Elijah and Elisha A NATION DIVIDED: Elijah and Elisha (The Gospel Project Volume 5 Unit 13: Customized from the Preschool, Younger, and Older Leader Guides) BIG PICTURE QUESTION FOR THIS UNIT: How many gods are there? There is one true God. KEY PASSAGE FOR THIS UNIT: Isaiah 42:8 “I am the Lord; that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to carved idols.” TODAY’S LESSON: Elijah at Mount Carmel (1Kings 18-19) PARENT/LEADER OVERVIEW: King Ahab was an evil king. In fact, “Ahab did more to provoke the LORD God of Israel than all the kings of Israel who were before him” (1 Kings 16:33). God wanted His people to be faithful to Him, but King Ahab led them away from God. God chose Elijah to get Ahab’s attention. In 1 Kings 17, Elijah told Ahab that a drought was coming. God prevented rain in the land for three years. For Ahab, a man who worshiped Baal—the false Canaanite god of rain and fertility—the drought sent a strong message about the one true God. When God was ready to send rain on the earth, Elijah appeared to Ahab and instructed him to gather the Israelites and the prophets of Baal at Mount Carmel. Elijah challenged the people to choose: Follow God or follow Baal. They couldn’t do both. Elijah set up a challenge to prove who is the one true God. He faced off against the prophets of Baal. They prepared a bull on an altar and called on their deity to send fire from heaven. The prophets of Baal called and cried and cut themselves, but Baal did not answer. Elijah poured water on and around his altar. He called to God, and God sent fire from heaven. Everything was burned up! The Israelites could not deny that the God of Elijah is the one true God. Finally, God sent a great rain to end the drought. Elijah fled from the wrath of Ahab’s wife, Jezebel. He met with God on a mountain, and God revealed Himself to Elijah in a soft whisper. God gave Elijah a friend and successor in Elisha and assured him of Younger Kids Leader Guide Unit 13, Session 2 © 2019 LifeWay 7,000 people in Israel who had not turned to Baal. PREPARING YOUR CHILDREN FOR GOD’S WORD: Make sure that your children have a Bible with them even if they are too young to read. Have your kids sing along with the worship songs that are posted for this week. THE BIBLE STORY: (Video teaching online) No rain fell in the land of Israel for three years. God was punishing the people for turning away from Him to worship false gods. Without rain, the lakes and rivers dried up. People could not grow crops in the fields. Finally, God was ready to send rain. God told Elijah to go to Ahab, the king of Israel. So Elijah obeyed God. Elijah told the king, “Meet me at Mount Carmel. Bring the people of Israel and the prophets who worship false gods.” King Ahab and the people met Elijah at the mountain. Elijah said, “Make up your minds! If you believe the LORD is God, follow Him; but if Baal (BAY uhl), then follow him.” Elijah set up a challenge to show who is the one true God. The prophets of the false god Baal set up an altar first and put a bull on it. Elijah said, “Call to Baal and ask him to send fire to your altar. I will call on the LORD. The God who answers by sending fire is the one true God.” The prophets of Baal danced and cried out for hours. “Answer us!” they said. But no one answered. “Shout loudly!” Elijah taunted them. “Maybe he is sleeping!” Still, no answer. Then the people gathered around Elijah. He set up an altar, dug a trench around it, and put a bull on it. Elijah told the people to pour water on the altar so everything was wet. Then Elijah prayed: “LORD, answer me so that these people will know that You, LORD, are God.” God sent fire from the sky. It burned up the bull, the wood, the stones, and the dust! It dried up the water in the trench. When the people saw this, they fell facedown and said, “The LORD, He is God! The LORD, He is God!” Elijah had all the prophets who worshiped Baal killed. The sky grew dark with clouds, and God sent a great rain. King Ahab told Queen Jezebel everything that Elijah had done. Jezebel wanted to kill Elijah, so Elijah fled into the wilderness. He walked to Mount Horeb. At the mountain, God spoke to Elijah and encouraged him to not give up. APPLICATION: We often set up contests to see who is better. We play in sports tournaments to see who the better teams are; we run races to see who is fastest; we give awards to the best movies and singers; and we even have science fairs to judge who has the coolest experiments. In a way, that’s exactly what Elijah was doing in our story. The rules of the contest were clear. Both “teams” were asked to call on the one they worshiped to send fire. The results were clear: the prophets of Baal worshiped a false god with no power. Even though the prophets of Baal spent all day dancing, singing, and pleading with Baal, and even though Elijah poured water all over and around his altar, God was the only One who responded. He is the only One who could respond! God showed that He is the one true God. Elijah trusted in God, and God used Elijah to prove His Younger Kids Leader Guide Unit 13, Session 2 © 2019 LifeWay awesome power. In some ways, obeying God made Elijah’s life more difficult! The queen heard about what happened and wanted to kill Elijah, but God helped Elijah keep going. The most incredible show of God’s power came when Jesus died on the cross and rose again. Jesus proved that He is God the Son and He has power over everything, including sin and death. CHRIST CONNECTION: The people who worshiped the false god Baal danced and cried out for hours to show that they loved Baal. But the one true God is not like the false gods. We do not have to work hard to show God we love Him. Instead, He showed His love for us by sending His Son, Jesus. Jesus died to rescue us from sin, and He hears us when we cry out to Him. The Bible teaches that we love because God loved us first [See 1 John 4:19.] When we believe the truth about Jesus, God forgives our sin and makes us new. Then the Holy Spirit lives in us. He gives us power from God to love and obey Jesus more. FAMILY DISCUSSION STARTERS: 2-5 Year Olds: What happened when the prophets of Baal called out to Baal? (No one answered.) What happened when the Elijah prayed? (God answered Elijah by sending fire from the sky!) What happened after Elijah’s altar was set on fire by God? (God sent the rain.) How many gods are there? There is one true God. How is the one true God different than false gods? (We do not have to work hard to show God we love Him. Instead, God showed His love for us by sending His Son, Jesus, to be the Savior of the world.) Kindergarten-2nd Grade: How long had the drought lasted when Elijah challenged the prophets of Baal? (three years, 1 Kings 18:1) How long did the prophets of Baal cry out to Baal? (morning until noon and all afternoon, 1 Kings 18:26,29) What did God’s fire burn up? (everything—the offering, wood, altar, and water; 1 Kings 18:38) Why is it important to know God is all-powerful? Guide kids to see that we can trust God because He is all-powerful, good, and loving. He can do what He wishes, which is always for His glory and our good. Why do we put other things before God? Guide your kids to see that we have sin in our hearts. We naturally desire to do things our own way, and we often doubt God’s goodness. When we wonder if God is doing what is best, we often think we know better than He does and choose to put other things before Him. How can we help other people see that God is the one true God? Guide your kids to see that Elijah received specific instructions from God. It would not be wise for us to try to “test” God. Instead, we can tell people about Jesus and help them understand the Bible in order to show that God is the one true God. 3rd-5th Grade: The prophets of Baal tried to prove their love so that their god would hear them. How is the one true Younger Kids Leader Guide Unit 13, Session 2 © 2019 LifeWay God different than false gods like Baal? Lead your kids to recognize how God showed His love to us by sending His Son. Point out that salvation from God is a gift; we don’t earn it by doing good things or loving God in a certain way. We obey God and love Him in response to who He is and what He has done for us.

Perceptions of Religion from Star Wars and Star Trek Abstract Hollywood films and eligionr have an ongoing rocky relationship, especially in the realm of science fiction. A brief comparison study of the two giants of mainstream sci-fi, Star Wars and Star Trek reveals the differing attitudes toward religion expressed in the genre. Star Trek presents an evolving perspective, from critical secular humanism to begrudging personalized faith, while Star Wars presents an ambiguous mythological foundation for mystical experience that is in more ways universal. From its humble beginnings, "Sci- Fi" has been used to express the desires and dreams of those generations who looked up at the stars and imagined life on other planets and space travel, those who actually saw the beginning of the space age, and those who still dare to imagine a universe with wonders beyond what we have today.

  • Week 1 Elijah the Prophet Wednesday Bible Study
Week 1 Elijah the Prophet Wednesday Bible Study Elijah and Ahab 1 Kings 16:29-17:6 After the death of Solomon in 931 BC, the kingdom of Israel split into a northern and southern kingdom. Solomon’s son, Rehoboam the rightful heir, ruled in the Southern Kingdom of Judah, with the real capital of Jerusalem. His kingdom was made up of two tribes, Judah and Benjamin. The northern kingdom of Israel was led by Jeroboam and was made up of the other ten tribes. Samaria was its capital. Elijah was called by God to be a prophet primarily to the northern king- dom of Israel in 870 BC. His name means “My God is Yahweh”. He served during the reigns of Ahab and Ahaziah in Israel. Two of the most evil kings in Israel’s his- tory. 1. A Wicked King. 1 Kings 16:29-34 Ahab did more evil in the sight of the Lord that any king before him. vs.30 He considered it trivial the sins of Jeroboam: 1 Kings 12:25-33; He married a foreign woman, forbidden by God’s law. Deut. 7:3-4. Ahab formalized Baal worship in Israel. Baal (storm-god Hadad) was the most important God among the Canaanite peoples. Israel, divided or undivided was continually tempted to adulterate themselves and worship this false God.. In Ancient Near Eastern thought, the plural Baals referred to various attributes of the one Baal, however came to be thought of as independent gods by some. Worship of Baal involved human sacrifice, Incense and other sacrifice and fertility rights.

  • “Defending the Deity of Christ” a Ready Defense Against the False Claims of Jehovah’S Witness’
“Defending the Deity of Christ” A ready defense against the false claims of Jehovah’s Witness’ In Matthew 16:15, at a crucial part in His ministry Jesus asked the disciples, “…who do you say that I am?” The answer to this question is more important than anything else. Nevertheless, today, just as in Jesus’ day, when Christians ask people the question “who do you say Jesus is?” there are various answers given concerning his identity. Understanding the deity of Jesus is very vital in defending the truth of the Christian faith. You can find out very quickly what a cult believes when you ask them this first question and that is “who do you say Jesus is?” Jesus identity will tell you if that person believes Christ is God or not. One of the most prominent false cults is Jehovah’s Witness’, which also is known in part as the Watchtower Society. In New York they print many publications and tracts, called The Watchtower Bible and Tract Society, (WTBTS). Gotquestions.com explains their beginnings this way, “The sect known today as the Jehovah’s Witnesses started out in Pennsylvania in 1870 as a Bible class led by Charles Taze Russell. Russell named his group the “Millennial Dawn Bible Study,” and those who followed him were called “Bible students.” Charles T. Russell began writing a series of books he called “The Millennial Dawn,” which stretched to six volumes before his death and contained much of the theology Jehovah’s Witnesses now hold. The Watchtower Bible and Tract Society was founded in 1886 and quickly became the vehicle through which the “Millennial Dawn” movement began distributing their views.

The Existence of Satan – There is scarcely a culture, tribe, or society to be found in this world that does not have some concept or fear of an invisible evil power. This has been attested by Christian missionaries and secular anthropologists alike. Witch doctors, shrunken heads, voodoo dolls, and totem poles all give dramatic evidence of this universal fear. One may well ask where this fear came from and of whom are they afraid. The study of the doctrine of Satan may not thrill the soul of man, but it will answer these questions. A. His existence is doubted by the world. 1. As shown by the typical “Walt Disney cartoon concept” – Most of the world today pictures the devil as a medieval and mythical two-horned, fork-tailed impish creature, dressed in red flannel underwear, busily pitching coal into the furnace of hell.

  • How Can a Religious Person Tolerate Other Religions?
ARTICLES AND ESSAYS How Can a Religious Person Tolerate Other Religions? Dennis Prager WHEN I WAS IN MY EARLY TWENTIES, a prominent American rabbi, Yitz Greenberg, once heard me lecture to a Jewish group. I was offering comparisons between Judaism and other religions. Afterward he complimented me on my speech but warned me to resist the great temptation to compare the best of one's own religion to the worst of other religions. It was a very important warning. It is so terribly easy and gratify- ing to compare the most refined thinking of your own religion to the most superficial in another. You win the debate every time. In that regard, if God acts in our lives —a proposition over which I have some conflicting opinions — he certainly arranged my radio show, KABC's "Religion on the Line." For eight years, every Sunday night, for two commercial-free hours, I have dialogued with Protestants and Catholics and, increasingly, members of other faiths as well. I have, by necessity, as well as conviction, developed an attitude of respect for the profundity of others' religious views. I frequently sum it up this way: The moment you meet a person of another religion whom you consider to be as good, as intelligent, and as religious as you are, you will never be the same. DENNIS PRAGER is a Jewish writer and lecturer who has coauthored The Nine Questions People Ask About Judaism, the most widely used introduction to Judaism in the world, and Why The Jews? The Reason for Antisemitism. He is currently writing Happiness Is a Serious Problem, to be published by Random House.

The highest forms of religion and holiness, and the most fervent forms of devotion of those who worship God without the Word and command of God, are idolatry.... every such form of religion, which worships God without His Word and command, is idolatry. The more spiritual and holy it appears to be, the more dangerous and destructive it is; for it deflects men from faith in Christ and causes them to rely on their own powers, works, and righteousness. CHAPTER1WO SATAN IS ALIVE AND ACTIVE Demons are satanic emissaries. If we are to consider meaning fully the activities of demons, and techniques for dealing with their influence, we must first consider the existence and charac ter of their chief-"the prince of the power of the air," "the ruler of this world." Michael Green proposes seven lines of evidence in support of belief in Satan. 1 The first is philosophical. It is absurd to imagine a universe of rational intellect without a supreme Reason, God. Similarly, it is most reasonable to suppose an organizing spirit of supreme evil behind all that is corrupt and malign. Second, theology teaches us to believe in a creator-God who, though unseen, is personal and good, and is concerned with redeeming 21 COUNSELING AND THE DEMONIC persons from the evil into which they have fallen.
