the antagonism within anti-trans* feminist politics on the one hand, and trans* politics’ responses to that antagonism on the other. In so doing, we argue for a politics of status-based recognition (drawing on Fraser, 2000a, 2000b) instead of identity-based recognition, highlighting individuals’ specific needs in soci- ety rather than women’s common interests (drawing on Jónasdóttir, 1991), and conceptualising the intersections of the trans* movement and feminism as mutually shaping rather than as trans* as additive to the feminist project (drawing on Walby, 2007, and Walby, Armstrong, and Strid, 2012).
