I arrived in South Australia from Germany in July 2009 and stayed here for nine months as a part of the Study Abroad Program. I chose to study at Henley High because I liked the subjects which are taught at Henley High especially Chemistry and the dif- ferent Sport Programs. In Germany every student studies 10-12 from which he can choose 2-4 subjects so I was really surprised that in Australia every student just has to choose 4-6 subjects. However, because of this the school days down here are more relaxed and you can specify on the topics you really like to do. The subjects I most enjoyed were Soccer and Chemistry because the easiest ways to make contact with Australian students were sport and the practical parts of Chemistry. The most memorable experience of my studying at Henley High was probably the day when we built our own fire extinguisher in Chemistry and a student blew up his beaker. I think I will never forget his astonished face. After these nine months I go back home with great memories and friends who I hope to see again one day. However, first I have to finish school back in Germany and then we will see what comes next. Fabian Tigges

Special mention too must be made of the stage management (student Amy Davies with assistance by Zach Davies) and sound (by teacher Jen Hostetler). Both were seamless in their execution and vital in a production that required such varying moods and shifts in the story. So too kudos to Multi-media operator Kerrin White (projecting black and white city scenes of buildings and buildings between the written narration) and lighting by Josh Smart of Multi-Vision Australia. HENLEY INVOLVED IN BREAKING RECORD

On Wednesday August 18th Henley High School was a part of a successful attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the world’s largest interactive weather report. The attempt was or- ganised by the Weather Channel as part of National Science Week and involved 502 schools across Australia measuring the air tem- perature in their school yards at 12 noon EST. This comfortably beat the previous record, set in March this year by the BBC, of 261 schools.

The temperature at Henley High was measured at 17.4oC using an electronic data logger connected to a laptop computer. The meas- urements were taken by members of the year 11 physics class with support from a group of visiting students from Koishikawa in Japan.

Measurements came from every state and territory in Australia and varied from 3oC recorded by Snowy Mountains Grammar School to 36oC at Mutchilba State School in Queensland.

Henley High School students, together with students from Koishikawa, help to break the world record.

News Henley High School Educating the future HENLEY INVITATIONAL TEAMS’ GOLF TOURNAMENT As a further initiative to promote school golf in Adelaide, the Henley High School Specialist Golf Program conducted the second annual ‘Henley Invitational’ teams’ event on Thursday August 12th at Grange GC West Course. The tournament comprised 20 teams of three golfers from 10 different schools & colleges (all with official club handicaps) who competed in a teams’ stableford competition for a donated trophy and golf prizes. This involvement of 60 young golfers was an increase of 12 from 2009 numbers.

The golfers had a 1.00 pm shotgun start from holes 1-12 on the Grange West course and then played 18 holes of stableford. Weather conditions were cool and breezy and not ideal for good scoring but when all players had completed their round, the Pulteney Grammar School team of Jarrod Marsland (43 pts), Rachel Taylor (39) & Nick Taylor (25) were announced the winners of the event with 107 total points. Henley No. 5 (106 pts) with Katelyn Ryles (32), Jordan Bishop (39) & Ben Tucker (35) finished a very close 2nd while Seaton High (Jake Stockley 34, Colin Coleman 38 & Michael Coleman 31) came 3rd with 103 pts.

The Pulteney team was presented with the trophy by Henley Principal, Liz Schneyder, at a brief Presentation ceremony in the Beeston Lounge at Grange. After such a successful second tournament, we hope to again increase the number of schools and teams involved in 2011.

With many of the group having limited exposure to the sport, the first few sessions had bowls heading in every direction across the rinks. With some expert input from Geoff Ellis and the other members of the Lockleys Bowls Club, students refined their technique and were able to produce some excellent results.

The unit was accented by a pairs tournament over three days which involved some very spirited competition. Named in memory of PE student Corey Seimers, students used knowledge, strategy and skill to compete for the Corey Seimers Memorial Shield which was kindly donated by the PE class of 2010. After a high quality finals series, top seeded pair Matthew Northcott and Lucy Adamopoulos were able to handle the pressure to beat the field and win the shield.

Well done to all of the Year 12 students and a big thankyou to Geoff and the members of Lockleys Bowls Club. James Treagus and Tim Kloeden Stage II Physical Education
